The Original Christmas Classics set is $12.99 (matching Target's sale price). I went ahead and bought using the $5 credit I mentioned previously.

People should be aware that one of the BDs has a glitch and needs a replacement. This problem affects all sets. A replacement fix hasn't been set up yet.

The Collected Works of Hayao Miyazaki (Amazon Exclusive) is down to $165. Been waiting for this, and at around $15 a movie, I'm in.

Hrmmm. So they fixed the dubtitles from what I'm reading on one review. Is that correct?

Re: Amazon discounts and deals on Blu-ray

Yeah, a couple of reviews called that out. That was one of my main motivators to finally get it. That and of course the price.

Re: Amazon discounts and deals on Blu-ray

But Kiki still has a dub based on the Macek translation. Also no extras, they stripped them all out except what's on the bonus disc, which is true to what they did for the Japanese edition but still...

Re: Amazon discounts and deals on Blu-ray

Disney is REALLY lazy w/ their disc releases. They'll do it justice for video and audio for the most part but trying to get them to get features on something? Damn near have to beat them. We're lucky we get anything on the Marvel stuff.

Catalog wise... it gets iffy sometimes. They may remaster it but then they'll change colors or fuck the audio somehow... etc.

At the same time.... I see reviews that say that they're just dubtitles too. Even the most recent ones.

Re: Amazon discounts and deals on Blu-ray

One review says they have dubtitles and another says they're not. Well, which is it? The only time I watch an English dub is for Cowboy Bebop. And no special features, either? I wonder what led to that decision.

Solid Snake 12-13-15 12:11 AM

Re: Amazon discounts and deals on Blu-ray

Yeah. Cowboy Bebop has a dub that... I think I find superior to the original voicework. I like the Japanese one fine... but there's so much flavor to the English cast.

Mononoke and Castle in the Sky have dubtitles fixed. Kiki is using the old Streamline dubtitles which are supposedly more accurate than the last release. Ponyo Japanese audio is lossless.

Special features on disc are stripped out, most notably on the Castle of Cagliostro release, but like I said before I think that's true of the Japanese edition of this too, maybe to keep the focus on Miyazaki and the films?

I'm kinda surprised they actually made masters specifically for this set instead of just throwing what they had already pressed into this box set. For most of these this is pretty much like getting the imports without the import cost (although the Japanese version of this also had all movies in separate cases).

In a weird way, one of the bonuses in this set is that you shouldn't have to sit through unskippable Disney commercials every time when you pop in a disk.

Amazon Canada has The Complete James Bond collection without the Digital downloads for $64.24 shipped to the USA using their currency converter so probably cheaper buying in Canadian $ depending on your credit card. Bilingual Cover, La Collection James Bond.

When I try linking to the set it goes to the Canadian set on the US Amazon site.

So no matter what.... Mononoke, CitS, and Kiki are fucked w/ dubtitles?

Everything else has accurate subtitles...?

Is that right, that Ghibli considers the Streamline dubtitles to be correct subtitles for Kiki?

Mononoke and CitS have accurate subtitles in this set, taken from the Japanese release. I don't think Ghibli ever did their own Kiki subtitles.

Thanks, think I'm going to pull the trigger at that price as I'd added it to my shopping cart in a recent sale, but I don't think it was this low, and I don't own the movie in any format.

Hard to lump together stuff like Ghibli and Marvel as Disney's fault as those properties are very different.

Quite - Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars... all those are VERY different and separate parts of the company, with little real overlap/focus in product (and even audience).

Whereas Ghibli is - unless I missed something - JUST distributed by Disney and not even another spoke of the same wheel, but an entirely different deal. There may even be guidelines about they can and can't do for those discs...
