The 13th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 22, 2019 - February 24, 2019)

The 13th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge

Official Rules

-ANY movie that has been NOMINATED or WON an Academy Award counts

-There is NO time limit, meaning it doesn't matter how long or short the item in question is, as long as it has been nominated or won an Academy Award

-You can watch a movie once then count it again if you watch the same film with a commentary

-There WILL BE a separate thread for LISTS ONLY created shortly before the challenge begins.

-You can count the actual Academy Awards Ceremony to be televised on Sunday February 24, 2019 as an entry if you'd like.

-There will be an "In Memoriam" Wild Card option. You can select up to 10 films to watch featuring a celebrity that died during 2018. But only ONE movie per celebrity. For example: You can watch "Jumpin' Jack Flash " to honor Penny Marshall but you cannot watch another Penny Marshall movie that did not win or was not nominated for an Oscar unless another celebrity that died during 2018 is in it. If that makes sense... The celebrity has to have died in 2018.

-The challenge begins at dawn local time Tuesday, January 22, 2019 at and will end at 11:59 pm on Sunday, February 24.

Re: The 13th Annual Academy Award Movie Challenge (January 22, 2019 - February 24, 20

It's that time again. The Golden Globes were last night so the Awards season is in full swing.

I would like to propose two new entries fro the checklist that could be kinda fun and might spark some chatter in the discussion thread. First, just for the sake of fun, would folks be open to adding a Razzie Award winner to the checklist? There are a few films that have been nominated for both an Oscar and a Razzie (Harlem Nights comes to mind) so I thought that could be a fun addition.

Second, can we add one film that the viewer thinks should have been nominated or won an Oscar? You'd have to explain your choice in the discussion thread. For example, As I was starting my list of films to watch this year (because yes, I'm that person), I came across Devil in a Blue Dress. To this day it boggles my mind that Don Cheadle didn't get a Best Supporting Actor nomination for that film. He killed it - literally and figuratively if you've seen the film. I bet the Academy would be happy to erase Kevin Spacey's win from that year. There are not a lot of actors that can steal a film from Denzel Washington.

Given how the decades run in Oscar-land, we're starting a new decade so 2018 is all by itself. I just hope Black Panther is nominated for something so I can listen to the commentary track. I've been saving it for this Challenge (again, I'm that person).

I will not number my lists and wonder why that’s important outside of October.

We've done prizes sometimes and numbered lists help keep track of viewing. If people feel strongly about that, I can remove it.

Yay! It's my favorite challenge of the year! Like you, Lisa, I plan to listen to more commentaries this year. I have all this physical media with all these special features that I hardly get around to fully utilizing. Can't wait.

I plan to renew Netflix for this Challenge. I always like to watch Virunga.

I didn’t mean to sound harsh in my comment obviously, just more curious as to why it seemed to be stressed so much in your wording. Obviously, most people number their lists and that’s cool. But it seems like something not really needed for anyone outside that individual. Personally, I’m just at to the point where I have no use for numbering. I apologize if my phrasing was confrontational, not intended.

Agreed, special features and commentaries pile up, but this always seems like a good Challenge to hit them in.

No harshness taken. I copy and paste from year to year so it's also possible that there was another reason for it being stressed in earlier years and I was just too lazy to change it.

Well you can number me among the folks that are excited for this challenge. It's actually my wife and youngest daughter's favorite.

I'm really hoping to get back into watching some older nominees this year, I've really been focusing on the current years' nominees the past few challenges. I stopped doing the AMC best picture showcase last year, and instead have been trying to catch all the movies I think might be nominated for best picture in their initial run so I should have more room in my schedule to work on this.

How can we watch a film winner from 2018 when the 2018 films are the ones being nominated on January 22nd?

I got a couple movies for Christmas that are eligible. Looking forward to breaking them out this Challenge.

Hmm, I see at least five options. One, you can watch 2018 nominees before the winners are announced and end up getting lucky that one or more of them won. Two, you can watch a winner after the ceremony in the dark hours before dawn. Three, you can watch a winner after it’s announced, particularly a short, and get it done before midnight, or during a commercial/credits. Four, for this one checklist item, nominee also counts and not just winner. Five, I’m not fully awake and missing something about that checklist.

I figure for the 2018 portion of the checklist, nominees would be permitted.

So far, no one has vetoed the addition of the Razzie or the Movie that should have been nominated to the checklist. Speak now or hold your peace until next year.

The list thread will go up later today.

I thought about popcorn's comment and it's probably best for 2018 to be added to the checklist next year. I'll add the Razzie and the "movie that should have been nominated" categories as bonuses.

Tomorrow is the big day. Any thoughts on who should/will get nominated?

I'm hoping Black Panther gets some love. It was my favorite film from last year. Regina King is great in pretty much everything so I have my fingers crossed that she gets a nomination. Despite my love for Mahershala Ali and how good his performance was, I need The Green Book to get shut out. Hollywood has got to stop making these historically inaccurate white savior films.

I'm hoping Avengers: Infinity War gets some love.

If anyone is padding their DVR for this challenge, it’s Denzel Washington night on TCM, Glory, Philadelphia, and A Soldier’s Story are airing tonight.

I hope Crazy Rich Asians gets some love. I picking it up from Best Buy today (9.99) and would l love to be able to watch it for the challenge.

I loved Crazy Rich Asians too and I would watch Michelle Yeoh read the phone book. I don't know why the Academy voters disrespect comedies but maybe they'll get a clue and nominate it for something.

I was browsing the Dish Guide, and found a first time view to kick off my challenge. Hook was on Encore Classic. I really enjoyed it and don't know why I never watched it before.
