How you watch your film is up to you. I'm not asking questions .If you cannot watch your assigned film for financial reasons (some are rental only) or just really don't want to spend $3 for a shot at winning some Blu-rays, let me know and I'll assign you another film (likely not from the previously-posted list). I cannot legally obligate you to spend money on this and I also ethically won't do it.

P.S. Streaming Platforms are as of August 30th. I don't know what will change in Spetember, but you can always take a look at https://www.justwatch.com/

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Vinegar Syndrome has an official Letterboxd profile now. They have a list of their filmography. Filtering for Horror shows 211 titles presently. Letterboxd genres come from TMDB, not IMDb, though, which makes them a bit wonky. There may be other movies that any reasonable viewer would tag as Horror that aren't. I appreciate TMDB, but their genre system is frustrating.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

OK, for the giveaways:
How would people feel about being randomly assigned a film to watch?

I will publish the shortlist beforehand, and anyone who wants to win tells me and I'll use a Random Name Selector to assign you a film. Could be a classic, could be a dud (I'm thinking about making every 6th film on the list something garbage).

Would an extra film be a little too much?

I'd also suggest, as you mentioned in the PM, to at least offer the chance to watch in late September since some are pretty meticulous about planning their watchlists out in advance. I mean the chances of the 6th film being Killer Tongue are fairly high, and, well, we don't wanna throw a wrench into the works.

It appears I do less and less with my life with each passing day, so an additional film is no problem with me.

I thought the 6th film was suppose to be a garbage film?

I’m still waiting on a 4K release from Vinegar Syndrome on this one.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

A few more subset updates...

  • The final deadline for subset volunteering is weekend's end. I obviously don't wanna exclude anyone that doesn't frequent the forum year round, but can't let it drag on for too long, and adding something late into the game often prolongs it further.

  • There's still 4 of you that have yet to give your picks. I'll be spending some of the weekend working on this, so if you wanna wait till around Monday or so, I'll list what themes still need covering. Or post 'em before then. Either's fine.

  • I'm guessing this has already been mentioned, but I *think* there'll be a couple of volunteers I'll have to ask for more picks. I'll let you know soon.

  • Since the The Frightfest Guide is comprised of 3 books, it has now morphed into 3 subsets. Couldn't help it, too many good picks to resist.

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

Alright, the subset volunteering window is now officially closed. We're at 23 volunteers this year.

Still need subset picks from Darth Maher, Trevor, T-bone22 and Shack.

I need additional picks from ororama and shellebelle.

PMs have been sent out as well.

Unclaimed Themes
  • Mashup
  • Video
  • Holiday
  • Synth
  • J&B
  • Cosmic
  • Slasher
  • Vampire
  • *Chrono
  • Writer
  • Halloween (alternate pick)

It's a good idea to claim at least two themes considering some volunteers are going to have more than one subset day.

__________________________________________________________

Theme Nights List

Subset Building Page

*For the chronological pick I'm going with an earlier suggestion and not limiting it to just one person's suggestions. In other words, it could be anywhere from 1-4 people with picks.

A couple of those themes are most likely already claimed, but just playing it safe.
Also, it was suggested earlier for the Halloween theme to pick a Halloween sequel to go alongside Halloween Ends, and Scream Factory just happens to be releasing this Halloween 6 - 8 UHD set on 10/18 (we've covered 1-4, 11 and 12).

Of course, it's your pick, your choice. But if you pick Resurrection, prepare to be judged harshly.
Spoiler:

Re: Pre-Horror Challenge 18: Building of the Optional Lists (Themes, Subset, & Checklist)

I'll announce full rules/time frame later (I'm thinking pretty much the month of September, with shipping in early October), but here's the list we're looking at at the moment. Please let me know if anything is a dupe of this year's Challenge. If I end up assigning you a film that you find super objectionable (perhaps you personally dealt with the undoing of reality in New England or you just really can't stand gore) or just have zero way to watch it, I will assign you a new film.
Spoiler:
Carpenter Bracket:
Halloween 1978
The Thing 1982 (40th Anniversary)
The Fog 1980
Prince of Darkness (35th Anniversary)
In the Mouth of Madness
Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (choose your version) (also, if you guys pick this for the Halloween sequel for the main list, I will replace it)

"Classic Concept" Bracket:
Halloween III (40th Anniversary)
The Exorcist
Dracula 1992 (30th Anniversary)
Dracula 1958
Poltergeist (40th Anniversary)
Witchboard

Mostly, but not Entirely Zombies Bracket:
28 Days Later (20th Anniversary)
Dawn of the Dead 2004
Dawn of the Dead 1978
The Cell
Out There Halloween Mega Tape (New to 2022)
Species 2

Foreign Bracket:
The Sadness (Taiwan)
Double Vision (Taiwan, 20th Anniversary)
House 1978 (Japan)
The Night Eats the World (France)
Train to Busan (South Korea)
Troll 2 (Trolls are from Norway, right?)

I believe we've used Event Horizon, The Decent and Mimic before.

Edit to add: it looks we've used Mimic 3 but not Mimic. We've used the other two I mentioned.

Why not. I’ll throw my hat in the ring for a random watch. I have a high tolerance for bad films anyway.
