Right, but the question was whether it was determined to be fake. At this point, we'll have to wait for the movie.

Found an archive of the post, potential spoilers obviously - https://archive.is/AWGQQ

I was just thinking of it given Abob's speculation.

For the record, I haven't read anything. I also am not going to read any spoilers ... Was that theory already out there?

I hadn't encountered it before. You'll get the credit if it pans out.

I'm actually looking forward to this one. I'm a big Melissa McCarthy fan and so far I like the previews...

Yes, the alternate universe theory has been out there for a while. It's the only thing I think could make this movie palatable. It would also explain why the original actors appear in different roles.

Edit:

I went looking and found that Groucho posted the theory in March. There may have been other discussions out there too.

99.9% sure this won't happen, but I spoilerized it anyway.

Original Ghostbusters Director Says Reboot Backlash Isn’t About Women

“I think there’s way too much talk about gender [when it comes to this film],” he recently told Mashable. “I think that many of the people who were complaining were actually lovers of the [original] movie, not haters of women.”

The movie doesn't come out for another 2 weeks, and Target already has the toys on clearance.

Obviously there may be no correlation, but it is unusual. Means those toys were not selling.

Re: Ghostbusters (2016, D: Feig)

They started selling it too early. Honestly I don't get the point in that, unless it's an adaptation that has never had products release, what's the point in the action figures and toys months before any bit of fandom has built?

Hell last year most of the Force Awakens stuff around here was on clearance the weekend the movie opened, but that's in large part to how much they had and the fact they started selling it six months prior.

Those two things aren't mutually exclusive.

Yep. Kids don't even know who these characters are, and might not even know the franchise. Why would they want the toys?

Critics of the movie aren't being accused of a combination of sexism mixed with nostalgia.

These don't appear to be movie licensed toys, just stuff from the regular GB brand.

The action figure at the top is definitely tied to the new movie.

D'oh, you're right. Browsing on my phone. So much for that theory. Also, all but Slimer have that ugly stripe that are on the new suits.
