I don't think it's gonna be that cut-and-dry. My guess: beaten by Pets but not humiliated, certified fresh on RT, strong overseas performance.

A more abstract prediction: in the big picture the misogynist man-baby-as-villain story is gonna win out. Even if you think it's a massive unjust smear campaign on the part of Sony and the filmmakers I think you'd be hard-pressed to deny that that picture was successfully painted, for better or worse.

Re: Ghostbusters (2016, D: Feig)

Well, I'm seeing it either Thursday night or (more likely) Friday morning.

Going in, I think it'll be an okay movie. It has huge shoes to fill and I don't expect it to come close. But that's the same expectation I give to any sequel/reboot. I'm willing to give the movie a chance.

Pretty sure there's going to be
  • "Told you so"s towards the marketing/cast.
  • Obsessive watching over of the RT score.
  • Analysis and debate as to how big a bomb it is, and arguments about who to blame/why it happened.
  • Reactions to the reactions of stars to the reception.
  • Nerd outrage over whatever roles the original actors play.
  • More Twitter bullshit.
  • Some ghost related memes about the movie being DOA.
  • Oldboy thread about predicting the 2nd weekend percentage decrease that will inevitably get locked.
  • Plus arguments among people who saw the movie with people bashing it who haven't, and all that usual shit.

And more. Judging by this thread alone, people aren't going to let this go so soon.

Re: Ghostbusters (2016, D: Feig)

Word is that Sony has moved the review embargo (at least the ones from "official" critics...not the geek above!) from Monday until after the film is released. That's not a good sign.

Re: Ghostbusters (2016, D: Feig)

I'm assuming you're talking about the debunked Midnight's Edge Facebook rumor from a few days ago. I don't see anything about any embargo changes on Twitter or Reddit and with only 18 hours to go I doubt it would be worth the trouble.

Re: Ghostbusters (2016, D: Feig)

The movie comes out in the UK on Monday, doesn't it? If that's the case, it'd be silly to have an embargo that goes beyond that. Plus, it's not like they didn't let press see the movie. They've all seen it. They just can't post reviews until (most likely) tomorrow.

Re: Ghostbusters (2016, D: Feig)

The facebook post about the embargo just said it was shifted from day to evening of the UK launch. I guess if it was debunked, all it means was a few hours difference, unless i'm misreading something.

Re: Ghostbusters (2016, D: Feig)

That was already posted a page or two back, though in fairness it was hidden in spoiler tags and not embedded.

A quick Facebook search re: the embargo shows several stories referring back to a rumor that is practically debunked (though we can't be sure what will happen in the next 17 hours) and posts that could be confusing UK time with US time.

Per critics that are actually subject to the embargo today it lifts tomorrow at 10am PST/1pm EST.

I kinda like it. It's the entire controversy in a nutshell.

Sorry...I searched a few pages back and didn't see it...guess I didn't go back far enough. It's gone.

No worries. Lots of discussion today... it was easy to miss, as Guru said. You could have left it up.

It's still there in #476 if anyone wants to see it.

The negative review has 600,000 views and 600 dislikes. The positive one has 800 views and 200 dislikes. What the fuck is wrong with people?

Re: Ghostbusters (2016, D: Feig)

In other news, I saw the clearance toys at Target today. If they had all four women, I'd probably have bought them, but the one I wanted the most (Holtzman) was out of stock, so I didn't want to get the others then go searching every Target for the last one. Their website says they're ALL out of stock, but they're obviously not, so it's impossible to track one down without visiting the stores or calling them. I don't have time for that shit.

Also, they had a ton of Finding Dory toys, and half of those were on clearance as well. Conspiracy!!!

The guy with the negative review already had well over 500k subscribers for his channel. The positive guy has 330. I know there's a backlash going on, but that easily explains the viewership numbers. The dislikes though, yeah they seem disproportionate for sure.

It's not the viewership numbers. The positive one was also uploaded several hours later too. It's the insane amount of dislikes. Roughly 1 dislike for every 4 views of one vs 1 dislike for every 1000 for the other.

If you really wanna stare madness in the face check out the comments on the positive review.

I edited my comment a moment ago, realized your point. Though that dude seems way too chipper either way.

The comments when they were first posted, the uploader responded very nicely to others, I'll give him that. But as you said, I bet things are pretty bad now, with more people commenting.

Well, at the rate this is going... we should count ourselves lucky it isn't a sequel. The only worse outcome (besides being a terrible film) would be for it to take the original characters and ruin them as well.

And this is based on what? If anything things are looking up after the last few days now that people have seen it.
