Re: UHD release announcements
^ neat! Google Translate:
As I recall, 48p isn't an option on the 4K disc spec, but 60p is. So will the Hobbit flicks be 24p (most likely) or 'upped' to 60p (unlikely because it doesn't convert simply).
As it stands, Warner plans to release all the films of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Trilogies on 4K UHD Blu-ray. The release date is planned for summer 2020!
Warner Home Video uses one of the most valuable brands in its back catalog and donates a 4K remaster to the blockbuster trilogies of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit . According to preliminary information, Warner plans to release in the summer of next year, more specifically on June 25, 2020 . In addition, each of the Extended Cuts on 4K Blu-ray land!
4K upgrade for the Lord of the Rings universe
Fans of the HDR universe have long been waiting for Warner to give the films an audiovisual upgrade. And as we know, the movie studio is always up for a high quality 4K remaster. Proofs include the " Christopher Nolan Collection ", " Blade Runner Final Cut " or the recently released " Shining ".
Bilbo Baggins 4K Blu-ray
We can not wait to see the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Frodo and Co. on 4K Blu-ray in our hands
Warner has always been very "generous" in terms of features with his 4K Blu-ray releases. Current blockbusters are usually delivered with Dolby Atmos sound in German and English as well as Multi-HDR (HDR10 & Dolby Vision) . Almost nothing else we expect from the 4K Blu-rays of The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit Movies.
Analog, digital and HFR?
Very interesting is also the visual comparison between the 4K remasters. While were filmed "The Lord of the Rings" films (theatrical release 2001-2003) completely analog , sat director Peter Jackson in the Hobbit trilogy (2012-2014 theatrical release) is already completely to digital. The scenes that were later completed by CGI have been captured using the Red Epic in Redcode Raw format. The footage reached the production partly even in 5K resolution. It will show which source material delivers the better UHD image with extended dynamic range at the end. In addition, we must not forget that the 3D presentation of the hobbit films with HFR (High Frame Rate)ran in the cinema. Means that twice as many frames per second, 48 instead of 24, are available. For the 4K 2D Blu-ray Warner will certainly decide for the 24p version - or not?
Planned 4K Blu-rays from Warner:
The Lord of the Rings: The Companions (2001)
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012)
The Hobbit: Smaug's Wasteland (2013)
The Hobbit: The Battle of Five Armies (2014)
Of course, once we get final details about the "Lord of the Rings" and "The Hobbit" 4K Blu-rays, we will communicate them through this website. As usual, you will find the discs in our complete list of all 4K UHD Blu-rays .

Re: UHD release announcements
That is one series I'm willing to upgrade. We just watched all six extended editions with our kids for the first time a few months ago. Hopefully they have one big box set with all of them.

Re: UHD release announcements
Will most likely be the Theatrical Cuts of the Hobbit and LOTR films first quarter and then the Extended Editions in time for the holiday season 2020. No way they bundle the theatrical and extended cuts together in the same packaging.
Also, I wonder if Jackson will make Fellowship even greener?

Re: UHD release announcements
More movies than not on Ultra HD Blu-ray have 2K effects. Even movies with 4K DIs often have visual effects shots rendered at a lower res.

Even with a 2K master, there's still the ability to do an HDR color grade, add a better audio mix (Atmos), and the better compression and disc capacity on UHD Blu-ray means they may be able to finally fit the Extended Edition of each movie on a single disc.
LOTR also was shot on film, so there is a possibility they could go back and rescan all the film elements to 4K, so the UHD would be a mix of 4K live action and upconverted 2K SFX. A number of standard Blu-rays were like this, like the Firefly TV show.
Redoing the SFX itself isn't entirely out of the question either. Star Trek: TMP had its "Directors Cut" originally rendered the new SFX in SD for the DVD release, but they're now going back an re-rendering for a new Blu-ray release. A few TV shows have had HD remasters that re-did the SFX, like X-Files and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, although sometimes to mixed results.

Re: UHD release announcements
Thanks for the info.
I can recall the first time I saw a UHD release with 4K SFX: The Great Wall (with Matt Damon).
The dragons in the film often seemed startlingly real, and nearly 3 dimensional.
True eye candy...

I just hope they don't DNR and artificially sharpen it like the BD's.

Re: UHD release announcements
Overall, I thought video was good enough for a catalog title.
It isn't so bad I would rush out and replace with 4Ks.
I saw BTTF soooo many times in the 80s, I still haven't an overwhelming desire to sit thru it sometime soon.
They won't...those 2 things are associated with BDs, not 4K UHD disks.
BTW, 4K should IMPROVE the grain structure seen on the BDs.

They shot a whole month with him, so however much of the movie that was - it was certainly a lot. It should be noted that Fox was always the first choice for the part.
