DVDTalk draft Round 1 (Fist of Doom vs MinLShaw)

Hello voter! Please vote for the team of characters that you like better. It's all personal preference. If one character on the list ruins a team for you and you select the other team based on that alone, so be it (although it would be preferred that you look at the team as a whole )

We would love to hear feedback and why you chose one team over another. Feel free to comment, ask questions, criticize, etc.

Fist of Doom
1. Darth Vader (David Prowse, Hayden Christensen and James Earl Jones, Star Wars franchise, 1977-2005)

9. Jackie Brown (Pam Grier, Jackie Brown, 1997)

Re: DVDTalk draft Round 1 (Fist of Doom vs MinLShaw)

Fist of Doom
1. Darth Vader + (classic character, great first round pic)
2. Bill the Butcher - (an okay character in a terrible film)
3. Jules Winnfield + (a bad-ass mother fucker!)
4. Lord Humungus - (generic, forgettable villain)
5. Aragorn - (fairly bland)
6. Beetlejuice + (great pic)
7. William Munny + (wonderful character, wonderful performance)
8. Steve Zissou - (not bad, but not a personal favorite)
9. Jackie Brown - (Meh)
10. Véronique - (Haven't seen this film)

Total Pluses: 4

MinLShaw
1. James Bond + (an obviously great first round pic)
2. Count Dracula + (the good portrayals outweigh the bad ones)
3. Cowardly Lion + (for the great 1939 version)
4. Captain Louis Renault + (this character should have been picked earlier!)
5. Lt. Colonel Nicholson + (love this character)
6. Curt Henderson - (Meh)
7. Shaun - (Love the movie, but Pegg pretty much plays a version of "Shaun" in everything)
8. Tom Doniphon + (my favorite John Ford film)
9. Nick Naylor + (a part perfectly suited to Eckhart)
10. Optimus Prime - (never been a fan of this franchise)

Total Pluses: 7

Winner: MinLShaw

MinLShaw for a well-rounded selection, plus his pick of Lt. Colonel Nicholson and Captain Louis Renault.

Re: DVDTalk draft Round 1 (Fist of Doom vs MinLShaw)

The easiest way for me to pick a winner will be to rate the individual characters. List with highest avg score will get my vote (N/A = haven't seen movie).

Here goes...

Fist of Doom
1. Darth Vader (David Prowse, Hayden Christensen and James Earl Jones, Star Wars franchise, 1977-2005) (10/10)
2. Bill the Butcher (Daniel Day-Lewis, Gangs of New York, 2002) (N/A)
3. Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson, Pulp Fiction, 1994) (7.5/10)
4. Lord Humungus (Kjell Nilsson, The Road Warrior, 1981) (8/10)
5. Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, 2001-2003) (7.5/10)
6. Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton, Beetlejuice, 1988) (7.5/10)
7. William Munny (Clint Eastwood, Unforgiven, 1992) (7.5/10)
8. Steve Zissou (Bill Murray, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, 2004) (N/A)
9. Jackie Brown (Pam Grier, Jackie Brown, 1997) (6.5/10)
10. Véronique (Irène Jacob, The Double Life of Véronique, 1991) (N/A)

MinLShaw
1. James Bond (various actors, James Bond franchise, 1962-present) (10/10)
2. Count Dracula (various actors, various films & franchises, 1923-present) (9/10)
3. Cowardly Lion (various actors, various Oz adaptations, 1908-present) (5/10)
4. Captain Louis Renault (Claude Rains, Casablanca, 1943) (7.5/10)
5. Lt. Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness, The Bridge on the River Kwai, 1957) (6/10)
6. Curt Henderson (Richard Dreyfuss, American Graffiti, 1972) (8/10)
7. Shaun (Simon Pegg, Shaun of the Dead, 2004) (7/10)
8. Tom Doniphon (John Wayne, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, 1962) (7/10)
9. Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart, Thank You for Smoking, 2006) - N/A
10. Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen, Transformers franchise, 1986-present) (7/10)

Avg scores (based on known characters)
Fist of Doom: 7.8/10
MinLShaw: 7.3/10

Excellent lists and a very close call, but slight edge to Fist of Doom

Fist of Doom gets my vote for the one-two punch of Vader and Beetlejuice.

Shaw gets it for the incredible range of great characters...from "old school" picks like Renault and Nicholson, to modern ones like Nick and Shaun.

