Re: Resident Evil 5

Man, what a disappointment. I love the RE series (RE1, 2, and 4 would easily make it on my list of top 20 games of all time). But if this demo is any indication, this game is going to suck, which is a shame because it's fucking gorgeous. I hate the controls (this point has been beaten to death already, but I just wanted to include it*), I hate the real-time inventory system, I hate the poor camera angle, and I especially hate having to constantly be on the lookout for a partner (that's one of my least favorite game mechanics ever). Bottom line, this game was going to be a day-one purchase, but now I don't even know if I'll bother renting it.

* I'm apparently one of the few that never hated the "classic" RE controls, but I thought the new controls for RE4 were a breath of fresh air for the series. But with RE5's increased focus on action over suspense when compared to RE4, the controls simply don't work (using Type D and the fastest aiming speed, for the record). Not being able to move and shoot is simply crippling, especially when combined with the new real-time inventory system.

This all applies to me as well. The 'tank controls' worked for me, as they were the most logical, consistent approach when combined with the cinematic fixed-but-constantly shifting camera angles in those games.

I'm not saying it should be Gears, but maybe Halo controls, or L4D, or even Dead Rising. Trying to control this game is like trying to send a text message with broken thumbs. I'll save my $60 Capcom, thanks for releasing the demo.

Yeah the "But, but, but, it's Reeeeesident Eeeeeviiiiil! So you shouldn't move and shoot" line of thinking is BULLSHIT and a cop out. Hey, how about letting the player choose whether or not they can move while shooting?
It seems like a cop out to me too. If that was there justification, why didn't they just make it more difficult to aim while moving, have the gun bounce around alot more if you are trying to move and shoot? They could have pleased both lines of thinking, adding a more immersive physical element to the action and increasing the tension during frantic moments of survival.

I hate the new inventory system, its bullshit if you run out of ammo you cant really switch weapons or look around at stuff, where as in RE4> the inventory paused the game. PS - knife needs to do more damage... still!

Re: Resident Evil 5

I just realized there's a level of hypocrisy with the people who are defending the controls by saying "it's Resident Evil!" yet not complaining about the inventory system, which is totally NOT Resident Evil.

Anyway, I played the first stage a bit more tonight. Finally finished it. The second stage on the other hand was much more annoying. The chainsaw guy got me with his stupid one-hit kill like 3 times before I gave up. One-hit kills and lack of maneuverability don't make for a very fun game.

Hopefully Capcom realizes how much they've fucked up and patch the game to allow you to at least move and shoot at the same time.

Re: Resident Evil 5

Resident Evil 2 is one of my favorite games to have ever played. Resident Evil 4 on Wii has gotten more play than just about all other Wii games I own combined. With that said, I won't be buying Resident Evil 5 anytime in the near future. I HATE the whole "partner through the whole game" aspect, having a "real time" inventory screen, and the screen just doesn't seem to let me see enough at any given time. So very disappointing .

Re: Resident Evil 5

i will bet 1 billion dollars that all these people bitchin about RE5 not being able to run and shoot will get what they want. youll be able to run and shoot, but heres the bet... the majority wont do it because of the limited ammo in the game and the waste to your ammo reserves cause youll be shottin and not hittin anything. no one complained about not being able to move and shoot in RE4, so i have no idea why everyones complaining now - RE5 to me looks like the same exact game as RE4, except in a different setting with different main characters

Re: Resident Evil 5

I think what's hurting this game is the way they're forcing the concessions made to the co-op gameplay onto the single-player game. A real-time inventory makes sense for co-op gameplay, as it would suck if one player is forced to pause as another player goes into their inventory.

But it's just plain lazy programming that forces this element, unnecessarily, onto the single-player game.

It seems like the main thrust of this game is pure co-op and I, for one, will never play this game with another person in co-op, so I don't think this game's for me.

I found the second stage much easier. I haven't been able to pass the first one yet.

In RE4 I was able to make my stand and then pick everybody off as they tried to get to me. Even when the girl was following me around, she pretty much stayed out of the way.

In RE5 I keep having to move to help or revive my partner. It requires a completely different approach to playing.

Uhm...how do you figure? I seriously doubt Capcom will make that change anytime soon.

Re: Resident Evil 5

I finally got around to playing this demo, and it was absolutely NO FUN AT ALL...for a whole variety of reasons.

Controls: worse than RE4 on GC/PS2.
Real time + resident evil inventory = terrible combo
The coop partner: annoying and in the way (at least Ashley would duck)

All things being equal, I'd rather just play RE4 again on the Wii, and the only way I would EVER play this is if it's ported down to the Wii. Controls on that were AMAZING.

Re: Resident Evil 5

So you have to play the whole game with the partner character? Screw that - RE is all about creeping around by yourself and the feeling of isolation and looming dread.

Oh well, couldn't check out much of the demo cause it crashed my PS3 at the first load screen anyway. Don't think I'll bother again.

If it does i'm praying that they make the co op optional! I'm sure it wouldnt be too hard in making that change.

Re: Resident Evil 5

That's not even the worst part, if your partner dies the game is over.

Re: Resident Evil 5

Okay, I guess I should chime in too...

After playing the demo quite a bit, I really don't have a big problem with RE5, and forced co-op aside, it feels just like RE4. I used the default controls and upped the aiming sensitivity, and it controlled just fine, and I didn't even notice not being able to move and shoot, because I didn't really need to do so.

My only problem, like I said, is the co-op gameplay that forces itself into the single-player game:
- real-time/shared inventory (which is my biggest complaint)
- and game over when partner dies
This shit is inexcusable, but at least they are fixable with a patch (and might be fixed in the final game).

My only other complaint is just a minor quibble that's easily patched too, and that's the camera that's a little too close to your character.

Those complaints aside, I had a lot of fun with the demo, and will probably pick up the game.

Re: Resident Evil 5

I guess I'm one of the few who had a lot of fun playing the demo. Granted, I played through it co-op (which I intend to do through the entire game as well), but the inventory system didn't really bother me. Is everyone here who dislikes it aware that you can hot-key four items to your D-pad? I agree though that if you're playing single player, it should pause at the inventory screen.

Re: Resident Evil 5

Tried the demo some more Friday night. When there is not a lot of zombie chaos going on around you, the controls are more or less ok. Once the shit starts to get crazy though, I find myself mashing buttons like crazy as both Chris and Sheva continue to get pounded, until one of us (usually Sheva) get pounded into the ground by the bad-ass Executioner. That being said, I'm not getting the hang of the controls like I hoped I would (never been a hardcore RE fan) ... so I'm starting to think that the $70 credit I have at EB games (that I was going to use for RE5) will be going to something else (like Fallout 3) instead ...

Yeah, it was mentioned earlier in here but there seems to be someone who disagrees with the comment.

A different Capcom rep refutes this.

What sucks is the zombies seem to pause right when they get near you. Kinda like they are waiting for you to kill them first. We all know "real" zombies don't act that way.

They aren't zombies, people! They're ganados (or something similar).
