Ugh, I have almost 40 gigs of games, add-ons and patches to download onto my new PS3 from PSN once it comes back. I dread how long it will take.

40 GB from PSN? I'm not sure the service has ever been consistently up long enough to download that much at once. ;)

Just do it on demand. When you decide you want to play a game, download it then (yes, I know it will take some time after that moment). I would bet that you aren't going to actually use all that stuff within the first week.
My first PS3 went out and was replaced in 2009, and there is still stuff I haven't bothered to download again. |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Sony and Rockstar put out a joint saying it's neither of us, but it's something: http://www.destructoid.com/rockstar-...t-201528.phtml
Rockstar and Sony have issues a joint statement regarding the issue of L.A. Noire and overheating PS3 systems. Yesteday, Rockstar blamed PS3 Firmware 3.61. Today, Sony blamed L.A. Noire. Now? both companies have said it's neither Firmware 3.61 OR L.A. Noire. "We have received a very small number of customer support questions about PS3’s overheating or shutting down while playing L.A. Noire," said the companies. "At this time, Rockstar Games and Sony can confirm that neither L.A. Noire or firmware update 3.61 are causing the PS3 hardware to overheat. We are both committed to working hard to find solutions to this and any issues that may arise." Links have been provided for both Rockstar support and Sony support. Nothing further was said over Sony's claim that "other systems" had also overheated (which was basically a statement that Xbox 360s were suffering problems too). New games often bring with them coincidental stories of overheating consoles, but this one certainly seems to be a little more serious than that. Hopefully none of you guys have had to deal with it! |

Looks like I'll be waiting a few more days before firing up LA Noire again...

Bullshit! At least it would be if I said that, as it routinely takes about 2 hours to download a 1-gig game. My DSL is kinda slow, but still, my Xbox and PC stuff download WAY faster than anything off of PSN.
BTW, you can sync trophies now if you want. It doesn't require the store. |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
I'm one of the few (or maybe many, I'm not sure) that doesn't give a flying fuck about trophies or achievements. A waste of time.

I can't transfer since my old PS3 is dead - I have to re-download everything from PSN once it's back up - that's what I'm not looking forward to.

In all seriousness, if you didn't change your password by now, you sort of deserve to have a few Yen swiped from your account. This intrusion, while criminally stupid (seriously, steal $1225 in points when the FBI and Homeland Security are monitoring everything?), is not the proverbial "other shoe dropping".

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
Just a heads up, as part of the whole welcome back thing, it's a double XP weekend for Killzone 3. I just racked up 20,000+ points in one round of Warzone which is insane but awesome.

Also if you own Mortal Kombat you can now play for free without the pass (if you bought used) Until the store is back up so you can redeem your online pass.
In light of the PlayStation Store’s downtime, Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment and NetherRealm Studios have lifted the need for Mortal Kombat‘s online Kombat Pass until Sony brings the Store back online. Upon its return, a Kombat Pass will again be required and will be available for purchase from the store at a price of $9.99, or if you purchased the game new you may simply enter the unique code that came packaged with your copy of the game. Players purchasing Mortal Kombat while the PSN was down for maintenance were of course unable to play the new blood-riddled brawler online. However when the network relaunched on May 14th their thirst for fatalities would not be quenched as the game requires an online ‘Kombat Pass’ in order to play online. Since redeeming this pass requires access to the PlayStation Store - which is still down – players would have to settle for a 48 hour trial at best if they had not activated the pass prior to the network shutting down. |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
So, Target has the 160GB PS3 for $299.99, plus a free $60 gift card.
I have two separate Target coupons that have printed out at the register for a free $100 gift card for buying this same bundle. I'm thinking about buying a PS3, and then getting essentially $160 in free gift cards. And then using those gift cards and buying another PS3, and getting another $160 in gift cards, using my coupon and the store promotion. Then I return the original PS3, along with the two gift cards I got from the second PS3, and I essentially get a PS3 for $140 + tax. Does my math sound right? I know this sounds like I'm sort of screwing Target, but the free $160 in gift cards still goes back into the store, just not as an additional purchase. |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
I have the same coupon and was thinking of getting another ps3. Because the $60 and $100 are scanned, I don't know if they'll need the same gift cards back when you return the ps3. Maybe someone knows the answer.
Let us know how it goes. I'd be curious to hear. I was waiting for a potential ps3 price drop at e3 since the coupon doesn't expire til June 18th, but this seems like a good enough deal. |
Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!
I'm still not sure if I'm going to do it. Reading some reactions to my idea, I think they might need the same gift card back? I don't know for sure. I might just buy it, get the two gift cards, and let that be that. Hmmm.

I really want to trade in my 80gb Fat console (non backwards compatibility) I originally bought it at Costco and have a feeling if it gets the YLOD, they won't take it back after all this time. Anyone know where is best for console trade ins?
