Agreed. I don't understand the need for yet another redesign. I suppose they could be trying to drum up some kind of new interest to compete with the Wii U launch, but that seems ill-conceived. They could take much more away from the Wii U launch by announcing the PS3's successor and detailing specs.

Or just cut the price of current models, and hype how much more powerful and cheaper it is than WiiU

I just assumed it was cheaper to produce.

Early word has the Wii U as the more powerful of the two, by a not-so-insubstantial amount (though honestly the only thing to support that so far is Black Ops II running in 1080p @ 60fps, instead of the lower resolution PS3 version (which upscales to 1080p anyhow)). But after 6 years that's kind of expected. Wii U looks to be this generations Dreamcast, really solid but destined to be ignored for whats on the horizon (at the time, PS2 and Microsoft's rumored console. Now it's the PS4 and Xbox 360 Part Deux). Even the Tablet remotes remind me of VMUs

But a PS3 is a PS3, and I don't get the price hike (frankly it's too expensive at $249), or the need for a 500gb version?

I think they're gearing it up to be a mostly download only console once the PS4 is out. Giving people a bigger HDD so they can keep up with new stuff coming out.

I guess it has been a while since I've downloaded anything from PSN, it faster these days? I'm still rocking my 60gb PS3, which is now painfully loud.

I've got a 500GB in mine, and it's more than half full, especially now with the free PSN+ game library

Ding ding ding! We have a winner!

That's the main reason for the super slim, cheaper to produce. I'm sure we'll get a price drop right around the WiiU launch.

It's not as slow as it used to be but it is still slow. I like that all my updates are done while I sleep thanks to PSN+

Amazon has all video game deals in the Gold Box today. Looks like two possible opportunities for PS3 headsets - hopefully, one of them is the official Sony headset, which is awesome. The second of these two descriptions strikes me as more likely to be the Sony headset:

4:00 PM PDT - Upcoming Deal
Advanced Bluetooth gaming headset for Playstation 3

8:00 PM PDT - Upcoming Deal
Immerse yourself in dynamic surround sound while enjoying crystal-clear communication on the PlayStation Network

The current version is wireless with virtual 7.1 sound. I assume that's what will be on special. I got it at launch for $59.99. It's pretty good, although a little hot to wear for extended periods. It's virtual 7.1 with games only -- movies just play back in stereo. And for the uber-geek, no, you can't wear it along with 3D glasses -- I tried. :(

Looks like black PS3 controllers are in the gold box right now for $34.99. I have two but one of them has an X button that's gotten "sticky" and just doesn't work right. Is there an easy way to fix this that's safe and cheap or is this gold box deal probably my best bet?

Hoping to get some feedback before time runs out, thanks.

I just picked up Portal 2 for $9.xx at Sears on clearance. I have never played Portal 1, much less this one. I have no clue what to expect, I know next to nothing about the game. I can't wait to finally give the series a shot.

Orange Box should be super cheap. Buy that and play the original Portal first.

MC, is that just for the experience or will I be totally lost going into Portal 2 blind?

Re: The Official PS3 thread - Aaaaannnnnnddddd we're back!

I played Portal 2 without playing the first. I'm sure there were some inside references that I missed but I was in no way lost. It's a complete game on its own. Portal isn't a game you're playing for the story. It's all about the puzzles and humor in the dialogue.

You won't be lost by not playing Portal first. Portal teaches the basics, but I'm sure Portal 2 covers it all again.

However, you really will be missing out on a fantastic game. It's very short, by comparison, but it's well worth the effort and hilarious.

That was more along the lines of what I was thinking. Portal 2 stands on it's own, and yeah there will be a few jokes you miss but more than anything you're just missing out on one of the best games this gen by skipping the first.

I think I prefer it to the second.

I have Portal 2 for PS3 sitting in my backlog, which I also picked up on clearance for 9.98 (at Target). Never played the first Portal, but I'm thinking I'll pick it up on steam at some point before I start portal 2. The Orange Box is OOP and overpriced even used on PS3 for some reason (plus there is no trophy support).

OB is $29 used at GS for either PS3 or 360. Pretty expensive considering how old it is but an amazing value for the money. It was a steal at full price.

Dunno if yuo ended up buying a new controller but I was talking to an acquantance who is into modding and he told me that if you dissassemble the old controller and clean it with a gentle toothbrush and alcohol wipes it will bee like new. sticking buttons are usually deadskin and oils from your hands. Here's a couple of videos on dissassebling and reassembling them

I've taken apart a handful of controllers and the DS is one I wouldn't recommend doing, especially if you've never taken any apart. Most come apart in a couple pieces. Once you remove the final screw from the DS the thing crumbles into a hundred pieces before you can even see what's going on. It's a nightmare to piece back together.

My launch model PS3 just bit the dust. Does anyone know of a site where I could download PS3 saves? In particular I'd prefer not to have to replay half of RE6 again. Any advice or direction would be appreciated.
