Does anyone have a breakdown of what the different Upscale options mean? I downloaded it late last night so I didn't have time to play with it much. I was expecting it to just have a resolution selection. The one that's labeled double pixel or something like that...is that the one that will upscale to whatever resolution the PS3 is set to?

I only tested out PS1 and PS2, but there was a noticeable improvement. I tried out Disgaea and Castlevania: SotN and liked the effect with the smoothing. It may depend on the TV, but on my Rear Projection LCD the image was much easier on the eyes.
I'm just glad I can start a game now on the PS3 and finish it later on the PS2 if needed.

stupid question but does anyone else experience slow updates to the PS Store? I have been waiting for Rampage to pop up for I think a week now since I read about other people already having it for that long. my last store update was on 5/10 while others report 5/17.

That's strange. Rampage has been available for me for a while now. At least a week.
Has anyone in the Warhawk beta checked to see if the game is downloadable today?

Warhawk may have been pushed back until tomorrow for the US....not sure though. I am in though
The FW 1.80 seems nice...upconversion for DVD now and everything is nice. I may pick up some PS2 games that I never played. Also, this is driving me to buy a new TV, since my PS3 is on another TV (26" LCD HDMI) while the 360 is on my 55" RPTV (Component only).
I'll eventually get a 1080p TV and move everything to one and possibly get rid of my old "normal" DVD player since it does not upconvert. I like all this progress and updates...good job.
Now, if Sony would just give us DEMOS of their "arcade" games....they would be starting to catch MS.

Yes it is. Here's a full list of what it updated.
*Full 1080p upscaling for DVDs, PS2 and PS1 games. With upscaling, there's no need to throw away your old DVDs and PlayStation 2 games. The content will be converted to resolutions as high as 1080p, and will breathe new visual life into your old discs. DVD movies can only be upconverted using an HDMI connection.
*PSP Remote Play via internet. Although this feature was supposedly included in a previous update, many were unable to have it properly run. This hopefully corrected feature will allow PSP users to watch and listen to content stored on the PS3 from any wi-fi connection in the world. PSP firmware 3.50 will be required.
*DLNA media center connectivity. Media content stored on DLNA-enabled PCs and laptops can be shared and viewed on PS3 systems.
*Print photos with Epson printers. Images stored on the PS3 hard drive can be printed using compatible printers.
*Transfer PS1/2 save files from PS3 using Memory Card Adaptor. Previously, users could only transfer save files to the PS3. Now, gamers will be able to transfer data to and from the PS3.

It looks like the double option changes 480p material to 960p and windowboxes it. Full Screen streches 4:3 material to 16:9. So, most of us will want to keep the setting on normal.

This is the greatest update ever for the PS3 (to me) for one reason alone. I can finally play my PS2 games using the HDMI connection! Previously, I could only get audio and no sound when using anything other than a BD movie or PS3 game, but now that all seems to have been fixed. As an odd side note, the games look better without upconversion than they do with. Sharper and less blurry. Very odd.

I really can't wait to test this all out fully when I get out of work today.
Some are comparing the new DVD quality to the Denon 3930CI (a $1500 player) and also saying that the PS3 is now easily the best Blu-ray player on the market.
This was a major group of updates and is apparently an AV geeks dream.
The only downside I'm hearing is the Cell has to do all the work for this upscaling so expect more fan noise on PS1/2 games and DVDs. Honestly, the fan on the PS3 has never bothered me even on Blu-ray movies.

Yeah, it will upconvert to 720p or 1080i/p, whichever you have set in the display settings. I put it on normal so it won't stretch 4:3 content.

Just started the Beta download. I have to leave for work in about 40 minutes...we'll see how far it gets. The download is smaller than I expected but I never get good download speeds on the PS3.

I know that shortly after the PS3's launch, people were having problems outputting video over HDMI and audio over optical at the same time, but does anyone know if that has been resolved with any of the firmware updates? My audio receiver has no HDMI inputs, so I want to run HDMI to the TV and optical to the receiver in order to watch upscaled DVDs, but I figured I'd ask here before placing an order for an HDMI cable to make sure this setup would work.
Edit: Another question: what is the difference between these two HDMI cables?

I see that the pricier one is "24 AWG" and the cheaper one is "28 AWG", but I have no idea what that means. Also, the pricier one is "CL2 rated" with "net jacket" and the cheaper one has ferrite cores. Again, I have no clue what any of this means in terms of image quality. Basically, is it worth the extra ten bucks to get the more expensive cable?

The net jacket is just an outer sleeve on the length of the wire to protect the wire and make it easier to pull through tight spaces, like going through a wall.
