Reform School Girls (1986) — As these exploitation movies go, it's not half bad and some okay performances (along with beautiful young women, of course). It's nothing overly special but has its moments of trashy entertainment. ***/*****

Scanners III: The Takeover (1991)

Although I didn't enjoy this film as much as Scanners II: The New Order (1991), I did appreciate how insanely goofy this sequel was.

Sometimes you just have to scan a pigeon

Turning Red (2022)

Though the film is a bit derivative, it's beautifully animated and filled with fantastic messages & themes.

Absolutely loved the final act.

Blood On Her Name (2019)

Southern Neo-Noir anchored by a fantastic performance from Bethany Anne Lind.

Loses a bit of its steam after the half-way point but the oppressively dark trek there was consistently engaging.

The Sword and the Sorcerer (1982) — Somewhat charming fantasy-adventure film that features some respectable special effects and the set designs were pretty good. Acting was so-so however the lead didn't have a whole lot of charisma and the fight scenes were fine but a few scenes were too dimly lit. Should be said, these kinds of movies (including Conan the Barbarian) aren't really my thing but at least this kept my attention. ***/*****

Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)

It's better than Texas Chainsaw (2013) & Leatherface (2017) but that really isn't saying much, especially when better equates to more gore and a shorter run-time.

Almost everything about this film is a garbled mess, including its awful attempt at Social Commentary.

Umma (2022), which is Korean for Mother

A very un-scary and low budget horror movie that attempts to borrow from Korean folklore. I thought Sandra Oh was decent, but the movie itself was kind of flat and not even remotely scary. It's about 75 minutes before credits.

I don't recommend this for hardcore horror fans. You'll be very disappointed or bored. There's barely any suspense and no violence. It's mainly attempts at being creepy.

Candyman: Farewell To The Flesh (1995)

While it doesn't hit the highs of the first film, its far from unwatchable.

FX work is solid and set pieces are interesting, especially a few that litter the finale.

Scream (2022)

While it very well may be the strongest of the sequels, I expected a lot more from Bettinelli-Olpin/Gillett/Busick, as they were the minds behind one of my favorite Horror films of 2019, Ready or Not.

Is fair to say a film is derivative, if its characters are aware of it in the script?

Even with my qualms about the film, I enjoyed David Arquette, Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox in their roles in addition to the kills being a bit meaner in this sequel.

Turning Red - Pixar movie on Disney+, cute but just okay

Old - M. Night Shyamalan's latest thriller. I thought this was pretty good. Interesting and creepy scifi/horror concept and it was well-executed.

Anyway, I've seen this one a few times over the years, include IIRC sneak preview a couple weeks before it opened in theaters, and enjoyed it. Ryan Phillipe plays scumbag pretty well. If this were made today, Mile Teller could fill that role.

LOL

If it was made today it would probably be a TV series and not a feature film.

There is a TV series, originally slated for CBS before they dropped it due to COVID. Now set for Netflix it seems.

I own this

It lost a little steam and excitement when the Jeremy Piven character died even though he was a total douchebag.

Dennis Leary in one of his better roles

I remember being excited at the time about the rap combining metal soundtrack.

I wish it was called the 669 and Diane Krueger was sucking off Penelope Cruz and Chastain was playing with herself watching them and it would have been a more exciting movie.

Showtime

What happened to Sarah Polley?

She went MIA in the 2010's and nowhere to be seen.

I doubt they could make a movie like this and wonder how it did get made back then with a old dude dating girls that are not 21 yet.

Schizoid (1980) — Satisfying and somewhat effective mystery-thriller. It's another 1980s-era movie that's not entirely special but kept my attention throughout. Also fun to see Christopher Lloyd in a film early in his career (though had been on Taxi for a couple years before this release). ***¼/*****

X-Ray (aka Hospital Massacre) (1981)
— Decent kills. Convoluted plot. Gorgeous Lead. **¼/*****
