It is. They are reviving @midnight which is much cheaper to produce and likely to get the same exact ratings.

I doubt any late night hosts will ever be replaced once they step down. We don't need 5 different talk shows at night no one watches

Fuck! Now it will be an even longer wait for the final season. I support the strike, but goddammit.

Evil season 4's production was shut down and it doesn't sound like they will be resuming filming. It doesn't say how many episodes they have in the can.

They have had the late night format for decades and don't see why they would stop since those shows and they might be the only things the networks can rely on for ratings and buzz and it helps promote shows on those networks.

Maybe Kimmel would be the next guy to walk away in a couple of years?

I assume it will not all be white guys hosting late night shows in the future and maybe more minorities and women to keep it fresh.

CBS said they are done with the late late show with any host as it is impossible to make the money they need with that format at that hour.

Work stoppage/business continuity coverage is per production. Similar to what happened during covid.

NBC already tried it with Lilly Singh and that bombed enough that NBC didn't even bother replacing it...

Wasn't Singh on at 1:30 am? CBS is talking about no 12:30 am for the talk show format so no alternate replacement talk show host for James Corden. That's why they are going for the cheaper @midnight show format,

re: Writers Strike 2023

Yes and now there are no NBC late night shows or programming at 1:30am.

Too bad Carson Daly had a lot of smaller and indie bands in that hour and Costas had a great interview show in the 80's and early 90's.

That would be sad if 12:30am is now a dead spot but Seth Meyers is doing ok and I think he was winning the ratings war with Corden.

I really like Seth's show despite not being a big fan of how political late night has gotten. He also has bands I like and his interviews seem way more casual than most.

They were discussing what to do with his show though late last year, from Peacock to MSNBC to making it a 30 minute program, so I don't think he's safe. His Closer Look segments get a million plus views on YouTube within 24 hours of posting which is also factoring in.

Si I was thinking: this year is so unlike 2007, both with all the streamers, and the fact that this happened at the end of the TV and Emmy season. Not to mention how these negotiations and potential concessions will have a direct effect on upcoming DGA and SAG deals. How long could this go on before the networks feel literally any pressure to settle?

Networks sooner than streamers.

Networks film stuff soon for release in Fall. Streamers film shit now for release in a year. Streamers are way better positioned for a lengthy strike than networks are..

I thought he would always be safe since there has always been a late night show in that NBC slot since Letterman.

Maybe if he wants to expand and do more TV I get it but I don't think that would be the end of Late Night with Seth Meyers and the 2024 election is coming.

Hell, even way before Letterman, if you include The Tomorrrow Show with Tom Snyder (although not a traditional late night talk show with an audience, etc.)

Now I'm wondering what else would make more money? Or is it just the money they pay the host/staff is really high?

Costs are around the same, but ad revenue is only 40% of what it was just a handful of years ago.
Ex: If your boss cut 60% of your salary, but you spend the same $ every day as before, you'll be in trouble real quick.

Here's a helpful article on late night's decline

re: Writers Strike 2023

So reading that article it is the high cost of the hosts (who are locked into contracts) among other things and they are replacing Cordon with a gameshow. I guess internet/youtube interview shows have been a decent replacement but for a channel like ABC, who shamelessly hocks everything Disney on Kimmel and American Idol and others, I wonder how much they consider that kind of reach/advertising.

David Simon says that HBO has suspended his deal because he’s striking. I think this means that they will officially stop paying him any compensation.

Is he working? If the answer is NO, what’s the problem?

OTOH, if NBC cuts an hour of primetime, the late shows might move on up
so 12:30am might be gone as well

I don't think the HBO deal is only for when he's "actively working," but covers a much broader description, including time he's not working on a particular project, likely including some level of exclusivity or at least right of first refusal.
