Re: UHD release announcements

It looks like Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit trilogies will be hitting 4K UHD later this year

The artwork above looks like the German artwork.

Extended, theatrical, or both?

For those German covers, it looks like it's just the theatrical versions in UHD. The German Blu-rays stated "Extended Edition" on the Extended Edition covers, which these covers don't have. It'd make sense they'd release the theatrical versions first, then the extended a while later.

Re: UHD release announcements

If that is the case, I will be waiting then. The extended versions is the only way to watch the first trilogy. I didn't care that much for The Hobbit trilogy so the extended versions of it didn't mean as much.

Bill Hunt debunked the above tweet I posted. He said the 4K masters are being worked on, but it's premature to say it's coming out right now.

Re: UHD release announcements

I can see it now, 4K masters of the films and the same SD special features for the first three movies that were on the Blu-ray releases.

Anyway, the big question is if we'll get 4K versions for the original movies, the extended editions, or both.

I watched this the other day. It's equal parts amazing and horrifying. Gemini Man delivers that "looking out a window" quality more than anything else I've ever experienced in my home theater, yet it also looks like a home movie. Even the color timing makes it look more like a basic cable travelogue than a cinematic blockbuster. And the inexorably video-like frame rate exaggerates how artificial the dialogue and performances are as well. I don't regret getting it, especially since the streaming/download versions appear to be limited to 24fps, but now I know for sure that HFR is not for me. The movie's pretty dire in its own right, but I kinda knew that going in.

A heads-up: I was seeing some sporadic glitches in the colors. Even if I paused on a moment where the colors looked great, the still image would glitch after a few seconds. I tried a whole bunch of testing (HDMI ports, changing HDMI cables, bypassing my AVR, etc.), and it turns out the HDMI cables I tried were choking on the bandwidth. 4K/60fps/HDR10/Atmos worked flawlessly. 4K/60fps/Dolby Vision/Atmos had the glitchy colors. I bought a cable that spelled out that it could handle 18Gbps, and I'm not having any issues now. So if you're running into glitchy colors too, that's probably your fix.

Re: UHD release announcements

That sounds like Gemini Man's Dolby Vision has FEL metadata, which significantly requires more bandwidth.

Re: UHD release announcements

Yeah. Early speculation was that it’d be MEL to keep things from choking at that framerate, but as it turns out...!

StudioCanal's UHD release of The Elephant Man is up for pre-order on
amazon.co.uk amazon.co.uk
.

Also, if this French site is accurate, we're looking sometime around June for a 45th anniversary edition of Jaws.

discshop.se also lists a June 1st date for Jaws, with Inglorious Basterds and Spartacus following a week later (!).

A Jaws 4K would be a day-one purchase for me.

I wish Mel Brooks would have contributed to that set. A lot of people forget he produced that film.

Will the 4K disc lack chapters like the prior releases did?

It should be fine. Lynch has seemed to have caved on his "no chapter stops" policy. He's still big on his "little, if any, use of surrounds," so the audio will probably be very much front-loaded.
