There is no "opinion" when it comes to sales figures and profitability. If (total # of units sold) is less than (the amount it cost to produce and market the units) then (the studio has lost money)....

I'd be curious to know what the "expected" sales were for both releases. Regardless, I think what's happened is a combination of DVD sales hitting a plateu and the market just being really flooded...
