Ruh roh! Anyone here experiencing this?

It seems poor Sony just cannot catch a break. The critically acclaimed PS3 Firmware 3.61 may be the cause of Sony consoles overheating when trying to play L.A. Noire. That is, if Rockstar's customer support warning is true.

"We have received some reports of PS3s overheating while playing L.A. Noire or beeping three times before shutting down/turning themselves off, mostly on older 60GB and 80GB fat models," said the company. "Primary reports seem to be that updating to firmware 3.61 will cause PlayStations to overheat. There have been various reports of this on a few different games now, all reporting their PS3s turning off or "Red Lighting" after having installed 3.61."

Rockstar says that Sony has been notified of the issue, and that it is continuing to test L.A. Noire on different PS3 SKUs and different Firmware versions to see what's up.

The support page we were linked to regarding this issue has since been deleted, and we have contacted Rockstar directly to see if they can comment further. We'll provide an update if and when one arrives.

Not yet, but it does explain why the fan kicks in on my 80gig system more than usual.

My initial hunch is that those systems' time is up and the firmware update is getting blamed because it's the last big change they made.

I guess when it rains it pours. My slim is running fine so far

Well, as I whined about it a few pages ago, my 80gig-fatty bit the dust just days before the update, so I'd say Drexl's right.

I have an 80 gig fatty as well. I'm gonna be super pissed if it dies on me since i stated playing demons souls. I should probably start reading up on how to back up my save.

It's easy to do if your PS3's still alive - just plug in a thumb-drive and keep your save files there.

I've had my PS3 slim, which we bought in December, freeze during BFBC2 three times since the network came back up. Yikes...

Has anyone here backed up a PS3 with one of the larger drives yet? Care to share how long it took? I installed a 500GB drive in my launch 60GB around 6 months ago and decided to make a new backup as a just in case. I believe I have around 160GB of space used and I saw a backup time of 4.5 hours. I'm just wondering if it will finish in that time frame or if it could take longer.

BC2 freezes on me periodically...don't think it's anything to worry about.

Kind of weird for numerous ones to start kicking it at the exact same time. My buddy had the issue, he's literally used his PS3 for maybe 100 hours since getting it (fat 60gb).

I got LA Noire on Tuesday but haven't 1) updated the firmware or 2) had time to play it, so I'll see how it works on my PS3 (also 60gb fat).

Been saying for at least a year that if you have a fat, you need to get rid of it and get a cooler running unit.

Naw that's bullocks, you shouldn't have to change your console out after only 4 years, unless they're going to send me a coffin and do it for free.

I'm not 100% sure but I think Demons Souls is a locked save. That means that the only way you can back it up is with PS Plus by using the cloud saving system. So like Reba said you better hop to it.

I googled and you're right. Fuck! Although I don't play the system too often so it may last longer than the other systems. Is there any other method to backup a locked save through some kind of hack?

The only other way I can think of is getting a new PS3 and transferring all the contents of the old hard-drive to the new one.

Don't forget you'll get a free month of Playstation Plus when the store comes back up. You can save your saves to the cloud there and then transfer them to the new system during that month.

BTW : My 60 GB Ford Pinto survived the system update and LA Noire just fine (though I've only played like an hour of Noire so far). My brand new 360 4GB Slim? Shipping that back to Texas today for a warranty repair.

I think I'd rather just use playstation plus till I finish ds instead of getting a brand new ps3. The one I have is still quiet so I think it's not on the verge of dying.

My PS3 (120GB slim) froze during a load screen on MLB 11 yesterday. Can't be a coincidence. I bought L.A. Noire but haven't played it yet. Now I feel I like I can't.

From http://www.gamasutra.com/view/news/3...urn_May_24.php :

Barring any additional problems, Sony plans to bring the PlayStation Store back online next Tuesday, May 24, according to a memo sent to Sony's game developer and publishing partners.
It'll take a little while for new content to trickle in, though:

5/24 - Content planned for 4/26
5/27 - Content planned for 5/3
5/31 & 6/3 - Content planned for 5/10, 5/17 & 5/24

Analogy of the Day
"Barring any additional problems," is to Sony as "Barring any rain," is to Seattle.

I wonder if this will push back the release of the Black Ops Map Pack.

Turns out I should have cancelled my card (even though the card I thought was in PSN turned out to be incorrect). My card (non-PSN) got charged $192 yesterday from Spain for something bogus, they tried again today and it triggered a block. Found out when my wife got denied at Whole Foods.

Well, there's this too:

While Sony is trying to maintain the queue that was already in place, the company says it is willing to move some titles around, depending on urgency. Seemingly, this would include DLC packs for existing titles that have already released expansions on other platforms.

"If there are concerns, we are willing to consider adjusting the release date of your content on this schedule," says Osorno. "Adjustments will be made on a case by case basis."
...so maybe Black Ops will be allowed to skip to the front of the line.

I'm pretty sure the DLC that is likely to sell 1mil in a day will get priority. :)
