Should Criterion release a book of their covers?

First of all, not entirely sure where this should go, but since it's more movie related than book I'll start here. Not sure about the rights to the images, but I think it would be an awesome coffee table book.

In theory, it would be fantastic. But how often would they need to do new ones to include newer titles? Every 100? What about if they revisit a previously-released title and give it a different cover? It would be chaos! Chaos, I tell you!!

Still, I'd buy it on release day.

If they did a book with their 100 best covers, with a little info on each film, that might be worth buying.

I would like to have a coffee table book of all there LD covers and then maybe release volumes with the first 500 DVD covers and then every 500 after that

They had a pretty cool catalog with all the laserdisc covers in mid 90's, I grabbed a stack of them & cut them up & made a neat collage of all titles that were available at the time.

Edit: It's still hanging on my wall today.

It could come with built-in legs, and shelfing underneath to allow you to store those 100 releases.

Plus they can add the aborted covers. There are a lot where they redesigned them, or changed them completely.

I'd love a massive poster with a collage of all their covers.

I'm not particularly a Criterion devotee, but that is still a pretty cool idea.

Sideshow toys release a book nearly every year. You just do vulumes.
But a book would be great. A main page of the finished cover paired with another page of rough designs and thoughts from the covers designer.

A book like that would be impossible to judge.

Re: Should Criterion release a book of their covers?

I'm guessing it would get an automatic "DVD Talk Collectors Series" rating on this site.

Re: Should Criterion release a book of their covers?

It's a $100 book. I'm assuming it will also be carried anywhere that books are sold, so I shall pick it up with my 50% off discount code. I know someone that works at a bookstore and they have a mad hook up.

Re: Should Criterion release a book of their covers?

Very smart idea actually. Would probably lead to more disc sales when someone sees a cool cover or artwork they like.
