DVDTalk Draft Round 1 (RoboDad vs Suprmallet)

Hello voter! Please vote for the team of characters that you like better. It's all personal preference. If one character on the list ruins a team for you and you select the other team based on that alone, so be it (although it would be preferred that you look at the team as a whole )

We would love to hear feedback and why you chose one team over another. Feel free to comment, ask questions, criticize, etc.

RoboDad
1. Captain Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp, Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, 2003-present)
2. Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen, Toy Story franchise, 1995-2010)
3. Doctor Emmett Lathrop "Doc" Brown (Christopher Lloyd, Back to the Future trilogy, 1985-1990)
4. Westley/The Dread Pirate Roberts (Cary Elwes, The Princess Bride, 1987)
5. Officer Alexander James Murphy/RoboCop (Peter Weller and Robert John Burke, RoboCop franchise, 1987-1993)
6. Spock (Leonard Nimoy and Zachary Quinto, Star Trek franchise, 1979-present)
7. Gandalf (Sir Ian McKellen, The Lord of the Rings franchise, 2001-2003)
8. Frankenstein's Monster (various actors, Frankenstein franchise, 1931-present)
9. Phil Connors (Bill Murray, Groundhog Day, 1993)
10. Butch Cassidy (Paul Newman, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, 1969)

Suprmallet
1. Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski (Jeff Bridges, The Big Lebowski, 1998)
2. Bugs Bunny (various actors, Looney Tunes franchise, 1981-present)
3. Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner, Chris Pine, Star Trek franchise, 1979-2009)
4. "Dirty" Harry Callahan (Clint Eastwood, Dirty Harry franchise, 1971-1988)
5. T.E. Lawrence (Peter O'Toole, Lawrence of Arabia, 1962)
6. The Girl (Marilyn Monroe, The Seven Year Itch, 1955)
7. HAL 9000 (Douglas Rain, 2001: A Space Odyssey, 1968)
8. Jake Gittes (Jack Nicholson, Chinatown and The Two Jakes, 1974 & 1990)
9. Amélie Poulain (Audrey Tatou, Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain, 2001)
10. Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness and Ewan McGregor, Star Wars franchise, 1979-2005)

Re: DVDTalk Draft Round 1 (RoboDad vs Suprmallet)

RoboDad
1. Captain Jack Sparrow + (this performance was a great surprise)
2. Buzz Lightyear + (love the character, perfectly voiced)
3. Doctor Emmett Lathrop "Doc" Brown + (hilarious)
4. Westley/The Dread Pirate Roberts - (good character, but there are much better in that film)
5. Officer Alexander James Murphy/RoboCop - (like the first movie, it's not what I consider a great character though)
6. Spock + (this should have gone much much earlier!)
7. Gandalf + (what a wonderful portrayal!)
8. Frankenstein's Monster + (largely for Karloff in Bride)
9. Phil Connors - (fun movie, but not that interesting of a character)
10. Butch Cassidy + (you picked the right one, Newman's character in The Sting would have been even better)

Total Pluses: 7

Suprmallet
1. Jeffrey "The Dude" Lebowski + (this pick abides)
2. Bugs Bunny - (his FEATURE FILM appearances have been lackluster)
3. Captain James T. Kirk + (but of course!)
4. "Dirty" Harry Callahan + (what a great character!)
5. T.E. Lawrence - (great movie, the character was less interesting to me)
6. The Girl - (I don't remember anything interesting about the character other than the skirt blow-up -- a better Monroe character would have been from Some Like It Hot)
7. HAL 9000 + (very believable scenario, made creepy by the voice)
8. Jake Gittes + (despite The Two Jakes)
9. Amélie Poulain + (the character that every audience member falls in love with)
10. Obi-Wan Kenobi + (totally bland in the prequels, but his portrayal by Guiness trumps that)

Total Pluses: 7

Since it's a tie, I award the winner to Suprmallet for having a (slightly) better gender variety.

Re: DVDTalk Draft Round 1 (RoboDad vs Suprmallet)

Groucho, you should rewatch The Seven Year Itch, there's more to Monroe's character than just the skirt blowing up. Still, thanks for the vote!

Also, I thought Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan was the one consistently good thing about the prequels, and it helped that he actually got better in each one.

I'm indifferent towards the PotC movies but I think his character is overrated.

I voted for Suprmallet because he's a moderator, it's always a good idea to suck up to the moderators on occasion.

Great list Suprmallet!

I heavily considered Inigo Montoya. Never would have thought to put Westley.

Re: DVDTalk Draft Round 1 (RoboDad vs Suprmallet)

It was hard to pick against a team that had BOTH Spock and Gandalf, but the combo of Kirk, Dirty Harry, the Hal 9000, and the Dude did it.

I agree, if the one moderator who is participating in this contest wins, then something's fishy

Re: DVDTalk Draft Round 1 (RoboDad vs Suprmallet)

Speaking of fishy, was does it mean that everyone I voted for is winning (so far)?

Does it mean that I am very 'in tune' with the basic preferences of DVDTalk? Or that I'm a suck-up that only picks obvious winners?

I like your list, RoboDad. You got a bad draw, being matched up against "The Mod"

Re: DVDTalk Draft Round 1 (RoboDad vs Suprmallet)

Robodad for me.
About the only two who speak to me at all on the second list are Bugs Bunny and ol Kirk.
I must have missed something with all this Dude cult-ism, after watching that movie I wanted my two hours back. I don't really know why "the dude abides" is considered such a catchy catchphrase, or what the appeal of the character even is.
Pretty much everyone on list 1 is awesome, except i don't know if I've ever seen a BUtch Cassidy film [not huge into westerns].
