Re: UHD release announcements

I saw that Flash Gordon is coming out in a couple of weeks. I’d like to order one with 4K/Blu/Digital from Target. Does this exist? The descriptions aren’t exactly clear.

It doesn't. The standard version is just one disc -- UHD BD only. No BD, no digital copy. The collector's edition does include a Blu-ray disc, but it's of Life After Flash with some additional extras, not Flash Gordon itself.

Boutique labels like Arrow Video don't really do digital copies (I'm not sure how often their licensing agreements with studios would allow for that). It's also hit-or-miss whether boutiques will include the Blu-ray version of a movie or not. Some always do, others never do, and at least one has gone back and forth.

Re: UHD release announcements

According to Director René Manzor, Vinegar Syndrome will be releasing Deadly Games aka Dial Code Santa Claus in 4K.

3615 SANTA CODE CONTINUES TO SEDUATE USA!!

After its release of Dec 2018 cinema in the 40 cinemas of Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, its 2019 streaming lineup on Shudder (the US Netflix of the genre) it's Vinegar Syndrome's turn to release the movie on the US market in Blu-ray 4K.

Nice revenge for this little independent French film plagiarized by ′′ Home Alone ′′ (′′Mom I missed the plane′′).

Re: UHD release announcements

Kino Lorber mentioned on blu-ray.com that they have two Ultra HD Blu-ray titles on the way that have been licensed from MGM. Both have been previously released on Blu-ray.

I wonder if this could be tied to the titles that are going out of print from Scream Factory, like Escape from New York and Mad Max.

Another update! Kino Lorber is targeting November for their as-yet-unrevealed Universal-licensed title.

They were originally planning on putting that out on UHD BD last summer but scuttled it. To the point that they revised their deal with MGM. They haven’t said exactly why they dropped Valkyrie — I have my guesses! — but I’d be surprised if they picked it up again after all that.

Bryan Singer is so toxic right now that I can't imagine anybody wants to touch any of his movies outside the X-Men franchise (which is too valuable an IP to be taken down by one person). Valkyrie wasn't even a successful movie at the box office. Nobody was clamoring for it. With Singer's scandals intensifying again, there's zero incentive to re-release that title now.

You will not be surprised to hear that's what I'm assuming is the issue, although the timeline is a little strange. At the very least, they didn't immediately drop the idea when things really blew up about Singer last January. They were still talking about Valkyrie (well, they hadn't publicly announced the title yet) as a tentative 'go' that February, seemed iffier about it in March, and announced in April that it was indeed Valkyrie and that they weren't going forward with it. I'm curious why it took that long to make the decision.

It's a drag that there'll be a year and a half between KLSC's UHD releases, but I can't help but think that even under the best of circumstances that Valkyrie would've done more harm than good.

Re: UHD release announcements

Hannibal also didn't do well for Kino, and it's not like Valkyrie is any more notable a title than Hannibal. So I'm not sure this is all about Singer. Kino haven't really shown themselves to be a company who runs from controversial creators.

That settles it then! Both MGM titles will be The Usual Suspects & Valkyrie. and I would gladly buy both in 4K UHD.

I was under the impression that it had under-performed and that was part of the reason they cancelled The Man With No Name set. Either way I'm not going to wade through that cesspool in order to find the relevant comments. I HOPE it did ok and they see fit to release more 4k, although middle of the road stuff like Hannibal or Valkyrie don't interest me in the slightest.

There's been a lot of Telephone Game where people would misquote Kino Lorber Insider's quotes from blu-ray.com, other people would misquote the misquoting, others still would misquote the misquoted misquoting , and the whole thing got really misconstrued.

Hannibal came out in April '19, and they didn't scrap the Dollars trilogy until that November.

We know this news is very disappointing to the fans of the films and format, as it is to us, but after some extensive tests and potential costs of creating newly color-graded HDR Dolby Vision masters, we decided to confirm this cancelation.

We will continue to support the format and plan to release three yet-to-be-announced titles on 4KUHD in 2020 and are working on some more projects.
They already had 4K masters for the Dollars trilogy, but they were in SDR only. And that's what MGM has on digital platforms now too. If MGM had already done HDR grades, we probably would've had this trilogy on the shelf for a year now.

They have at least three UHD releases in the works: two licensed from MGM and a third from Universal. All three have previously been released on Blu-ray. The Universal title is "newer" (which could just mean circa-2000 and on, since they said something similar about Hannibal beforehand) and eyed for a November release. There would've been movement earlier, but the pandemic has gotten in the way of getting approvals from a director/cinematographer for the Universal title and closing the MGM deal.

I have a sneaking suspicion that one of them might be Escape from New York. Scream Factory's rights are expiring, there hasn't been a domestic Blu-ray release based on the 4K master, and it has an HDR grade ready to go.

They may have already put some work into it and were hesitant to scrap the project and lose that investment until they determined that releasing it would gain them nothing.

I hadn't considered that, and that certainly makes a whole lotta sense.

Re: UHD release announcements

Even putting aside all the stuff about Singer and what he’s done I’m kind of surprised that Valkyrie would be a title that would get focus at all. I mean it’s a twelve year old film that wasn’t particularly memorable or well reviewed.

I guess Hannibal was a bit of an odd choice too, but at least there it’s part of a franchise and a popular character played by a big name actor.

The real question if they release Escape on 4k, is will it come out before the copy I ordered from jb hi-fi back in May gets delivered? Or maybe I'm the only one who cares about that.

It's a Tom Cruise movie. Easy to plaster his face on a slipcover when selling copies in store at Best Buy. Hannibal's UHD got the same treatment. Given the media landscape, KL is probably looking for easily marketable titles that have some kind of hook like Cruise's starpower.

Sony has another poll to vote for titles — both for a second Columbia Classics collection as well as standalone releases.

I can only pick one from that first list? One?! I want at least 10. Had to vote for A Matter of Life and Death. Powell and Pressburger in 4k should be everyone's priority.

It was mine for sure.

For the second batch, I chose Munchausen, Real Genius, and It Happened One Night.
