As The Movie Man just said, you really can't compare those 2 movies to a sequel of a cult movie from 35 years ago.

It's really hard IMO nowadays to get people in the theaters to see really long movies. And 163 minutes limits the amount of showings they can have in 1 day/night.

I saw Blade Runner 2049 last week on opening night at 10:45pm and I got really tired after the 90 minute mark when it was close to 12:30am and nodded off a few times. I'd like to see it again, but trying to find a day with that much free time for an early afternoon show can be hard.

I don't think running time is that much of a deterrent either Any impact would be somewhat insignificant in the grand scheme of total box office take.

BR2049 is only 10 minutes longer than The Dark Knight and The Martian, about as long as Spectre, two minutes shorter than The Dark Knight Rises, and four minutes shorter than Straight Outta Compton.

The runtime argument simply doesn't hold up.

Audiences would willingly sit for a James Bond or Batman movie for that long, but not a Blade Runner sequel. I would brave a Tarantino movie that was that long because I knew I would be engaged the whole time, but not a Denis Villenueve movie, during which I'd either sleep or have to get up to go to the bathroom. (I did go to the bathroom during the Dark Knight movies, SPECTRE and PACIFIC RIM).

Audiences will sit that long for any movie they find compelling and entertaining enough to merit the runtime.

Your projection of preferences notwithstanding, whether that movie is Blade Runner 2049 is another argument altogether.

Really poor showing for Professor Marston. I'm sure Annapurna was hoping to ride the coattail of Wonder Woman, but this arthouse film should never have gotten a wide theatrical release like that. Meanwhile, Happy Death Day surprises (at least it surprised me) and It continues to go strong.

I’m guessing Jigsaw will max out at around $40M.

For a franchise that’s been dead for 7 years, that’s not a bad take and I see it was made relatively cheap at $10M.

I would guess $30M. Movies like this drop like a rock after their first weekend. I would gauge Jigsaw's BO as just okay, neither a true hit nor a bomb. It'll turn a small profit for Lionsgate, but it's not a great result for a franchise revival.

Probably will, though didn't do too bad on Monday, only dropped 63.3% from Sunday (third lowest in the top 10). But with Thor opening this weekend, I'm predicting at least 75%.

As of Tuesday night, IT was 1 million away from being crowned the #1 worldwide grossing horror film. That is unadjusted.

If we are talking adjusted for inflation, the following 'horror' films are still ahead of it. Note that supernatural and comedy horror are included as a part of the genre.

Jaws, The Exorcist, The Sixth Sense, Young Frankenstein, Gremlins and Psycho.

Jaws is pretty much untouchable at over 1 billion!

The movie has definitely turned profitable. Only question is whether that's enough for Lionsgate to do another movie.
