Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread

The day Guitar Hero goes plug and play is the day I quit the franchise.

Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread

Got my copy from Activision yesterday and really only played one song on drums (Sex on Fire) to compare to the same song in RB... and it still feels off, sure part of it is I am using RB drums (they wouldn't send me GH ones) - and it seems oddly charted still.

Also, I noticed the fretboard or whatever it's called on drums is wider than it in in RB2, adding to the disorientated feeling...

Start packing your bags ...

It will be interesting to see where this is going, but I don't like it one bit.

It's probably because the game has to unnaturally fold 5 pads into 4.

And just to update my Guitar Hero 5 story:

I picked it up, along with a used GH:WT guitar, mainly for 3 reasons: free Van Halen offer, Party Play, and beginner mode. Since easy mode is still a little too advanced for my young kids, the beginner mode allows us to enjoy the game together. So, while I admit that the tracklist leaves much to be desired, there are enough fun songs on there for us to play as a family. As an added plus, they can both play guitar, and it's easier for them to pick up the guitar rhythm than the bass line. The only problem now is that they keep talking about how much they like "Sex On Fire".

I also picked up the Rock Band 2 special edition, and will eventually get The Beatles. I'm already enjoying RB2 quite a bit, and while I will probably agree that RB2 is "better" than Guitar Hero, as far as I'm concerned it doesn't have to be an either/or kind of thing.
I hear that. My five year old daughter likes to sing in Rock Band and she is an auditory kid so she memorizes lyrics ridiculously easily. There have been a few songs she has memorized that I have to raise an eyebrow and wonder if I should let her pick her own tune or not. Those are the ones i congratulate her on passing the song and say, "Don't sing that at Grandma's house."

It would work by me not playing Guitar Hero ever again.

But you know what I meant. They're talking about some "Guitar Hero Box" you plug straight into your TV. Not happening in my house.

Sorry, but I really was asking seriously how a "plug and play" would work. I still don't quite understand the concept of "some GH box you would plug straight into your TV."

As if, it would have it's own console, kinda?

It would basically be a Guitar Hero console, yes. A box that does nothing but play Guitar Hero. It would have to have wireless probably and a DVD/Blu Ray drive perhaps and jesus this is a stupid effing idea Activision...

The idea seems to exist solely because Activision wants more freedom in the online department. I'm guessing as far as days content can be released and pricing schemes.

Considering these box sets already cost as much as a game console (or more, looking at you Beatles), it really isn't that surprising of a move. Add $50 to the price tag and avoid the current consoles all together.

Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread

Instead of a "GH box" or GH specific "console", I'm worried it would be even worse than that...I have a feeling it would be like those old school joysticks with the Ms. Pac-man/etc. built right into them, where you just plug them into the TV set and play....
I have a bad feeling they'd build the game right into the guitar, which you'd then have to connect directly to your display....

This is exactly what I expect. Its cheap, and there is no service/support to be maintained on it. It either works or it doesn't. If it doesn't then you either get a replacement from them or throw it away and buy a new one.

Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread

Would it really only add $50 to the price? It would have to be at least PS2 quality to actually sell. I know they'd use some kind of flash memory instead of a disc drive, but it seems it would more expensive than just playing ball with the consoles.

Then again, maybe there's a decent enough profit margin on the peripherals that they would break even on this hardware.

Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread

They'd use the cheapest stuff they could get away with, and buy loads of it. The cost per unit would be next to nothing for Activision to manufacture.

And they would manufacture them by the boat loads. In every style, color, and musical genre you could think of.

Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread

I imagine it would be like this Star Station thing that was all the rage with the kiddies a few years ago:

Basically a karaoke machine that took cartridges with 5 or 6 songs on them. I imagine you'll plug the unit into the TV and it'll synch with 1 or 2 guitars, maybe even a full band. It'll come with a selection of songs on there already, but you'll be able to buy expansion cards for it at retail. They may get fancy and allow SD-type support for purchase directly from them, but that may open up pirating too quickly.

Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread

I think the ship has sailed on a stand-alone GH 'console.'

For something like that to succeed they would have to get everyone to repurchase instruments which is unlikely. I don't see how they could get away with making a Wii/360/PS3 guitar compatible with a separate device. Since all three manufacturers would be losing revenue with this as a competitor. There is no way in hell they would allow it. Then there's that little bit that none of your existing games would work on it whether it's disc based or not. They'd have to make a WiiPS60 combo drive for that to work. So pretty much zero incentive for anyone to switch to this model.

Sounds decent in theory they could open up their DLC as a subscription method and even charge less per track( right) since there would be no royalties going to the console makers.

Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread

Guess you guys didn't say the other things Kotick (Activision CEO) said during that same talk.

He pointed to changes he implemented in the past as being particularly beneficial, such as designing the employee incentive program so it, "really rewards profit and nothing else."

He later added, "We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games."

The executive said that he has tried to instill into the company culture "skepticism, pessimism, and fear" of the global economic downturn, adding, "We are very good at keeping people focused on the deep depression."
May be a great businessman in making Activision a lot of money, but he comes off as a complete fucking asshole to me.

Sean (from Harmonix) tweeted this on Monday when that story hit:

Feeling better. I will tomorow return to a workplace not ruled by pessimism, skepticism, and fear. Where its ok that making games is fun.

Cool idea but at the same time I ask myself it anyone would really want to play that? It took ages to load and the graphics were ancient.

Are some of you that stupid to think that Guitar Hero is moving to an ONLY non-console based format? Because that would be very very stupid to think. Very stupid. You aren't stupid, are you?

It's really no different than a "track pack" or something similar - just a different way to play GH content.
