Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread
I think this is the moral of the story for me. GH:WT did so much to turn me off that this is too little, too late. Plus with everyone here saying the audio mixes are off, I'm feeling better and better about my decision to pass.
When it hits a decent clearance price in a year or so, I may give it a chance. Or if I can borrow it from someone, but I'm the big rhythm game fan in my circle so that seems unlikely.

Having spent a couple hours in the game myself, I agree with Hokeyboy (just for another opinion, to justify everyone else waiting to buy.
) GH5 is the game GH:WT should have been.

GH:WT was trash so that doesn't really say much imo lol
I swear I said "Who the fuck are these people" more times in that game than any other band game.

How about all the Guitar Hero thread crappers move to another thread. Some people seem to like the Guitar Hero franchise. Most seem to be judging this game before they have even played it. Sure GH:WT had it's problems but calling it trash is a little harsh.

Take the good with the bad. It's not thread-crapping to talk about the problems with a game. In fact, the positives and negatives of the game seem to be pretty consistent from person to person.

Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread
having spent 2hours last night playing GH5 and with the new guitar, it feels, i dont know, like nothing special. I guess my view is the same is this is what World Tour should have been, but it just feels like "Oh crap, throw 85 songs on a disk, get rid of xxxx, and lets sell it".... Sure, some of the songs are fun, but it just feels like all this could be DLC or something.
As for the guitar, did they actually change anything besides the body? Everything thing there feels the same, keys, strum bar, everything.... Had I not got the game and guitar for $90, and had $100 GC laying around, I would be upset with myself for buying it. My suggestion... rent or borrow it, dont buy it.

It was crap, and people here agree. Just so you know, I own all of the guitar hero's. So before making sweeping claims, you might want to check on your facts.
Oh, and please point out to me where I said that GH5 was bad before playing it. I was actually thinking about buying it last night

I just want to know what is going to happen with the song importing from GH:WT
35 out of 85 songs just seems really weak.
I have a feeling they'll do it in batches and charge for each set. I can't see them getting to a point that almost all 85 are importable and letting it go for just the 280 points I paid to import the current set.

Okay, here is the unabridged story of my supposed "Release Date Delivery" copy of GH5. It's hitting the road like a Presidential candidate on the last day before an election.
Looks like I get it this morning though. Hope it brought me souvenirs -- it is my birthday after all.

Happy birthday man, and enjoy your game... Even if amazon does fail at release date delivery sometimes :P
Edit. Read that again. To be fair, it appears that UPS failed on next day delivery

I've had something similar happen before, except for over a week. A package kept going back and forth between Kentucky and New Mexico - three full round-trips.
I'll still take UPS over that other courier service Amazon uses every once in a while. The last package sent to me using that service, they just left it sitting in the dirt next to a seldom-used door outside my office building instead of actually bringing it up to my floor and, you know, delivering it. Fortunately someone in the building who was taking a smoke break found it and brought it the rest of the way.

Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread
OK, I'm torn between the glowing reviews and the free Van Halen offer, and the online fans saying "meh".
Here's my situation:
Last Christmas we bought GHIII:Legends of Rock for the Wii, and I chose that mainly because of the setlist. We bought a two guitar bundle, so we've already got two guitars. The wife and I had a lot of fun with the game, and I still play occasionally (I'm trying to finish up my career; 2 songs left in Hard and maybe 15 left in Expert). But, my 4 and 5 year old couldn't really join us in the game, since Easy mode is still a little beyond their dexterity level.
Then I got GH: Metallica, which I enjoyed, and the kids can join me by playing in beginner mode, which they love. But, there's only so many songs on the Metallica tracklist that appeal to, and are appropriate for, my boys who just turned 5 and 6.
So now I read the reviews for GH:5, and two things pop out at me: Party Mode, and the ability for multiple people to play the same instrument. This seems ideal for my situation, especially since I've tried to include non-gamers into playing it a few times, with limited success. So I'm thinking I pick this up, get Van Halen for free, and then also pick up a third guitar and drums (used) for $10 each at Game Crazy, and pick up a microphone sometime down the road.
For a casual, family-and-friends gamer like me, this seems like a pretty cheap way to try out the whole band thing. I know most of the more hardcore gamers much prefer Rock Band, and 15 years ago I would probably be much more nitpicky about the game. But so far I really don't have any problem with the Guitar Hero gameplay.
Am I crazy? Should I just suck it up and go down the Rock Band path, since that's where I ultimately want to be? And does Rock Band have a similar drop-in-and-drop-out mode like the new Party Mode?
One other thought: I've never dealt with any of the DLC. Would I be able to rent GH:WT, and then get those tracks downloaded if I have GH:5?

Rock Band doesn't have a drop-in/drop-out party mode, but really I don't see that as a big deal. Most songs top out at 5 minutes and you can quit if someone wants to join right then or doesn't want to play anymore.
Rock Band has a much better selection of DLC (close to 700 tracks right now) so you can better customize your overall library. Plus they have Spongebob.
But it's really personal preference. Do whatever you're comfortable with.

In Rock Band, only one person can play a particular instrument.
The exception is two guitars. One will be playing lead, the other will be playing bass. But, if you want to play with 4 people, you'll need two guitars, drums and a mic.
There is a no fail mode which is used to cover situations where a person can't play as well so that you get through the entire song without worrying about someone failing out and causing the song to end.
If someone wants to leave, you have to all quit or that person needs to finish the song before you can "reform" the band.
I'm not sure on the renting GH:WT to download them into GH5.. You need the code from the manual as part of the process. Most game rental places don't have the manuals. Or, if they did, they are probably long gone.

The drawback with the lack of a drop-in/drop-out feature in RB is that it makes setting up setlists pointless if you know you are going to switch up instruments. Unless everyone plays at the same difficulty on each instrument, which is rarely the case, changing up is a PITA.

That's a good point. I haven't encountered that yet because we just always turn on No Fail Mode anyway as our meetings are completely casual and drunk.

Re: Guitar Hero: The One and Only Thread
While the game is much better than World Tour, the sound (the most important part of a music game) is terrible.
On another note, I was not going to buy this game (after not liking III or WT all that much). "One Big Holiday" by My Morning Jacket pushed me over the edge, as I've wanted that song in a music game ever since I started playing music games. Sadly, it's pretty hard and not nearly as much fun as I imagined.
