"Terrific" sales of The Beatles: Rock Band are outpacing MTV/Harmonix parent Viacom's own expectations a week after its launch, says CEO Philippe Dauman.
"Sales have exceeded our internal projections and we’ve sold 25 per cent of our inventory in the first week,” said Dauman, speaking at New York's Goldman Sachs Communacopia Conference.
Viacom also says it is currently expecting about a 20 percent profit margin on the title, even though the royalty payout for the game is believed to be unusually costly to the company.
Up to $40 million is possible for band representative Apple Corps, recordings owner EMI, and catalog publishing rights owner Sony/ATV Music Publishing -- "not even comparable to anything that has been done before," according to Sony/ATV Music Publishing chairman Martin Bandier.
The news of The Beatles: Rock Band's strong debut comes even as the game was trumped by rival Guitar Hero 5 on the UK charts; Activision's competing franchise took the top spot on the all-platforms chart last week even with only two days on sale, while Beatles came in fourth.
Activision told the Financial Times that the release of The Beatles: Rock Band failed to impact GH5's momentum: "It did not affect our sales," said Guitar Hero division head Dan Rosensweig, who claimed a four-to-one sales ratio in favor of his game versus Beatles in the U.S. -- and nine-to-one in "other markets," according to the report.

The Beatles:RB should also help make any decisions about being an exclusive to GH just pure silliness.

Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread
Okay, I got a question. I have Guitar Hero 3 Legends of Rock. I have songs I downloaded from the game all on my hard drive. Can I play these on Guitar Hero 5? There doesn't appear to be a way to play them. I can't seem to even play the songs I paid and downloaded. Is there just no way to play them?

According to this week's Toys R Us ad, if you buy the GH5 guitar bundle for $99, you get the GH:WT bundle for free. And then of course you get GH:VH free by mail. So three games and two guitars for $99.

I'm not sure when it was announced, but I just saw the track pack for October 1st is Queens of the Stone Age, and they're all 3 tracks from the first Queens album. FUCK ME! That's gonna be painful to miss out on.

Aww shit, Triumph. It's a shame it's in GH.

Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread
So they are definitely sticking with 3 tracks only per week. Glad I've moved on.
I'll admit that some tracks there I would love to play. Billy Squire and the Classic pack for sure. But I can wait till these are brought into RB.

I love Triumph! Hopefully if "Lay It On the Line" sells well, they'll bring us "Fight the Good Fight" next. It would have been nice to have a 3 pack right off the bat with World of Fantasy or Magic Power included as well. Looking forward to the Billy Squier tracks too.

Wow....Lay it On the Line. That's been my most wanted song for like two years now. I'd rather see it in RB, but I'll take it any way I can get it. I'm also definitely in for the Billy Squier tunes and "Freeze Frame" too.

Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread
That's some solid DLC there -- specifically Billy Squier, J. Geils Band, & Triumph. Too bad I have given up on any and all GH DLC. I wouldn't be surprised if much of it ends up in RB, given the overlap between games lately and the fact that none of them are considered "top tier/exclusive" bands.
