Not really. I suggested we sticky it as a thread because at one point there was no box office thread for a long time. People are just not that interested in them I guess.

I keep forgetting it's stickied. I just don't check at the top of the page very often.

Yeah, I generally skip past the stickies in each forum so I generally forget about this thread too. Individual threads put them front and center.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

It looks like Independence Day: Resurgence is going to flop.

Finding Dory won the box office again for the second week.

The Shallows finished 4th. I guess Blake Lively is not dead yet as a movie star though she has the looks but not the charisma or acting chops and should probably stick to TV.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

It's whatever, the reason the others went away is because of scattered discussion (and general lack of discussion) on anything but the biggest opening weekends.

ID4R is low but not an all out flop by any stretch, Shallows impressed, Dory is impressive as hell. Central Intelligence held up well.

Neon Demon averaged a pitiful $775 per screen, I feel kind of bad for Amazon who seemed, at the very least, enthusiastic about it.

Swiss Army Man pulled $114k from 3 theaters for a $38k avg, not a Wes Anderson sized opening but pretty impressive no less.

Me Before You's $50m gross thus far is really impressive to me, mostly because it just doesn't appeal to me at all but they definitely found their market

ID4R is up to $143m worldwide, Central Intelligence is at $83m, The Conjuring 2 at $242.9m, Now You See Me 2 at $159.8m, X-men Apocalypse is at $523.8m, The Jungle Book is at $929.5m, Angry Birds is at $333m.

It's already made $143M with worldwide box office factored in.

Of course, there are those who will claim this needs to make like $900M to be "profitable"

I saw it, paid $10.50 to see it, thought it was a decent follow up.

$41M is a very light start and with future week drops factored in, it will probably barely get to $100M in the U.S. I think it will probably top off at $125-130 tops.

Warcraft, on the other hand, it definitely a domestic bomb. I did see it was doing well in China.

More then just doing well, Warcraft broke all sorts of records in China and did really well in other territories with over $368 million in foreign grosses so far and over $400 million worldwide now.

I'm happy that it will probably end up grossing more worldwide then most of the other big budget disappointments or bombs this year (Independence Day, TMNT, Alice, Gods of Egypt). It kind of ends up like Pacific Rim and Terminator Genisys the way the foreign take was so high.

Wow, Independence Day: Resurgence is going to fall hard week 2. Funny how it's actually 4th of July weekend and no one is going to see it other than a few die hard fans.

Through 7 days Independence Day: Resurgence is way behind the tally of the 1st movie.

But, that doesn't take into account 1996 money and how it was translate now.

It's looking like it will make most of it's money overseas and eventually on DVD/BD.

It hasn't even hit $100M yet domestically through 7 days.

Yeah, ID4:R is not doing well, at all. It'll be lucky to crack $100m at this point.

Did better than I would've thought too. I'd predict a huge drop next weekend but who knows.

Very impressive opening for the Secret Life of Pets (bettering Zootopia's opening weekend by nearly $30m), and a surprisingly solid hold for The Legend of Tarzan. I am curious to see how well Dory continues to hold moving forward, this being its largest single drop.

Central Intelligence is holding in there really well and Sultan (Bollywood) is kicking some ass at #10 (but averaging better per theater than #2 - #9 on the top 10). Sony has to be happy with how The Shallows performed

^ It grossed $3.4m on Thursday, which tells us nothing in this case, but $40m+ is respectable, it'll mostly depend on if it has legs or not.

Box Office: 'Ghostbusters' Wins Friday But Ain't No Monster

Thirty-two years after the original film became a massive box-office hit, Paul Feig's Ghostbusters is finally rolling out in theaters after months of debate over the filmmaker's decision to cast female leads.

The big-budget reboot — arguably the most talked-about film of summer — won the Friday box-office race in North America with an estimated $17.2 million from 3,962 locations but on Saturday will be overtaken by holdover The Secret Life of Pets, which is expected to earn $50 million for the weekend as it races past the $200 million mark domestically.

Conversely, Ghostbusters is looking at $43 million-$44 million, a less-than-spectacular opening considering the movie's $144 million net budget (rebates and tax incentives brought it down from $154 million). Sony is being more bullish in projecting $46.5 million.

Either way, Ghostbusters will be the biggest domestic opening ever for Feig and his frequent collaborator, Melissa McCarthy, but it's also their first franchise tentpole. Their current best is The Heat, which debuted to $39.1 million.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

I love the "spin" the studio is trying to put on Ghostbusters opening weekend (and many in the press are going along). Since it's not opening huge, they're going with labelling it as Melissa McCarthy's and Paul Feig's biggest opening ever - as if that were some huge hurdle to achieve.

Bottom line is that this movie cost about as much as Independence Day Resurgence and it's going to make about as much domestically. Except Independence Day got the "bomb" label slapped on it by the media, and Ghostbusters is going to get the "moderate hit" label slapped on it. They're BOTH huge disappointments. And there's no way Ghostbusters is going to do as well overseas as Independence Day has been, which means it's wordwide take is almost certainly going to be less.

And that $144 million figure is a joke...we all know with marketing and promotion costs, Sony sunk close to $400 million into this reboot. Feig himself has said the movie needs to clear $500 million worldwide for a sequel to be greenlit.

$144m is the production cost, it's probably close to $200m after Marketing/Promotions costs, but the Prints part of P&A has gone down substantially over the years so at least that's worth noting.

$500m going by the multiple of 3 rule would place the budget at $166m. Also, I don't think it was Sony that said it's Feig's highest, I don't think they give a shit, they're busier setting what the expectations were (coming into today, they were estimating $44m - $46m), sites like Hollywood Reporter and Deadline have more of a story if this movie is a big hit or a massive flop, middle of the road like this doesn't give them much to work with.

Regardless, it has a long way to go to be considered a success and it doesn't have China to lean on like many other big budget movies do (ID4:R, Warcraft, etc; )
