Zootopia, a non Pixar Disney animated movie, coming out of nowhere to make more money than the highly anticipated, highly marketed Batman vs. Superman, is just mind boggling.

Why would it be mind boggling? It got high critic and fan praise, and it's a family oriented movie. Two strikes against BvS. Makes perfect sense really.

I'm not knocking either film but before their releases, which would you have picked to made the most money? A film with Batman, Superman and Wonder Woman together onscreen for the first time or an animated Disney movie?

Looking at this week's crop, looks like CA will be #1 again this weekend. Predictions:
1 and 2 are a lock:
1. CA
2. Neighbors 2
3, 4, 5 will be tight with larger appeal Jungle Book (but heading into its 6th weekend) vs. Money Monster and newcomer The Nice Guys. Money Monster will have dropped off quite a bit and most of that money going to Nice Guys. So...
3. Nice Guys (~15mil)
4. Jungle Book (~12mil)
5. Money Monster (~11mil)
6. Zootopia (for a 3rd week in a row at #6)
I can't imagine The Darkness and Mother's day hanging around but their dropoff will disrupt the bottom 4.
7. Huntsman
8. The Darkness
9. Barbershop (predicting a leap from over Keanu)
10. Keanu or Mother's Day. Gun to my head, i'd say Keanu

given that, i'd say Angry Birds takes JB/zootopia money, so Money Monster jumps JB, and Zootopia drops further down.

3. Angry Birds
4. Nice Guys (~15mil)
5. Money Monster (~11mil)

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
ANGRY BIRDS is #1.
THE NICE GUYS comes in at a weak #4 ($11.3 million).
MONEY MONSTER has dropped to #6 with only $27 million accumulated so far.
Looks like big-star Hollywood vehicles don't find much favor with audiences anymore.

well, the kids came out and dragged their parents with them. where the hell was all the marketing for AB anyway? i'm guessing a steep drop for it next week.
gotta think about who's taking the top spot between XMen and Alice.

The marketing campaign was pretty extensive. They had a lot of tie-ins to NBA games.

Depends on a number of factors, but the vehicles have to look appealing enough to audiences. I think those two films are performing as well as could be expected. May is a pretty brutal month for these kind of films as well.

Two big boxoffice disappointments this weekend:

From Box Office Guru:
Looking at the nine-film mutant franchise that Fox has had over the past 16 years, Apocalypse had the sixth best opening weekend. In terms of actual tickets sold, it ranks seventh out of nine. The new PG-13 film sold approximately 25% fewer tickets on opening weekend than the first X-Men in July of 2000.
Reviews for the new mutant saga were not too strong and were a far cry from the raves received by DOFP. Also, movie fans have already spent over $1 billion on a trio of comic book movies this year so some may not have felt the need for a fourth one in under five months. Studio data showed that the audience was 62% male and 55% over 25. Despite five major roles for women in the cast, the female share of the crowd was relatively low. The CinemaScore grade was a good A-.

Johnny Depp's career met with another setback this weekend with the disastrous performance of his latest big-paycheck project Alice Through the Looking Glass which bowed to only $28.1M over three days, according to estimates. That represents a staggering 76% plunge from the opening weekend of 2010's Alice in Wonderland which was a monster 3D hit grossing over $1 billion globally prompting those involved to get another installment made. Audiences were not part of that discussion as consumer interest was never very high for this new chapter despite a pricey marketing push over the last several weeks.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
I don't think Memorial Weekend is a great weekend to launch films. As Deadline noted, you have holdovers from early May. A friend of mine who goes to the movies maybe 6 times a year wants to see Civil War or X-Men. He's not going to see both and there's only so many people who will see every superhero movie.
Since it's also the first weekend of the summer, people really want to enjoy it. Unless you love going to the movies, this is probably not the weekend you want to go and cancel a BBQ, beach, pool, or lake trip.
