Re: UHD release announcements

Rocky 1-4 set is up for preorder on amazon. Feb 28 release date. I would post pics of the art but this site hasn't let me post pics in ages.

Yup, this collection does not have V and Balboa.

I'm curious as to why. Is that a no go for all of you here?

Following the Star Trek movie collection playbook, apparently.

The artwork looks cheap like those Warner Bros triple feature sets where you get 3 movies in one

Yes, it's definite no-go. I'm sure most of us already have one of the complete Blu-ray collections. Although I'm a big fan of the Rocky movies, there is no way I'm ever buying a partial set. I'm not one who thinks Creed needs to be included, as that is still an ongoing franchise, but there is no excuse to not have the full catalog of Rocky movies.

Re: UHD release announcements

I'll go the other way. I like Balboa, but the first 4 are really what this franchise is all about. I've seen V. I probably don't need to see it again. And if I did want to see it again, the blu-ray would more than suffice.

As for why Rocky V and Rocky Balboa aren’t included, Stallone is apparently working on new cuts of those films as well, which won’t be ready until later in 2023. So it’s very likely that those films are forthcoming on 4K Ultra HD as well, in the months ahead.

The Rocky 4K collection is down to $59.99 on Amazon. Had it on pre-order and it did adjust.

I can definitely understand the desire to recut V, but wasn't Rocky Balboa well received and a pretty big success? Did it need recutting?

On the flip side of that, Stallone recutting V seems problematic given that he didn't direct that one himself.

Re: UHD release announcements

I mean Stallone wrote V, so he probably has his original script notes. He would just need to locate Avildsen’s footage at MGM and work off his script notes, storyboards and such. It shouldn’t be that hard.

This is what someone said on the other forum:
MGM had scanned the OCN for the theatrical cut of Rocky V. Stallone wanted to work on a recut of V and got MGM to find elements to most of the scenes shot and trimmed in the final version. His recut of V isn't finished yet but news of release dates will drop by the time it's finished.

Rocky Balboa was shot 35mm but edited and finished 2k (one scene at the end was shot digital). They were about to finalize a 4k HDR rebuild of the theatrical cut (with that one ending scene upscaled from the DI) until Stallone insisted on making a new cut with the alternate ending and other unused stuff MGM found.

Re: UHD release announcements

I mean who am I to tell Stallone how to end his movie, but changing the ending of Rocky Balboa to the alternate ending (him winning) seems to miss the point of the movie.

I hope Stallone doesn't recut Balboa with the alternate ending.

Couldn't have said it better myself. I guess this will appeal to those who don't care for V & VI, but I figure most of us will hold off until all 6 are released.

Re: UHD release announcements

I also hope they cleaned up new new cut of Rocky IV. Some of the edits seemed kind of the sloppy. I think I heard that he was rushed to finish it so hopefully those little flaws are fixed.
I'd actually prefer a hybrid version of Rocky IV, but I don't see that happening.

Do we know yet if the Rocky IV release will also include the original cut, or is it the new cut only?

Shout Factory announced a bunch of new UHD releases for March:

No specs yet, but Exorcist III does appear to include two cuts.

Re: UHD release announcements

Read that Hitchcock Vol. 3 (so the rest of the Universal flicks) is coming out in May.

I've been holding off on these as, given Universals track record, a big boxset at a lower cost is probably to follow.

Reportedly without North by Northwest, which I didn't think was super-likely, but still, hope springs eternal. So I guess I'll need to re-purchase Warner's individual release when I retire the old Universal BD set.

Yeah, hell, some of those Warner DVDs aren't even on Bluray yet, if I recall correctly.

All my Hitch is still DVD dating back to the Masterpiece felt box collection. I almost bit on that Bluray set with some episodes of the show and North By Northwest but have been waiting to see how the 4k thing plays out considering how great the reviews were for flicks like Vertigo and Trouble With Harry.

As far as titles that Warner controls goes, Mr. and Mrs. Smith is the only one that hasn't made the leap to 1080p. I'm hopeful for a Warner Archive release this year or maybe next.

I was disappointed by Universal's Hitchcock collection on BD (lots of old, lousy masters), but both of their UHD sets have bowled me over. I'm looking forward to volume 3, even if that means I have to brave Topaz again.
