Any reason you couldn't get a new PS3 and swap the HDD with the one you have now? Or is it the HDD which went bad?

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

Well the old PS3 is the fat launch one, the other one I have is the slim model. I guess I just assumed that you couldn't swap the HDs?

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

You definitely can. Both versions of the PS3 use a standard 2.5" SATA drive (I don't know about the new, new redesign...). I swapped mine on the old fat model a few years back to expand the storage.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

It'll fit, but it was my understanding that unlike an Xbox, this HDD is encrypted and can't be transferred to another PS3 without wiping all the data. Isn't that correct?

Edit : I just checked and I'm right. You can swap an original HDD for another, as Noonan (and I) did. But you can't use a HDD from one PS3 in another machine. Stupid, but that's the way it is.

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

Ok. My only concern now is as to whether the HD will just reformat itself when the switch occurs. Ie - can I keep my saves? Thanks for all the help btw.

See my post above. You'll wipe your HDD and reformat it.

If it's really important to you, call Sony. They can sometimes repair or salvage the data at their repair site.

It's too late you you now, but PS Plus has a feature to back up game saves to the cloud and I've been careful to make sure that's enabled in all my games.

Yes, if you put your HDD in a new PS3, the new PS3 will format it before it does anything else, so you can't keep your saves that way. Basically, unless you can get your PS3 running long enough to do a backup to an external HDD or to the PS+ cloud, your data is gone.

Oh wow; that sucks. I didn't know it worked that way.

The only problem with the auto backup feature is that you have to set your account to auto-login in order for it to work. I don't want to auto-login, I want it to make me select the account to use when it starts up, because I know if I set it to auto login, my wife will play something like Just Dance or something on my profile, and I don't want those trophies in my history.

I try to do my own backups to the cloud whenever I make any signficant progress in a game.

Unrelated to saves, but if you go through Sony repairs, they will offer you a refurb Slim for $99 vs. repairing your fatty for $130.

I sent mine in a week or so ago and am awaiting my new slim.

PSN Game share question: I know last year they changed the limit form 5 -> 2 for number of consoles you can play purchased games on. Is the limit the same for purchased full games? Am I imagining, that they limit it to 1 for full-price games? Specifically asking for LBPKarting.

It is the same for retail games and DLC. Incedently, there is a way to get 4 PS3s to share the same game, but I am not up on the particulars as I only stick to long term share groups now. There is a huge thread on CAG for gamesharing in the PS3 forum.

great thanks. not looking to scam the system too bad, I've got a buddy that I split PSN games with, and was excited to see this was getting a Day-of PSN release.

For a lot of the games that have online multiplayer, they usually have a 24-hour account lock - meaning, if you sign in, your friend can't sign into the game until 24 hours after you've signed off.

Trying to pop on for a quick game or two of BFBC2 in-between class and work and it won't find any multiplayer games. Says it's looking but then stops, doesn't even say it can't find any. I've even been dropped into empty maps before, but nothing this morning. Is it my internet connection? My PS3? The PSN? Dice servers? Obama?

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

I've had this happen before, but it was right after I picked up the game. Only thing I found was that one of my kids changed the parental control setting on my account. I can only suggest to make sure that it is specifically set to no controls. Other than that, if you can sign in with your PSN account then that isn't at play.

Turns out someone else from my PSN friends list had the same issue so it must be beyond my personal game / PS3 / internet connection.

I didn't see any 500GB drives there, but Newegg has a 750GB drive for $60: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822148599

Note that it spins at 7200 RPM, so it may generate more heat. However, at least one reviewer claims the temperature was almost the same as with a 5400 RPM drive.

So i'm finally getting a PS3 since I ordered the $199 black friday bundle; for my Hamony One remote, is the best option just getting the Logitech PS3 adapter for it, or is there a cheaper option that's just as efficient?

Can't speak from personal experience, but I've heard that's the cleanest option.

I bought a cheap Nyko ps3 remote that comes with a USB infra red adapter. It does everything but control power.

I use the NYKO remote too. The only thing it won't do is turn the PS3 on and off but since I need to get up to put the disc in anyway I don't care.

I have two PS3s, both in rooms where I use a Logitech Harmony remote and I strongly recommend the Logitech adapter. It's a little pricey, but it works flawlessly, controls power, offers lots of placement flexibility, and doesn't take up a USB port.
