I posted this on another forum but...
I could be wrong, but that new one looks like from the same visual effects team that worked on Pixels.

I know it's beating a dead horse by this point, but my idea for the sequel would be to start the film with a statue dedication ceremony for Egon. His daughter (McKinnon could even play this) would be there, along with the other three GBs. It would be a nice, emotional tribute until there is a ghost attack. The remaining GBs take care of the problem, but Venkman says after that he's done.
Stantz and Zeddemore become management, and with new Spengler recruit a team because of increased paranormal activity. Maybe actors like Emma Stone, Bill Hader, Paul Rudd, etc. make up the new recruits. Whoever fans seem to accept better than the current cast.
Seems like a far better idea than what we got as it still connects to the old films.

Why couldn't McCarthy or Jones be scientists? Because they're loud?
Also, Jones isn't playing a scientist, unless the trailers are very misleading.

For the same reason Larry the Cable Guy can't be a scientist. The majority of their previous bodies of work is them being idiots, blue collar, or excessively abrasive and ignorant characters.

I could point to counter-casting decisions that worked out such as Michael Keaton as Batman ... but that isn't exactly the same since it was a genre change from his previous body of work. Yeah, I got nothing.
I am not familiar with these actresses as I haven't watched SNL in well over 20 years and have not seen anything but trailers for Melissa McCarthy movies. I'm not bagging on them for their past work ... they just don't grab my attention or interest. I will see this based on the Ghostbusters moniker alone.
That said, had you cast this a few decades ago and went with the likes of Chris Farley, Adam Sandler, Jim Carey, and Chris Rock ... I wouldn't have seen it even with the Ghostbusters moniker. I don't care for those comedians/actors at all. As I said, I am not familiar with the current cast, but from the trailers I can see the objections if you don't care for the style.

But I don't see funny comedic actresses playing to their strengths in this one. I see women who are miscast and take the audience out of the movie. Venkman may not have come across as a top notch scientist, but he came across as being of average or higher intelligence (noted by how he scams a lot of people), and the hustler of the group who brings in the money. I don't see anyone in this cast who has that quality, either.
Almost everything about this movie either looks like a trainwreck (the new ideas), or a pale, pathetic imitiation of the original (the old ideas). This just has massive fail written all over it.
But it didn't have to be that way...

The cast that made it into the film worked. They were all believable in their roles and everyone worked well with each other. Their styles meshed well. And none of them were obnoxiously loud and annoying as McCarthy or Jones.

Re: Ghostbusters (2016, D: Feig)
I think that if they had done a passing of the torch sequel things might have been differently received. The cast still may have been problematic (I'd get rid of Jones and McCarthy) but I think having the three original surviving cast members there in supporting roles as their original characters would have worked better.
Similar concept to Jurassic World, The Force Awakens, etc... a "repeat" of the original but still tieing in, acknowledging, and most importantly honouring the original. Done right.
Versus a total reboot/remake that I will never go see. Total Recall, RoboCop, Poltergeist, etc all movies I adore but have never watched the reboots of.

I will laugh tho if there is some incredibly smart, meta way that none of us are thinking about that somehow ties this into the original... but I doubt it. Also, Leslie Jones.

Moranis wasn't really loud and obnoxious. He was the dweeby guy trying to get with Sigourney Weaver and wanted to be popular. Plus he wasn't one of the main characters but a co-star.

Ah, I see. You are incapable of separating an actor from the roles they play. Not everyone has that problem, you know.

We clearly view someone being obnoxious in different ways. The ways we've seen Jones and McCarthy act in the trailers are far more obnoxious to me than Moranis acting like a dork trying to hit On Sigourney Weaver.

I think at least with McCarthy that she's pretty well fallen into being typecast in the loud, obnoxious type of role. So it is hard in her case to separate her as an actress versus her characters.

Well, when all you play are loud, obnoxious, annoying characters - and you do so in an annoying fashion - it is going to be extremely difficult to separate an entire body of work from a new character. Especially when that new character falls right into the same old same old for that actor/actress.
