So Japan was right to be cautious.

 what a disaster, I think this now beats out Red Ring of Death for biggest flub in current gen consoles.

Sony needs to die in a fire.

I'd say it's a tie. Sony needs to do a little more to take the crown. C'mon Sony I know you can do it!

Hey, combine this with the PSP Go and I think you have an overall winner. Just imagine if HD DVD had beaten out Blu-Ray...

Oh, I don't know, maybe *this* plus the YLOD not being repaired by Sony gratis like the RROD is/was by Microsoft push it over the top in their favor (probably the wrong word here.)

I personally enjoyed the pre-launch theatrics more. "You'll want to work 2 jobs to afford one!" Probably because the theatrics really didn't affect anyone's gaming.

The RROD fiasco, while negligent in its own right, never harmed the customer. There's not even fair to compare the cases.

so wait, if I already changed my password on the console, they're still saying I need to create a new email address to associate my PSN account with or is it only for people who haven't changed their passwords yet or did so on the web?

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

My understanding is that it doesn't matter if you changed your password because they only need your email address and birth date in order to change your password and (maybe?) change your default email address.

The exploit is ONLY through the websites, not the ps3 itself. The websites are offline, so if they fix it and your pass hasn't been changed yet then you have nothing to worry about. A site I go to posted exactly how the exploit worked (since no one can use it as the sites are now down)

They can finally follow-up on the 2 jobs promise with "The PS3: You'll need two identities to enjoy it!"

4.5 days is longer then I thought it'd take honestly.

Definitely. I've never once heard about the RRoD on the news. Sony, by not getting out ahead of the story at the beginning of this fiasco, allowed so much misinformation out there that every news outlet was reporting "77 million identities stolen! Largest hack in history! Credit card numbers compromised!"

Really Sony?!? You fixed a major exploit only to have that exploited a few days later? Really?!?

Thanks for the correction.
It's possible that the website was used in that short time to access peoples' accounts, but, like you said, with the sites being down... no one can use that exploit anymore.

Let's not get overboard here, I know, there's still blame, but this issue is minor compared to the original problem.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

Ok so it sounds like unless someone changed my password (in which case I would have received an email alerting me of such) I should be ok. I can still login fine on my PS3 so I guess I'm good.

So which freebies are you guys leaning towards? I'm thinking Infamous and maybe Dead Nation. Not sure if I will get that or Wipeout. Once the store is back up I will have to try the demos of those (assuming there are demos) to see which one to go with.

Any word from Sony on what we need to do now? I changed my password through their site about five days ago and am not sure what to do now.

And...is this a real thing, meaning people's accounts are being changed, or is this just a concern about something that may/may not actually happen?

Someone with a lot more knowledge about all this techie crap...please tell me what I should do when I get home to ensure my PS3 sanity.

edit...maybe I should just wait to see if anything is wrong when I get home. F'n playstation. I love it, but this stuff is pushing the limits.

If you changed your password through their site then you should be able to log in to PSN fine via your PS3.

As stated earlier in the thread, you have nothing to worry about unless you've received an e-mail about your password being changed and you did not initiate the password change yourself.

No. To clarify, none of these reports say that the PSN was hacked again. They only say that individual PSN accounts potentially could have their password changed by someone who has the e-mail address and DOB associated with the account, due to an issue with Sony's web password reset. Even if that did happen to some users before the sites were taken down, the users would have received an e-mail saying their password was changed. This could have been a much bigger deal if it wasn't found so quickly, but as it is, it's really not that much of an issue. Certainly nothing remotely close to the original PSN hack.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

My point in posting the article was not that it was on the massive "hack" scale as before, but that Sony and PSN are still targets and the primary focus is going to be on them for a long time.

The FBI or any other "cyber police" group won't scare these people off, whether that's justified or idiotic.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

The official statement says it was not a hack but a URL exploit

We temporarily took down the PSN and Qriocity password reset page. Contrary to some reports, there was no hack involved. In the process of resetting of passwords there was a URL exploit that we have subsequently fixed.

Consumers who haven’t reset their passwords for PSN are still encouraged to do so directly on their PS3. Otherwise, they can continue to do so via the website as soon as we bring that site back up.
Since it's fixed it doesn't matter, but in case you are curious about what actually happened with this

Spoiler:
The prodecure is as follows:
1) Navigate to : https://store.playstation.com/accoun...d.action?token (this is normally, via email, https://store.playstation.com/accoun...YYYYYYYYYYYYYY with the y’s being a unique token) – do not enter the code at this point.
2) Open a new tab in firefox, and go to fr.playstation.com (other pages will work too most likely), and click Login (Connexion)
3) Click Recover password
4) Enter the email and date of birth of the target account
5) Click continue, then on the confirmation page, click “Reset using E-mail”
6) Switch back to the original tab, and enter the code, then click continue
7) You will now be asked to enter a new password for the target account

So it looks like the french site was giving the token up front instead of emailing it, and the token worked with all regions of the log in.

I sort of wish I had known this before it went dark. We have a family account that I tried to update but because I never activated it on my new PS3 they sent an email to the email address which got closed when I switched ISPs 6 months back. Now I'm not totally sure how to change the email addy since I can't log in anymore.
