I believe David had knee surgery during the 5th season or at least had a knee injury which helped contribute to the weight gain.

Not every episode needs to move plot along or have stuff happen IMO. I get sucked in by the character work, acting, and writing. I would watch Rhea read a phone book so that is part of it too.

I saw a screener of the pilot months ago with temp music and some unfinished effects. Not a lot of chemistry between the leads but maybe with better editing and the rest of the series it gets better.
