Buried Alive (1990) — Entertaining enough made-for-cable TV horror-thriller moves at a brisk pace and has a great finale. Good performances from the three main cast members with Tim Matheson, Jennifer Jason Leigh and William Atherton (surprise surprise plays a scumbag) makes this worth checking out (saw it on Blu-ray from Kino Lorber). ***½/*****, B

Lucy In The Sky HBO
Natalie Portman, John Hamm, Dan Stevens. Directed by Noah Hawley.
Lucy, -an astronaut, -goes on a space mission and has her mind blown. Upon her return to Earth, Lucy just isn't the same, and she begins to exhibit risky and uncharacteristic behavior.
It begins with "Inspired by true events" and Noah Hawley has shown where he can go with that in his series "Fargo". The movie starts well, and Portman is quite engaging. However, once Lucy ends up in an affair with a fellow astronaut it became another tiresome domestic drama. A disappointment for me.

Jason Goes To Hell
Jason X Shout Factory
Two films at the end of the F13 cycle that try to do something different with the franchise. I knew going in that "Hell" was one of the more divisive films in the series, -while it's finally allowed to go nuts with the gore, Jason becomes a body-swapping evil force rather than a hockey-masked killer. Personally, I really enjoyed the film, and listening to the interviews with the writer/director with regard to Horror films, we seem to be on a similar wave-length. "Jason X" is reminiscent of Roger Corman productions like "Galaxy of Terror" and while the limited CGI shows it's age, it knows it's a "B" movie and has fun with it. A good slate of extras for both.

The Beast with Five Fingers (S: Peter Lorre). A crawling hand movie. Three-quarters through the movie I said, "This movie is great, but I've never heard of it. It must have a bad ending." Sadly, I was right. (Svengoolie)

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind - 2nd viewing for me, first was probably 15 years ago. I still really like it. It's quite imaginative and visually spectacular and pretty action-packed. The environmental and anti-war cautionary lessons are more relevant than ever. I do wish there were just a bit more of an epilogue, as it ends pretty abruptly after the climax, but it's a minor thing. I need to catch up on several of the Studio Ghibli films that I've never seen, but this is still one of my favorites so far.

John Carter - One of those early '10s Taylor Kitsch starring vehicles. Honestly, it still didn't make that much of an impression on me either way. It's fine. (Disney+)
In a Valley of Violence - I felt like watching a western, and I had added this to my Netflix que a little while ago. I suppose it's entertaining enough, but it really isn't anything you haven't seen before done better. (Netflix)

What was annoying the aspect ration changed from 4:3 to widescreen constantly which was weird

Kind of boring but at least Fogler did not get on your nerves like he did in Take Me Home Tonight.
The Carl's Jr bimbo was in it too

Decided to watch this again after 10 years.
If you want to relive the 80's watch a 80's movie.
Demetri Martin was probably the only bright spot and Fogler was beyond annoying.

It also had some sequences in 1:85, but because of the transfer it played as "windowboxed". I can see the shifting ratios as a symbol of her disorientation upon her return to Earth, but it seemed too random to connect with me, -it just felt like an artistic whim. Perhaps it was more effective in the theater.

Critical Care - I felt like Lumet was trying to make the spiritual sequel to Network with this satire/indictment of the medical community, but it is not a good or particularly insightful movie. Spader's lead performance is especially grating. (HBO Max)
Bullitt - McQueen classic feels of it's time. (HBO Max)
Unsane - Claire Foy stars a wrongfully(?) committed woman who may or may not be terrorized by a stalker. Soderbergh is a terrific director and parts of this movie work, but overall I would probably call it a misfire. (VUDU)

I thought it was ok for a Mon night and Josh Hutcherson surprisingly was not horrible as the bad guy.
Had no idea the lead is or was Dev Patel's girlfriend.

30 Minutes or Less - I've watched this a few times through the years (it being short helps). Still find it an entertaining time killer. (Netflix)
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (extended edition) - Continuing my Middle-earth project, this is once again the first time I watched this since the theater. Unlike the first film, breaking this up over three nights was not as successful at improving the entertainment value. I am now reminded why I never bothered seeing the third movie....until next week! Ugh! (MA)

Moby Dick (1956) - Fine performance by Gregory Peck as the obsessive Captain Ahab. The special effect on the whale was real good at that time.

Fatman (2020) — Fun dark Christmas movie featuring two great performances from Mel Gibson, making for a grisly and bitter Santa Claus, and Walton Goggins doing what he does best, playing a ruthless bad guy. Somewhere in the middle was getting concerned the movie wasn't reaching its full potential, but the ending pretty much made up for it. ***½/*****