Shaw got my vote. "Steve Zissou" is an immediate FAIL in my book. Horrible movie. Horrible character.

Re: DVDTalk draft Round 1 (Fist of Doom vs MinLShaw)

1. Darth Vader (David Prowse, Hayden Christensen and James Earl Jones, Star Wars franchise, 1977-2005) - F
2. James Bond (various actors, James Bond franchise, 1962-present) - M
3. Count Dracula (various actors, various films & franchises, 1923-present) - M
4. Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson, Pulp Fiction, 1994) - F
5. Lt. Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness, The Bridge on the River Kwai, 1957) - M
6. Captain Louis Renault (Claude Rains, Casablanca, 1943) - M
dropoff
7. William Munny (Clint Eastwood, Unforgiven, 1992) - F
8. Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton, Beetlejuice, 1988) - F
dropoff
9. Cowardly Lion (various actors, various Oz adaptations, 1908-present) - M
10. Tom Doniphon (John Wayne, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, 1962) - M
11. Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen, Transformers franchise, 1986-present) - M
12. Bill the Butcher (Daniel Day-Lewis, Gangs of New York, 2002) - F

MinLShaw followed a similar strategy to me, if he'd taken Ed over Shaun it would be a roster to fear. Humungus is the only person taken with less screen time than Blake from GGR, I think.

This was the toughest pick for me, I had to go with Fist of Doom, mainly because he didn't have Optimus Prime on his list.

Re: DVDTalk draft Round 1 (Fist of Doom vs MinLShaw)

Fist of Doom
1. Darth Vader (David Prowse, Hayden Christensen and James Earl Jones, Star Wars franchise, 1977-2005) Yes, a good character. Kind of a cliched choice, though
2. Bill the Butcher (Daniel Day-Lewis, Gangs of New York, 2002) Ok
3. Jules Winnfield (Samuel L. Jackson, Pulp Fiction, 1994) Cool
4. Lord Humungus (Kjell Nilsson, The Road Warrior, 1981) wgas, wgaf
5. Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, 2001-2003) Boring.
6. Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton, Beetlejuice, 1988) Fun.
7. William Munny (Clint Eastwood, Unforgiven, 1992) Came out way too long ago.
8. Steve Zissou (Bill Murray, The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou, 2004) This is what lost my vote. I'm still trying to figure out which is the worst film ever made, and this one is a contender.
9. Jackie Brown (Pam Grier, Jackie Brown, 1997) Good pick.
10. Véronique (Irène Jacob, The Double Life of Véronique, 1991) Ding, dong, router, whaaaa?

MinLShaw
1. James Bond (various actors, James Bond franchise, 1962-present) Oh boy.
2. Count Dracula (various actors, various films & franchises, 1923-present) I don't know. Great character in the novel, but hasn't been done right in any movie.
3. Cowardly Lion (various actors, various Oz adaptations, 1908-present) Nice
4. Captain Louis Renault (Claude Rains, Casablanca, 1943) Yeah, I guess.
5. Lt. Colonel Nicholson (Alec Guinness, The Bridge on the River Kwai, 1957) I don't know
6. Curt Henderson (Richard Dreyfuss, American Graffiti, 1972) I don't know. I think I would have gone with the radio as the best character in that film.
7. Shaun (Simon Pegg, Shaun of the Dead, 2004) Lame. Unfunny.
8. Tom Doniphon (John Wayne, The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance, 1962) I don't know. Did he actually play characters?
9. Nick Naylor (Aaron Eckhart, Thank You for Smoking, 2006) Probably a good choice, but I haven't seen it. So, you shouldn't have picked it.
10. Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen, Transformers franchise, 1986-present) For god's sake. You're lucky I saw the Steve Zissou pick of your opponent's first.

Going with myself, for obvious reasons here...but I will say I love the choices of Bill the Butcher and Beetlejuice, both of whom were on my original list. And, yes, lamphorn, the radio might have been the strongest character of American Graffiti. Forget anything to do with special effects created for Star Wars; George Lucas's greatest achievement as a director remains his brilliant use of the soundtrack in Graffiti.

An interesting position to take. I actually thought about that at one point. I concluded that characters that had been portrayed on multiple occasions gave a better chance for examination than those that would be tied to a singular acting performance, but I admit it was something that gave me some concern.
