Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

That trailer for The Hungry Snake Woman was...something.

I have always found that the trailers for movies like those are so much more fun than actually sitting down and watching the movies themselves. They show all the good stuff in the trailers and the movies themselves are usually dull. Not all but it seems the majoirty...at least in my experience.

Here is a Kickstarter post for you horror movie criticism book buffs out there. I have all three that have been produced so far and they are all fun. The Kickstarter for this one will be for their fourth book, Transgressive Horror Resurrected!

Yours truly even wrote the introduction for the essay on Somewhere In Time in the Fantastic Flops book (though they put it at the end of the essay for some reason). Various rewards are available!

Transgressive Horror Resurrected by Prof. Christopher McGlothlin — Kickstarter

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

CHECKLIST CONSTRUCTION

I'm still plugging in the new entries from suggestions, but I'll let you know what we need as I'm updating.

The usual - Every entry from actors to writers is/will be updated with the exception of the permanent rotating actors (Karloff, Lee, Legosi, Price & Cushing). Anything beyond that point that's in red has been updated or is a completely new section. A few of last year's entries are still there (e.g. horror film tropes) but will eventually be updated.

As always, current progress can be found in the wiki link, which directs to this post.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

On checklist, maybe this is due to rotate out anyway but, may we please change 'watch a film you've never seen before' that 'Was written by Wes Craven' to something like 'Was written by a Master of Horror' since many of us have probably seen Wes' films before (it might be nice to ensure possible 100% checklist completion if anyone is game for it)? Anything to open that item up a bit more could help.
Thanks to Chad for all the organization.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

And another reason to hate the IMDB. You may have noticed some of the directors, composers, producers, etc. entries have really high numbers. That's due to there being no current option for 'job type', which disappeared after the advanced search redesign. That's why Clive Barker has 50(!) entries when he only directed 3 [feature] films, and they even include "special thanks" titles that he didn't work on. If you go to the main page you can click 'director' under the credits section, but you can't link to it. They're apparently aware of the issue and have been working on it for at least 4 months. So I guess I'll just switch to Letterboxd links for those available because who knows when it'll be fixed.

Yeah, that’s been such a pain since the revision of the website. Happy to hear they’re at least aware that a fix is needed.

I noticed the first entry in the cast section, Daniel Carrasco, is also in the VFX section. I think that might be a mistake? He doesn’t have any cast credits that I can see.

Having my yearly fun of planning everything! 🥳 Thanks for all the work you do! This is definitely the thing I look forward to every year.

^Yeah, he's VFX only. Thanks.

And I forgot to say if anyone has checklist suggestions to give 'em. That goes for anything.

Vincent Schicchi has 10 credits for make-up, including the original Strangers and Bodies Bodies Bodies. Speaking of the Strangers, does Strangers: Chapter 1 qualify as part of a franchise? I think so but I thought I would check.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Some actor possibilities for the checklist (# of horror credits, prior use on checklist):
Frank Welker (27, never used)
Robin Sydney (26, never used)
Sally Kirkland (22, never used)
Tak Sakaguchi (13, never used)
Patty Shepard (12, never used)
Jennifer Rhodes (11, never used)
Silvia Solar (11, never used)
Julie Strain (43, used 1x in 2016)
Adrienne Barbeau (29, used 1x in 2014)
Katharine Isabelle (20, used 1x in 2013)
Traci Lords (16, used 1x in 2015)
Ingrid Pitt (15, used 1x in 2013)
Giancarlo Esposito (only 5 but 2 are on this year's subset list, never used)

A couple composers:
Steph Copeland
Penka Kouneva

And a producer:
Emily Gotto

(And yes, agreed, another effect of the IMDb revamp that I hate...)

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Wow. Looking through Robin Sydney's filmography I see Barbie & Kendra Crash Joe Bob’s Drive-In Jamboree! According to reviews it's the fourth in the series with only 10 or so minutes of actual footage shot. The bulk of it is other movies with dubbed audio, like FM did for Corona Zombies. Sounds awful and I wanna see it.

Definitely. It's just a reboot or reimagining of the franchise that's part of a planned trilogy.

Christian Slater and Val Kilmer are two options for actors that have letterboxd lists (with a few more choices on IMDB).

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

^I was literally about to put Steven Johnson on the list after seeing a YouTube clip of him and his then wife Linnea Quigley doing makeup bits for Horror Hall of Fame II.

And it doesn't look like Letterboxd is always a good IMDB replacement as some cast/crew have some missing entries. For some of the people I'll link the IMDB profile page for the person, and you can narrow it down to horror in the 'credits' section for their desired profession, but you have to manually do it after you click the link. A bit inconvenient but better than nothing.

I couldn't get either checklist link for Candy Cinema to work, here is a possible alternative one: https://letterboxd.com/colehomevideo.../genre/horror/
Also for 'Coming of Age' here are some alternative links: https://www.pastemagazine.com/movies...-horror-movies or https://creepycatalog.com/45-dark-co...horror-movies/

We haven't done a death by hanging or features a hanging. There are 336 horror movies with hanging as the keyword.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Here's the theatrical, VOD, streaming and physical media titles for the Theatrical / VOD / Virtual Cinema Showing subset/theme thread. As always, the sources used are both UpcomingHorrorMovies and the IMDB since the latter usually has a few the former doesn't. A couple releases from the IMDB don't list specifics as to how they're being released, which might indicate the release date is wrong. Let me know if I'm missing anything or have more information on the two mystery titles.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 20: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Just went down a brief but interesting rabbit hole for those two mystery films...

Both of them are from Angry Troll Studio. I went to their website to see if they had any info up about the releases, and got curious when the site didn't load. The top google result for the studio is this reddit post. Judging by that, I think chances are pretty slim that either movie will be released in any form this October...

(For extra lulz, check out their Yelp page, with a single 1-star review for failing to produce a sign they'd been commissioned to do. The profile pic touts their "all time high STARmeter" in the 7 millions. STARmeter is IMDb's popularity contest where, of course, the lower your number, the more popular you are.)

ExistenZ had it's premiere in Spain at the Sitges Film Festivel on October 6, 1999.
