Re: UHD release announcements
$49.99 would seem likely.

Well, Criterion has had higher MSRPs for years, even though other boutique labels can sell Blus and 4Ks cheaper.

Re: UHD release announcements
Sure, but at the same time, Criterion's MSRP for DVDs was $39.95. The premium over the previous MSRP when Criterion finally embraced Blu-ray was 0%. I don't expect them to do the same for Ultra HD Blu-ray, as nice as that would be -- an extra $10 has always been my guess, although $20 is conceivable -- the idea that they'd literally double the MSRP (or go even beyond that!) seems to me to be divorced from reality. Especially if they take a single SKU approach -- where if you want the BD, you have to get the UHD disc (and vice versa) -- that's suicidal.

Re: UHD release announcements
- 4K disc will have just the main feature
- Blu-ray disc will have the main feature + extras
I know, it'll make all the BD-only fans cry, so not likely to happen. Still... that's my preference. Better than having to sift through the B&N stock ensuring I don't grab the wrong case

Edit: I just hope they stay away from triple-layer UHD discs except for long-ass titles that genuinely need it. A good HEVC encode of most films should fit nicely on 2 layers without breaking a sweat. My experience has been that triple-layer discs are more prone to scratch/scuff-related read errors, and, um, backing up issues.

Re: UHD release announcements
It’s the approach that makes the most sense to me too. When Criterion embraced Blu-ray, they were pretty quickly on their way to high-def for their entire line. That’ll never be the case here; it’ll always just be an additional thing they’re able to do when it makes sense.
Don’t futz with different packaging. Don’t futz with spine renumbering. Just pack an additional disc in the box, maybe have a different colored sticker or something, and you’re good to go!

A black sticker to match all the other black UHD cases everyone else uses!

GRUV has this as a preorder for 54.99 ($79.99 on Amazon). This photo from that page confirms Spanish Dracula as an extra. But doesn't say if it's in 4k.

Re: UHD release announcements
Any mention anywhere of a possible steelbook release for the 4k monsters set?

^ I see individual steelbooks for Dracula and Frankenstein on Best Buy, but not the others. And no steelbook for the full set, either. Seems like they're following the Hitchcock releases in that sense.

Re: UHD release announcements
I’m very tempted to preorder the Monsters UHD collection — that price will be difficult to beat — but I kind of want to hear what the reception is like once people have the discs in-hand.

Good news for fans of the Universal Classic Monsters: We've confirmed with the studio that the new ICONS OF HORROR COLLECTION #UltraHD set will include BOTH versions of DRACULA (original & Spanish) in actual #4K.
