This was actually a surprisingly good Law & Order. Those have been few and far btwn the last several seasons.

That was a great caricature of Lennie/Jerry at the end. I want to get my hands on that. That and a framed copy of Elisabeth Rohm's walking papers (whenever that happens) would be nice to have. Definitely a sad goodbye.

Was this the first time we've seen Sutherland do anything in court other than glare at suspects?

Pretty much. Of course, Jack hands her the slam dunk case that any 1st year law student could have won. The abilities of Southerlyn and Rohm perfectly mirror each other.

Is this the first show this season not to be 1) ripped from the headlines and 2) Original case not spin off into a completely other case?

I don't know - maybe this was ripped from the headlines. It just wasn't hyped as such. I don't have a problem with their ripped from the headlines episodes - some of my favorites over the 14 years have been RFTH episodes - just don't overhype it.

As for point #2, I definitely prefer the simpler non-spin off crime episodes. That is probably one I enjoyed this one. Plus this one had a real valid legal issue - in criminal procedure, under murder for hire, does there have to be a pecuniary interest for an agreement to made? They actually cited the case law that says NO. This is when Law & Order is at its best - at least on the Order side.

Spoiler:
I really thought they would have a going away party at the local bar instead of the ending we were shown.

no "punching the clown" or "sniffing her panties and bopping the banana"?
I like his line about maybe working for the DA on occasion

Are you joking? Lenny was a recovering alcoholic. He was rarely in a bar, but when he was he was drinking club soda.

I loved how the FFL in VT sold the pistol to that lady.
He broke mulitple laws. He'll be losing his license and be looking at time in federal "pound him in the ass" prison
straw purchase (federal violation)
selling a handgun to a resident of another state (would have been ok if it had been a long gun) (another federal violation)
not sure if he could be charged for this too, but he had to know he was helping her violate NY State and NY City laws, so I guess conspiracy at the very least
I realize there are corrupt people in all professions, but I highly doubt an FFL holder would do this

...Except for that one episode after the execution that they witnessed. We all know the fun results of that one.

Lenny has been in bars several times for leisure. Hell the whole time he was in Baltimore for Homocide he was in the bar across from the station with Munch.
I was hoping they would go to a bar and have Munch, Noth and even Benji Brandt come back to say goodbye.

Yep - I don't think Lenny has a fear of bars - as said, he just sticks to the club soda. Besides, he is a pool hustler so he must still hang out in bars frequently.

More on the Det. Fontana character:
Spoiler:
Farina debuts in Law & Order

BILL BRIOUX, SUN MEDIA

"He's going to be the type of guy that you wouldn't want to play poker with." That's how Dennis Farina describes his new character, Det. Joe Fontana, on TV's longest-running drama, Law & Order.

A former Chicago cop, Farina, 60, wore a badge in the stylish '80s series Crime Story. He'll take over from Law & Order's top cop Jerry Orbach (Det. Lenny Briscoe) on tonight's 15th season premiere at 10 on NBC (Cable 11).

"He's a little bit of a mystery," added Farina. Like dapper Farina, Fontana will dress better than the average cop. He's a single, free-spending dude.

The actor was flattered when executive producer Dick Wolf asked him to join the series after Orbach announced he was punching out after 12 seasons.

"To me it was a no-brainer," he said. "I mean, it's the best writing in television."

Farina compared the Law & Order scripts to "biting into a real good steak or a good forkful of really good pasta. You know it immediately."

Orbach, 68, hasn't completely hung up his badge. He'll play a semi-retired squad agent in Law & Order: Trial By Jury, a mid-season drama starting in January. "As Jerry will tell you," Wolf told critics last July, "he has moved beyond the mandatory retirement age of any police force on the planet."

I'm interested in seeing how Farina will work out, but I'm sad that Lenny is gone.

Joe Fontana eh? Is someone on the writing staff a 49ers fan? The fact he dresses nicer than the average cop isn't a new character trait either. Sergeant Phil Cerreta was a very snappy dresser.

I'll check it out. Even though my favorite duo was Cerreta and Logan, it's going to be really odd watching L&O without Orbach.

Well, I have to defend Rohm at least a bit. If she's known as the Ice Queen, what the hell is Diane Neal on L&O:SVU? Rohm looks like a finely honed actress compared to Neal.

Did the first episode of this run a minute or two over? The last couple of scenes were cut off on my PVR.

Those were 2 very well-done episodes. When they do 'ripped from the headlines' in an ancillary way, they usually turn out okay and this was no exception. What was really good was the substantive and procedural legal maneuverings - love that. I never thought about how it might be to a potential terrorist's advantage to be held as an enemy combatant rather be tried in a criminal court.

I think Farina fit right in, which is little surprise to me. The chemisty btwn him and Jesse Martin was apparent right away. I like the character of Fontana, and the mystery behind his bankroll.

Best of all, was Arthur and Jack getting pissed off at Serena; Arthur in the 1st ep and Jack in the 2nd. You can see that they are already setting the stage for her departure.

Overall, these were probably the best 2 original L&O episodes I have seen in over 3 years. An excellent way to start the 15th season.

I liked that too.

"You can stay in your office or stand in the back next to Jack"

"If you can't handle the verdict then stay in your office" (something like that)

She was looking pretty pissed. How long is she on for this season?
