Weekend Estimates:
My Little Pony has outgrossed a bunch of higher profile movies this year, that amuses me a little, but not bad for a "Same Day As Theaters" VOD release.

Pretty amazing for Daddy's Home 2. Critics hated it but according to Cinemascore, audiences liked it (A- grade).

That's a really good result for Orient Express too. Usually adult-oriented movies with middling reviews get similar B.O., but I guess the all-star cast and Agatha Christie association got butts in the seats. My matinee screening was sold out today.

Justice League has rounded down to $93.3m estimate for the weekend after a $38.4m Friday (including $13m Thursday).
Wonder has rounded up to $27.4m estimate for the weekend (initial estimates were under $14m).
I like to round to the closest weird number that has nothing to do with anything apparently.
The fan response to JL makes me think it will still cross $100m by a decent margin this weekend.
Lady Bird has quietly climbed to #8 with $2.4m on 238 screens.

So JL will be a bonafide critical and box office failure. No way they can make back the amount of cash they’ve dumped into this thing. Hopefully they’ll halt all DC projects and fire everyone making the decisions on the DCU slate and reboot it correctly and not have WB execs calling the shots on these movies.

Critical for sure, box office is just most likely at this point. It has a little under a month to pull in whatever it can.

I will say that Wonder will be a box office hit. We are backlogged with that book at the library -- all the youngsters have been wanting to read it. I guess it's about a kid with a disfigurement? Don't know why WB would release it to compete with its own film. I they trying to pad the losses from JL?

It's crazy to me that Justice League, what should be DC's "Avengers" in hype and excitement, may not crack $100 million in it's opening weekend. I would have at least thought the critical and public success of Wonder Woman would have helped give it a bigger push, especially since the critically ravaged Suicide Squad and Batman V Superman still had big openings from fans.

Maybe now's the time to reissue this one:

Sunday AM writethru: Refresh for updates No great heroic change for Justice League’s prospects this weekend as Warner Bros./DC is reporting its superhero ensemble movie at $96M this morning after a $38.8M Friday (including solid $13M Thursday) and a Saturday of $33M, -15%. The expectation is that Justice League declines 27% today for $24.1M, still an upset for what was expected to be a high point for the DC superhero universe, especially when you consider that tracking had this movie at $110M-$120M projection. Overseas for Justice League posted $185.5M putting the global opening $281.5M. Eleven percent of Justice League‘s B.O. came from 400 Imax locations or $10.3M. That’s the fifth best domestic debut for the large format exhibitor.

And to think, I got chided for suggesting this would limp across $100m this weekend. It didn't even meet the lowest of expectations.

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
According to the standard equation of budget/gross/profit used for these things, JUSTICE LEAGUE will have to hit $625 million just to break even, although I suspect that old formula (two-and-a-half times a film's budget) is outdated, given the huge global marketing costs today. Three times its budget seems more likely, although that may be offset by a reduction in print costs since it now goes out digitally.
Still, my guess for break-even would be $750 million.

It will get a boost with a long holiday weekend next week, but many reports are saying it's going to have to have serious legs to get where WB expected. I just don't see that happening when December rolls around and Star Wars mania hits.

Here's a quote from the NY Times' report on JL's boxoffice take this weekend:
In what universe are those four considered "some of the world's most popular stars"? I don't even know who Jason Momoa IS!
Here's a quote from the NY Times' report on JL's boxoffice take this weekend:
“Justice League” was supposed to be the ultimate box office juggernaut.
The movie features a murderer’s row of superheroes: Wonder Woman, Batman, Cyborg, the Flash, Superman, Aquaman. Some of the world’s most popular stars — Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Jason Momoa, Amy Adams — fill out the cast. Joss Whedon, the writer-director behind “The Avengers,” one of the biggest ticket sellers of all time, helped write the screenplay.

Hell, I'm even disputing Ben Affleck's status in that line.
