High Fidelity (2000) — Seen this one a few times over the years, still great each viewing with John Cusack in his element, might even argue should've been nominated for an Oscar. I'm not a music fan but still liked that element and features a good supporting cast. ***¾/*****, B+

Ended the holiday season with a first viewing of
on VUDU free with ads (the ads actually weren't that bad).
As a horror/slasher fan, especially of the 'classic' style, I needed to see this. Pretty suspenseful.

Her (D: Jonze). It was a fun romance movie about a somewhat hapless guy falling in love with an AI computer operating system. Spoiler: it was good for him.
It had one plot hole that ruined the movie for me. She demonstrates in the first few minutes of the movie that she can read every email he's ever sent between the words of a conversation, and make decisions on which are worth keeping and which can just be trashed. She can make millions of decisions per second. Yet she goes away for days when she "has to think about us." I couldn't forget that she was a computer and I couldn't just go with it.

So in other words, that part of the movie....
did not compute?
I had wanted to see that but haven't. Glad it was fun.

It was on Fuse but they just edited the F word and kept the other swear words in so I assumed I got the full movie
The lead was also in Hooking Up.

Bare Knuckles Amazon Prime
Robert Viharo is Zachery Kane, a LA bounty hunter pursuing a privileged, Mother-obsessed serial killer.
Robert Viharo was the poor man's "William Smith", which will mean something if you're a fan of '70s "Tough Guy" movies. "Bare Knuckles" is a big thick slice of "70s cheese with every cliche in the book, and a few that were just in the margins. The Police Captain gives Kane the "I don't know who's worse..." speech, there's a ninja-trained killer who makes cat-hisses when he fights, a car chase, a high fall at the end, and all the "wocketa-wocketa" music you could ever ask for. If you appreciate a certain kind of low-budget "B" (or maybe "C") movie, you might get a chuckle out of this.

The Chaser (2008, Korea). A thriller about a pimp, who's a former cop, trying to track down one of his girls. He gradually realizes that she's been taken by a serial killer and wants to save her life. The police are useless in many thrillers and horror movies. It's usually just a device to leave the protagonist on his or her own. This movie is deeply angry at police incompetence. Exciting and disturbing. It never lets up.

Another James Franco vanity project?
A great cast wasted on a boring and weird movie.
I got some chuckles when Will Ferrell appeared on screen but that was about it.

David Byrne's American Utopia - I wasn't sure what to make of it as it started, but by the end I found it joyous. As I am working from home for the foreseeable future, I can't imagine I won't be watching (or at least listening) to this a few more times. (HBO Max)
Tower Heist - I remember thinking this was funny when I saw it the first time. Meh. (HBO Max)
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Extended) - I went ahead and bought a 4K digital copy of all six films when I got the stimulus check. I hadn't seen this movie since the theater where I found it overlong and just disappointing. Breaking it up into three nights helped with the "how much longer is this?" problem I had in the theater, but it is still a pale comparison to the first set of films. Freeman is a good Bilbo though. Sexton Blake and the Hooded Menace (1938). Super detective Sexton Blake against a cabal of super criminals. It was silly but highly entertaining. One distinctive camera shot was re-used in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Spielberg thought the movie was good enough to steal from it.
Sexton Blake was popular in British detective/action fiction for eighty years. The print was sharp, which is nice for public domain antiques. (Classic Movie Vault)

It might be predictable but I was entertained and based on a true and nice story and anything with Miami usually draws me in.

The Hunt - I had an A-list reservation to see this movie the day that all the theaters closed last March. Nearly ten months later I finally got to see it. I thought it was a bit of a mixed bag. There were things I liked, and things I didn't. (MA)

The Shadow Strikes (1937). It's a dud. The mystery makes no sense, and there isn't enough Shadow activity. He shows up in costume at the beginning to establish the character, and once in the last ten minutes. The rest of the time he impersonates a family lawyer. (Classic Video Vault)

City Hall (1996) — Saw this one maybe 20 years ago and for whatever reason had a hankering to check it out again. Not great or ambitious as it sounds and pacing was a bit off, but in general found it engaging and had solid performances. I do wonder how much better it could have been under someone like Scorsese. ***½/*****

I wish City Hall got a Blu-ray release.
It also looks like a movie Lumet might have done too.

Samsara. Beautiful images from all over the world shot on 70mm film, including time lapse 70mm shot by starlight. No words. If you liked Koyaanisqatsi, you'll like this. We were pleased.

Lethal Weapon 4 - Hopefully final Lethal Weapon movie has it's moments, but it also feels a little slapdash. At the time I liked it a lot more than 3. (Blu-ray)

WW1984 - Saw this in an IMAX theater last month and decided to rewatch it while it was still available. I know it's taking a beating in another thread on this board, but I liked it. I didn't care for the ending the first time around, but I even liked that a little more this time. (HBO Max)
The Change-Up - This should have worked, but it's almost too vulgar. (HBO Max)
