As if this show wasn't awesome enough already, two fantastic writers join the crew. This is great news. I have even more great news. According to tvshowsondvd.com, the first season of The Wire hits DVD on April 27 ! I hope I get it as a birthday present.

This isn't completely related, and this did happen ten days ago, but I just saw it today.

The Wire co-creator Robert Colesberry died on Feb 13

My condolences to his family.

Does anyone know anything else about this release? It's not listed for pre-order at DDD, DVD Empire, MU or Amazon.

It's also not listed at the HBO official site, which has a The Wire merchandise page.

Any news or info?

I haven't heard anything concrete about the DVD set since I found that article back in January. I think it's safe to assume that it isn't coming in April, or we would have heard something by now. Maybe HBO is waiting until the start of the 3rd season to release the DVD, or maybe the guy that sent that notice to TVShowsOnDVD was making the whole thing up all along. I really do hope HBO confirms the DVD release sometime soon.

I am so happy to have it on DVD I wish they would put season 1 and 2 out at the same time. Such a great show.

The Wire - Returns Sept 19

The Wire, the best show on television, topped by none, returns on September 19. This HBO press release gives lots of great information on what's to come in the third season:

HBO Press Release

Season three of THE WIRE will examine the concept and nature of reform and the role of the political leadership in addressing a city's problems. Earlier themes included the death of the American working class, depicted in season two, and the inherent conflict between individuals and the modern institutions to which they are beholden, as seen in the protracted drug investigation that began in season one and continues into the coming season.
New cast regulars this season include Chad L. Coleman ("Brother to Brother") as Dennis "Cutty" Wise, a recently paroled felon returning to a drug culture that has changed dramatically; Robert Wisdom ("Barber Shop 2: Back in Business") as Major Howard "Bunny" Colvin, a police boss frustrated with the futility of the drug war and willing to try something new; Aidan Gillen ("Shanghai Knights") as Councilman Thomas Carcetti, an ambitious and charismatic city councilman on the the rise; Jamie Hector (HBO's "Everyday People") as Marlo, a young street dealer protecting his turf from the encroaching Barksdale crew; Glynn Turman ("The Bernie Mac Show") as incumbent Mayor Clarence Royce, whose grip on municipal power seems assured, despite rising crime rates; and Isiah Whitlock ("Pieces of April") as Senator R. Clayton Davis, returning in his role as state Senator Clay Davis, a politician with surprising connections, not all of them legitimate.

Please don't take this as a threadcrap....just needed to post my recent experience with this series (since I recently mentioned I was going to check it out back in the Emmy thread) somewhere and this now seems like a logical place......

Well I finally got around to watching the first 6 episodes of this series on On Demand, and while I certainly can recognize the strong acting and realism displayed, I just found the series too heavy and a little slow for my taste.

I kind of figured you would. You're wrong, of course, but I had a feeling you wouldn't go for it.

I can't wait for the return of this. The way they worked everything around for the 2nd season was fantastic, and I'm really looking forward to seeing what they do this time.

At least with this one, I can see some elements in it that could contribute to a best-show-on-tv opinion, unlike that other HBO show.

So are most of the regulars (police) coming back for the 3rd season?

Here's my plan:
Currently archiving S2 on TiVo.
Will begin archiving S3 on TiVo.
Will Netflix S1 when released in October.
Will burn thru S2 and catch up to current by the end of the year.
Good plan, huh?

I just did the same thing with Six Feet Under, waited for S2 while archiving S3 and S4. Catching up now!

I'm in the same boat as you (just catching the first season On Demand after all the hype) and I'm loving the hell out of it. I'm from Baltimore and while it's not the best light shown on my hometown I'll be damned if it isn't true to life (much like "The Corner"). I don't know how Simon makes his characters so real, but I know those dudes. I've met a Stringer(my favorite character btw). I've met a Bubbles, Bodie, Wee-Bey, and D'angelo. FYI - I don't run around in drug circles, I used to work at a liquor store in the city where one rubs elbows with these kind of folks on a regular basis. Anyways this show is incredible and is by far my favorite HBO show. I'm hooked. Now if only On Demand would stop being stupid and give me some more episodes damn it!

The single best show currently on American TV and second only to Homicide: Life on the Streets overall, in my strongly held opinion.

Glynn Turman is a personal god to me, so that will be excellent.

Looking forward to the contributions of Richard Price, one of the best novelists working in English today.

And also looking forward to the first season on DVD, being released (I believe) sometime before the Second Coming.

For now it is...

It's been sort of like a carrot dangling in front of my nose.
