re: The Criterion Collection 4K/Blu-ray Discussion and Release Thread

I watched The Decameron last night. I enjoyed it, but was thrown off by the heavy use of ADR. Did Passolini use live microphones on set, or was the entire film dubbed? I thought some of the actors might have been non-Italians saying their lines in their native tongues, and had their dialogue dubbed later on.

This was common practice in Italian film production at the time. All dialogue was ADRed. No microphones were used on set. Cast members frequently spoke different languages on camera.

In many cases, the dialogue may not have even been written until post-production. Fellini was famous for having his actors just recite their grocery lists to get their lips moving.

Yeah, ADR was the norm in Italy. Those Leone westerns? ADR.

^ ^^ Thanks, I thought that might have been the case. I know this proctice was prevalent in the HK film industry, I just didn't know it was the same in Italy.

Nice clue, especially as Henry Winkler has the same initials as Haskell Wexler.

I've never heard of it either, but I saw on Wikipedia it's been selected for preservation by the Library of Congress.

Any chance that they have been able to license the Wild Man Fischer song that had to be changed during the roller derby scene ("Merry-go-round")? Knowing just a little about it, I suspect not.

They do tend to tweet about lots of "important" films that aren't necessarily in their collection though.

Talking about The Shining...correct me if I'm wrong. Doesn't The Shining have issues. OAR not being maintained and I think colors being a little bit off at times?

colors are wrong when the tennis ball rolls to danny in the hallway but the OAR is debatable.

Discussing Kubrick and OAR is opening an enormous can of worms.

Yeah, the aspect ratio on the Shining BD is fine, but the pink tennis ball and toy truck are absurd and inexplicable. It takes me out of the movie every time.

Are you asking about the aspect ratio or the colors?
