I bring this up because as much as I love the Criterion Challenge, participation is easily the lowest of all the challenges. Always has been, and is damn near barely alive by now. Some of that has to do with the community itself disintegrating, but the Horror Challenge is alive and well....

I'd love to see the Criterion Challenge expand into a Criterion/Arthouse/Foreign Challenge. This would open up the theme to so many different options. And for Horror Challenge fans, they could get an early start in September by watching arthouse/foreign horror flicks.

We'll talk more in August but at this point, this is the plan. Criterion purists can still restrict themselves to Criterion and retain the challenge as they've always enjoyed it, so no one is losing anything by expanding.

Have you decided about hosting RMM again this year, David?

Thanks for the nudge! I had set a calendar reminder to create the discussion thread on January 9, then when it went off, decided that it was too early but neglected to change my reminder. Discussion thread is now live!

Don't know if someone is running the oscars challenge here this year, but tcm dropped their schedule.. https://assets.tcm.com/projects/31da...1-Schedule.pdf

Cool, thanks.

Oscar nominations will be announced on March 15 so I'll start the threads around March 5 unless someone else is itching to host the Oscar Challenge.

Just announcing the return of the Drive-in/Exploitation challenge. It will be overlapping the Oscar Challenge. Feel free to participate in one, the other, or both.

Is the May challenge going to happen this year? Just noticed next weekend is the 1st of the month.

I was hoping whoever took it over last year would do so again, but if no one else wants to do it, I will. I'll give it a couple of more days. I don't even have a challenge idea yet.

EDIT: It was BobO'Link. Maybe he wants to do it again.

I totally forgot - just haven't been in challenge mode much this year. I just posted the discussion thread and the list thread will go live in a few...

**EDIT**
And I messed up the title - it's called the "Eleventh" right now - I reported it and asked for it to be changed to the Twelfth. Sigh... hope this isn't a sign of things to come...

**EDIT 2**
List thread is live. At least it has the right name. :D

The dates for next year's Oscar Challenge are set: nominations are announced on February 8 with the ceremony occurring on March 27.

Subject to change though.

Just wanted to pop on here and confirm that I'll be hosting July and August's challenges again this year. I'll get July's Sci-fi/Fantasy challenge pages up in the next week or two since I'll be pretty busy the last week of June, so would like to get everything confirmed before then.

Will do! I should be fine getting things set up, just want to do it about a week earlier than I usually do so the last week of June, I can be a little more hands off until the challenge starts. :) Getting a chance to see my best friend for the first time in person in 2 years!

Have a great time LJG. I need the sci fi challenge more than usual this year. Thanks to the pandemic, even though Oshkosh is happening this year, I won’t be able to go.

I'm sorry to hear that, shadokitty, I know you really enjoy going to that every year. Hopefully next summer traveling to Oshkosh is doable for you again! I'll definitely get the challenge up and running soon so that you and everyone else can start planning.

*Start* planning!?!

I start planning the next year's SF/Fantasy viewing schedule the day the challenge ends. It's my favorite challenge *plus* the one that first drew me to these monthly marathons. :D

Enjoy your time with your friend!

LOL! Sorry, I misspoke! I should have said, "in case people need to start planning..." Forgive me...it's been a busy spring! lol! :)

I've gone ahead and started a discussion thread for the revamped September challenge. I'm hopeful we can do something with it this year to rejuvenate it.

Starting to wonder if there's even enough interest in revamping the September challenge to bother at all.

I've gone ahead and started the TV on DVD* challenge discussion thread. I'm hoping we might boost participation, so I want to brainstorm early. I've made a pitch of designating some specific shows for us to watch. If it flies, it might take awhile to sort out the logistics.

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

I know I am about 6 weeks early, maybe longer... but just wondering about the Oscar Challenge this year. The nomination Announcement is on 2/8 and the awards are on 3/27. The past few years has had a quick turnaround with Covid, but this year seems they're going back to the normal season. Are we going to do a 47 day challenge? I know this is early, but im jonesing.

lisadoris 12-21-21 09:56 AM

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

I just put the Oscar dates in my 2022 Calendar yesterday! It will make for a longer challenge and cause overlapping with the Romance/Musical Challenge and the Action/Adventure Challenge. I'm fine running it from nomination announcement to ceremony but I'll defer to the wisdom of fellow Challenge runners.

davidh777 12-21-21 10:20 AM

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

My vote would be to let the challenge run during its natural dates, nominations to ceremony. I know some members don’t like long or overlapping challenges, but they’re free to participate however they’d like.

If it helps, the music/romance challenge has been experimental the last couple years because of the Oscar weirdness. I’m glad to host again because the categories are in my wheelhouse, but also could pull back if there’s challenge overload.

Darkgod 12-21-21 12:52 PM

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

I think its easier with the two its overlapping. When it overlaps the b/drive in/exploitation... thats when its harder.

Travis McClain 12-21-21 09:24 PM

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

I'm also in favor of running from nomination to ceremony. Oscar nominees and winners are often long. It's hard to muster the enthusiasm to sit down with 3+ hour epics (or, these days, 3+ hour popcorn flicks masquerading as epics) back to back. Accessibility to current nominees can sometimes be an issue, especially for any participants who want to catch whatever they can in a theater. Besides, dual-challenge participants will appreciate being able to vacillate between the two active challenges. Others may disregard the other concurrent challenges altogether.

Trevor 12-24-21 09:09 AM

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

I like Academy Award being an overlapping ‘extra’ Challenge. Pretty much agree with all the above thoughts.

pacaway 01-13-22 11:03 AM

Re: "Official" DVDTalk Challenges Compendium

I prefer it as an overlap as well, always running from noms to awards regardless of dates. There will always be overlaps with the "regular scheduled" challenges.
