The Wire on HBO --- Discussion Thread

Has anybody heard anything on this new series.

It looks to be an urban crima drama.

It premieres on June 2 after the season finale of
"Six Feet Under".

Copenhagen 05-27-02 12:25 PM

I've just seen the previews for it an dfrom what I saw I'm anticipating its debut.

While I've seen some ads for this show and am looking forward to it, you could say "HBO's <I>Insert Show Here</I>" and I'd watch. Perhaps this will be another in a long list of Sunday night HBO programming that puts 99% of network shows to shame.

 That's what I'm hoping for... it looks to be more like regular network fare than Six Feet Under or The Sopranos (my favorite two shows by far), but with HBO producing it, I'm definitely looking forward to it! Here's hoping it'll come close to the quality of those two!

I was an extra on the third episode.

It's an urban crime drama revolving around the use of (surprise) wiring informants, wiretapping phones, etc.

I think most of the episodes were filmed in Baltimore. I know the one I'm in (June 16th, I think) was.

Ep 3...

OK in the second episode....when that one guy is running from that other guy (you know the one with the eye patch) where was he hiding all that time? ;}

Did anyone else think The Wire was craptacular?

I'm all for gritty realism and free speech, but they couldn't go 1 scene without saying the F Word 20 times. The writing is just terrible. I don't mind it at all in the Sopranos, but this show takes it to the extreme.

The Sheild owns this show, hands down. I won't be watching next week.

Didn't see The Wire (though I plan to monday night), but based on the comment above, it doesn't sound to promising... anyone else?

I thought that The Wire was actually pretty decent. I won't go into details since I would no doubt spoil some of it for you, but the hour that I watched was interesting enough for me to tune in next week.

Maybe I'm more into it since I live right outside of Baltimore...

Things to consider:

- It's from the writer/producer of <I>The Corner</I>, an incredible mini-series that cleaned house, most notably winning a Peabody.
- It's on HBO ...
- ... on Sunday nights

It appeared from this premiere that <I>The Wire</I> isn't going to knock you down with "gritty" realism or "shocking" realism, just realism. This episode set the stage for numerous interesting storylines, and while I didn't think it was anything spectacular, I am interested in seeing where it goes and how it develops.

The Wire 6/2/02

I know nothing about "The Wire" but I'm tired of it being lumped in the Six Feet Under thread. So please post your thoughts on "The Wire" in this thread. Thanks. :)

das Monkey 06-03-02 09:37 AM

My thoughts are already in the <I>Six Feet Under/The Wire</I> combo-thread. Enjoy if you care.

The first episode of "The Wire" was disappointing. I'll give it another episode or two before jumping ship.

As for "Six Feet Under", I think the show could go on just fine without
Spoiler:
Brenda.

Why in the world are these 2 shows combined into one thread? It doesn't make any sense.

You're really hung up on this, aren't you? ;) It doesn't change the fact that you're right, though. :D

I TiVo'd this last night. My cousin wrote episode number eight so definitely check it out.

I gave my thoughts in the other thread, as well...Storyline wise, I think:

Spoiler:

the younger Barksdale is going to be the downfall of his "untouchable" uncle. Sure, he's scum because he's a drug dealer, but his heart doesn't seem to be in it as far as the other aspects of the drug trade are concerned.

I was suprised to see so many "Oz" veterans...it was like a reunion of dead characters!

Geofferson 06-03-02 11:44 AM

I thought it had some promising elements. I'll watch the next couple to see if I get hooked or not.

Frank TJ Mackey 06-03-02 07:35 PM

my T-120 tape ran out after 2 hours and The Wire ran a bit long.

Could someone please tell me what happened, I guess, in the last two or three minutes.

THANK YOU

Does anyone know if all the filming takes place in Baltimore.

If I'm not mistaken, I've actually been down buy the low rises that were filmed.

There's a great bar down that way.

I watched the re-run tuesday night...it will now be a weekly watch.

Yeah, they do shoot the whole thing in Baltimore. They actually shoot all the police station interiors in a building directly across the plaza from my office building on Fayette street. It was actually very distracting, looking over the shoulders of the narcotics detectives to see my building -- I had the same distraction with Homicide, but I didn't mind because the writing was amazing. I'll give The Wire a chance, but I don't expect it to be The Shield either -- that show is amazing.

Those low rises do exist in a genuinely awful neighborhood, but the high rises were imploded years ago (Clark Johnson's character had a storyline about that in a Homicide episode, I think) and what you see towering in the background are CGI.

I just watched the rerun of the second episode. I liked it a lot. Anyone else watching?

bdshort 06-11-02 12:06 AM

Aw crap I forgot about the replay. Can anyone fill me in?

das Monkey 06-11-02 01:34 AM

Watched it. Liked it. It's very slowly developing, but I'm enjoying it.
