Just thinking about it they could have filmed another ending to season two just in case where he gets back and that basically would have wrapped it up well enough.

Really depends on the show for me. There are many where I am good with ten to thirteen episodes while a show that is only half an hour like X-Men could have twenty. The original run was 13,13,...
