Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Alice I'm not at all surprised by. The first Alice was coming off the performance of Burton's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory which was a fun way for audiences to get into a very imaginative, interesting world.

This second one? No one really asked for it. Depp's making headlines for the wrong reasons (although to a lesser extent than, say, Holmes-era Tom Cruise). And Disney is, I'm guessing, putting its weight behind Jungle Book and especially The BFG. Alice premiered in London during Cannes. BFG premiered at Cannes. (I don't blame them, I would give Spielberg preference too).

The Jungle Book has made more money than Batman vs. Superman.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

Never really thought about how successful Zootopia is as an original movie.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/scottmen.../#1e527cb829ac

And now it’s on the cusp of crossing the $1 billion mark worldwide. With $991 million worldwide, it’s the fourth-biggest animated film ever behind Toy Story 3 ($1.063b), Minions ($1.159b), and Frozen ($1.276b). It is the sixth-biggest “non-sequel/prequel” of all time, behind Alice in Wonderland ($1.025b), Jurassic Park ($1.029b, including the 2013 3D reissue), Frozen ($1.27b), Titanic ($2.186b), and Avatar ($2. 787b). It is Walt Disney’s eleventh-biggest movie ever globally.

Oh, and it is the second-biggest “original” movie ever released (not accounting for inflation) behind only James Cameron’s Avatar. Zootopia was not based on a television show, a comic book, a novel, or a stage play. It was not a sequel, prequel, or reboot from an existing franchise. It is not based on an actual historical event. It was an entirely original concoction.
Not like these little factoids mean that much (assuming it's accurate), just kind of neat

It's pretty impressive that Disney has managed to completely change gears in their animation department (from telling "classic" tales of sorts into much more modern fare) and succeed as well as it has.

I'm glad Nice Guys will make at least $30m. Zootopia crossed $1b worldwide and is the 2nd movie of 2016 to do so (behind Captain America: Civil War).

Warcraft has made $70M overseas so far, it is expected to make $100M- $150M in China later this week.

People (outside of this forum) just found something enjoyable to watch more than once. Look at popular tv shows like Friends and Seinfeld. Same characters just doing something a little different each week. For years. People loved that shit.

I wasn't commenting on people enjoying it (but I will now, they're wrong); I was just amazed that it was categorized as original in the linked article and records.

Studio-reported box office figures are still being filed, but Warner Bros. has announced that Conjuring 2 will post a $40.35M opening, which is off an amazing 4% from the New Line original’s opening of $41.9M.
Universal is reporting $24.4M for Duncan Jones’ Warcraft in second place. This is where the studio figured the humans versus orcs brawl story would come in B.O. wise, and the bigger play for this $160M production +$110M P&A vehicle is overseas. We’ll have those box office figures soon. CinemaScore sees the final endgame for this videogame adaptation between $57M-$81M.

Lionsgate sees Now You See Me 2 at $23M. In relation to its 2013 edition, Now You See Me 2‘s opening is also considered to be on the healthier side for a sequel this year, off just -22% from Now You See Me‘s $29.4M. Combined with overseas, NYSM2 opened to $45.8M. CinemaScore projects a final domestic B.O. between $63M-$88M, which would be 25% to 46% below the first edition’s $117.7M domestic B.O. Saturday held quite well for NYSM2 with $8.2M, down just 2%.

This next weekend we have 3 lower budget flicks (The Shallows, Swiss Army Man and The Neon Demon) opening opposite the mid-budget Free State of Jones and the uber budget Independence Day: Resurgence. I can't even begin to guess what anything will gross. I've seen a ton of TV ads for Shallows and Neon Demon lately, and Swiss Army Man has a strong online campaign.

My guess is ID4R will pull around $50m, not even a mild guess for anything else.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread

A big summer science fiction blockbuster opened this weekend and a big summer action buddy comedy opened last weekend and as far as this forum goes, crickets are chirping. Geez, great start to the summer season in the DVD Talk Movie forum.

This summer is pretty much the worst in recent memory for movies I want to see. I think Civil War is the only thing that stood out that I was excited for.

I'm surprised they didn't release TMNT in August as it did not do well at all. (Not that it was unexpected)

Maybe I'm crazy, but it seems to me making the box office threads sticky guarantees LESS discussion in them than it did when we had weekly box office threads....

Other than Civil War and Dory, pretty much every other sequel this year so far has underwhelmed, hasn't it?
