Hopefully the wins were big enough this time, and the studios learned their lesson, so that a strike won't be necessary next contract renegotiation.

So much for that, doesn't look like it'll end any time soon...

Is there any reason that CBS can't get the new @Midnight show up and running now to fill the Corden slot? Writers are able to work on it and presumably performers would be able to appear on it in the same way that SNL cast members are allowed to perform on there.

According this this article from June, they were still looking for a showrunner, a host, and deciding on the "format" of the show when the strike happened.

https://deadline.com/2023/06/cbs-geo...on-1235416719/
Cheeks said that they were close to finding a showrunner and a head writer before the strike and is still hopeful that they’ll score the talent that they’re keen on. However, he said that they didn’t prioritize a host, because they wanted to lean into the format element of the show, which was previously hosted by Chris Hardwick.

“Let’s spend all our time talking about what the format should be, how we’re going to reimagine it, how we conceive it, and then we’ll optimally decide who’s the best talent that fits,” he said.
So it doesn't sound like they were just sitting on a show ready to go, but are still developing it. I don't know why the the format has to be 'reimagined." Why'd you pick up an existing show with an existing format if you're just going to fuck with it?

You can’t just make up a talk show and throw it on the air. It has to be developed and you have to find the right talent, hire staff and then test it.

As I've mentioned before, I was a producer and then ultimately an executive producer for a local daytime talk show and helped develop it before it launched. With a fraction of the budget, staff and viewership of a national show, it still took years from initial concept to our premiere to bring it together. And it was based on an old show that was also produced at our same station.

Well, I doubt CBS wants to take years to get the new @ Midnight on the air. Also, there is something to be said about bigger budgets and staff able to get things done faster. But it's still a lot of moving parts.

But does anyone here really feel like they need this show on the air right now? Like, I still have a backlog of stuff to watch even with the 5 month strike.

BTW, talking about talk shows that went poorly reminds me of the Australian show Get Krack!n:

Consequences of a long strike. Some staff writers for Superman and Lois and All American Homecoming were let go.

Well it was going on for a long time when he posted that. But it lasted another month after the WGA strike was settled, not another week.
