That'll kill the show. I have to assume the swap to Abby has already turned some show watchers off. Waiting another two years to have her character be the lead will turn this to a dud. If I were only a show watcher, why would want to come back years later to see back story for her?
That being said, if the show only plans to follow the two games, I guess it doesn't matter. Season 3 will be the end regardless.

I don't see it as antagonistic . . . I see it as unnecessary. Not unnecessary for her to speak out, unnecessary since we are two freaking years away.

‘Last of Us’ Season 3 Casts Jason Ritter and Patrick Wilson, Promotes Three Cast Members to Series Regulars
“The Last of Us” Season 3 has cast both Jason Ritter and Patrick Wilson in recurring roles, Variety has confirmed.
In addition, Ariela Barer, Tati Gabrielle, and Spencer Lord have all been promoted to series regular status for the show’s third season. The trio first joined the show in Season 2 in the roles of Mel, Nora and Owen respectively.
Ritter will play Hanley, who is described as a WLF soldier. Wilson, meanwhile, will play Jerry, father to main character Abby (Kaitlyn Dever).
These are the latest new additions to the cast of Season 3, with previously announced new cast members Clea Duvall and Jorge Lendeborg Jr., with the latter taking over the role of Manny. Returning cast includes Dever, Bella Ramsey, Isabella Merced, Gabriel Luna, and Jeffrey Wright.
