American Born Chinese (Disney +) -- S: Michelle Yeoh, Ke Huy Quan, Ben Wang -- Premieres 5/24/23
Based on the graphic novel of the same name by Gene Luen Yang, "American Born Chinese" tells the story of Jin Wang, an average teenager juggling his high school social life with his home life. When he meets a new foreign student on the first day of the school year, even more worlds collide as Jin is unwittingly entangled in a battle of Chinese mythological gods.
The coming-of-age adventure features an all-star international cast, including Academy(R) Award-Nominees and Golden Globe winners Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan ("Everything Everywhere All at Once"), Ben Wang ("Chang Can Dunk"), two-time International Emmy Award nominee Yeo Yann Yann ("Wet Season"), Chin Han ("Mortal Kombat"), Daniel Wu ("Reminiscence"), former Taekwondo champion Jimmy Liu and Sydney Taylor ("Just Add Magic"). Academy(R) Award nominee Stephanie Hsu ("Everything Everywhere All at Once") guest stars.
Emmy(R) Award-winning writer/producer Kelvin Yu ("Bob's Burgers," "Central Park") serves as executive producer and showrunner. Destin Daniel Cretton (Marvel's "Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings," "Short Term 12") is set to direct and serves as executive producer, alongside Melvin Mar and Jake Kasdan (both of "Doogie Kamealoha, M.D.," "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" and "Jumanji: The Next Level"), Erin O'Malley ("Doogie Kamealoha, M.D."), Asher Goldstein ("Short Term 12," "Just Mercy") and Gene Luen Yang.

I went to D23 last September and this show was being promoted then.
The lead of this show is actually a young man named Ben Wang, who is pretty unknown

Destin Daniel Cretton, who directed Shang-Chi, directed the Pilot episode and is a producer on this series.

This looks like it should be a fun watch, and while they are not even close to being the same, this thread reminded me of one of the better DCOM movies that came out quite a few years back called Wendy Wu: Homecoming Warrior that stars Brenda Song. If time permits, I might end up watching Wendy Wu again this weekend on Disney+.

Yeah looks like it could be a fun family fantasy show.

All episodes of this will be up tomorrow. All the reviews I've seen have been positive.

Only watched the first episode (and because they dumped it all at once I'm probably noping out of this thread for a bit until I finish) but we liked it a lot. Honestly we'd probably watch it even without the fantasy setting (or if the fantasy setting was just a dream/hallucination).
IIRC in the graphic novel Jin is the new kid so they changed some things up, and I'm curious how they flesh out the story.
I'm Asian but I've always lived in places that are predominantly Asian (or with large Asian communities), so neither my kids nor I have had to put up with stuff like that in school, at least, but it's still super relatable.
Also found it funny that for credits in that initial blurb Jimmy Liu is "former Taekwando champion" is this like his first major part? I mean he's one of the main characters.

I am on the third or fourth episode already, having started my binge last night. This is a fun show to watch. I also love bits like Michelle Yeoh's character expressing delight at the all you can eat Chinese Buffet, as she really seems to be enjoying her time in this show.
It is always great when a top notch actress like Yeoh does not phone in their performance.
I think word of mouth might turn this into a show that slowly but surely builds a nice audience.

Oh my gosh. 4th episode was literally a sitcom set in Chinese heaven! Keep an eye out for James Hong.
Getting a lot of backstory from Journey to the West!
Drunken Sweet Caroline karaoke!
Michelle Yeoh’s goddess of compassion putting together her own IKEA furniture!
Ke Huy Quan as reoccurring 80s sitcom accident “What Could Go Wong?”
I'm likely finishing this series of episodes tonight!
This show is so charming and has completely sucked me in.

Completed earlier in the day, and this was a really enjoyable series that I hope gets another season. With Disney going through a cost cutting phase I hesitate to make any predictions regarding another season.

I watched the 1st 2 episodes. It's pretty good. Pretty breezy to get through. Ben Wang is the star. Yeoh has a small role so far and Quan has only appeared in a retro-TV show. I assume we'll see more of him. Wang has been good so far as well as the actor who plays Jin. Nice to see Daniel Wu here as well playing the Monkey King.
Definitely one of those awkward teen dramas that also has a Chinese fantasy element. Most in this forum only watch Disney + for Marvel or Star Wars, so I don't foresee a high amount of interest in this here.

Shoot, I'm afraid that if it doesn't get another season it'll eventually get removed from the service entirely...
