Man, I was hoping that we might really get another funny Bill Murray film someday, but the commercials for Rock the Kasbah were SO awful, unfunny and basically unwatchable, that this BO result isn't much of a surprise.
BTW : There was a movie called Oogieloves In The BIG Balloon Adventure that opened on over 2000 screens?

Re: The Official Box Office Discussion Thread
Who in their right minds, other than the staff members of CNBC and The Huffington Post, would want to see a movie called OUR BRAND IS CRISIS?
P.S. And apparently, they're the only ones who went to see it. What a comedown for Sandra Bullock after GRAVITY and THE HEAT. I guess she and Clooney got overconfident after GRAVITY and figured they could make one for themselves rather than the audience. (Clooney's a producer of OUR BRAND IS CRISIS.) Which is fine as long as you don't release it in theaters.

Gaspar Noé's Love opened on 2 screens and grossed $15k/screen for a $30k total this weekend. I just don't think I'd want to watch 3D porn in a busy theater

The whole space genre has been popular the last few years, even when you discount the big franchises like Star Trek, Alien or Guardians of the Galaxy (Marvel). Gravity made $274m domestically / $723m WW, Interstellar did $188m domestically / $675m WW, and The Martian is about to pass that domestically (Currently $182m), though it has a way to go worldwide (made $428m so far).
Bodes well for some good sci-fi projects moving forward.

Interstellar opening: $47.5m -> $188m domestic
Prometheus opening: $51m -> $126m domestic
The Martian opening: $54.3m -> en route $200m+ domestic
Gravity opening: $55.8m -> $274.1m domestic
I mean, it isn't a fair example since Prometheus is the only R rated one... but I don't think that excuses it from making $60m less considering it had a $51m opening.

Thursday night previews of Spectre drew $5.25M at 3,221 theaters last night, which gives it a giant projected range of $60M - $65M (Sony's projection) all the way to $75M - $80M (Industry projections).
Peanuts opens this weekend and is expected to make between $40M and $45M.
Critically, Spectre has a 63% approval rating on meta review site rottentomatoes.com with a 6.5 / 10.0 average score among critics. Peanuts has an 87% with a 6.9/10 average score.
And The Martian is now Ridley Scott's highest grossing domestic movie with $187.76M, unadjusted mind you.

Weekend Estimates, I ran it up to #22 so Spotlight's solid average would show up.
Opening Weekend for Craig as Bond:
Casino Royale (2006) - $40.8m
Quantum of Solace (2008) - $67.5m
Skyfall (2012) - $88.4m
Spectre - $73m
The Martian, Bridge of Spies, Hotel Translyvania 2, Goosebumps and even The Intern have shown impressive legs. Room looks like another critically acclaimed non-money maker for A24.

I'm curious how Spectre would've preformed on a different weekend. I do think the Thursday night release of Black Ops III ate into potential business as people opted to stay at home to play the game rather than venture to the movies. I know I was almost one of the individuals, but ended up catching an early evening showing last night just to get out of the house.

It's tough to say to be honest, tracking had this at $70m for the last couple weeks, and Skyfall had Bond 50th Anniversary working in it's favor, not to mention a great trailer and free advertising thanks to Adele's opening theme and Olympic skydiving stunts. It even had me anxious to see it in theaters, and I basically never see Bond flicks in theaters.

While I enjoyed Hoytema's cinematography in Spectre, I will agree with the complaints that the colors shouldn't have been as muted as they were.

Adjusted down to 70m for Spectre... probably 225-230ish domestic, 900m worldwide. Still great, but a little lower than most were hoping I think.
