Doesn't look like they're doing anything different with this one, just presenting the same old story with a larger time frame between installments.

Really tempted to look at that spoiler but trying to stay strong. I might look like ravens T.O. pic if I do.

In all fairness, mdc3000 said it was missing a few details. So perhaps there's an accomplice of which we don't know. Either way, if
Spoiler:
the cousin in question is Emma Robert's character
that's pretty cool cos it screws with the whole
Spoiler:
"passing the torch"
business everyone was expecting.

Well that sucks hard. This is the most implausible of all the killers so far in the series. However, I don't believe that this person will be dancing alone.

This is currently sitting at 61% fresh on rotten tomatoes, with 41 reviews in so far. It will be interesting to see if the percentage goes up or down as more reviews trickle in.

Just finished my Scream marathon. Started on Tuesday and watched one each night. I really wish I hadn't watched part 3 again. I don't have high expectations for 4, but I'm still damn excited.

re: Scream 4 (Craven, 2011) - script by Williamson

Caught this tonight at an advance screening, I'd give it a 3 / 5..and place it higher then Scream 3, but lower then the first and second..

That being said, IMO, Scream 4 is quite different. At times it's almost self aware and really kind of silly. The whole back bone of the film is that it's mocking the whole remake trend. (The killer is "remaking" the events of the first movie). Its not great, but as long as you're not expecting a traditional horror movie..its really entertaining..and theres some great lines and twists that made the audience cheer.

Scream 4 only works because you're not supposed to take it 100% seriously, but its not completely over the top. I won't spoil anything, but the last 15 minutes or so I NEVER saw coming and were great.. and to it's credit, I can't see where they'd take this for a fifth installment. This would be a great ending to cap off the series and make up for the shit fest known as Scream 3.

I'd recommend it, but only if you're a fan of the series (or even just the original, which is the only film in the franchise this seems to makes reference to)

In summary...

PROS:

-Opening
-Ending
-The "cops in movies" dialog
-90s nostalgia
-ALLOT of fun.

CONS:
-Won't scare you..at all.
-At times, how meta it is can be pretty annoying

As a horror film, it falls flat on it's face. It's kind of sad to see Wes Craven use the same boring scare tactics that these films characters make fun of. I guess that's the joke?

It seemed like there was more death scenes in this one then any other Scream. That's probably why I felt the film was just going from murder to murder. It probably would have helped to slow it down a bit, maybe throw in some more story rather then just going through the motions.

Also, teens are being killed left and right (again). It's the 15th year anniversary of the brutal murders that made your little town famous. Might I ask, where the hell are all the parents?

re: Scream 4 (Craven, 2011) - script by Williamson

I decided to marathon the first three movies this evening. God, I loved this series so much when I was a kid. I saw Scream 2 opening weekend with a packed house. I remember some surly usherette tried to kick me out of the theater for being underage while my dad was out getting popcorn. I was prepared to throw down with the broad, as no one was going to keep me from seeing that movie!

I hadn't revisted the series in over a decade and really had fun watching them all again. I'm surprised at how '90s the first two feel. All the computers and cellphones on display are now total dinosaurs! I never hated the third one and my opinion didn't really change this time around (Courtney Cox had really bad hair in that one!). It was a step down in quality, but still pretty entertaining. I like how the killer's motives in each film kept relating back to
Spoiler:
Maureen Prescott -- sins of the mother returning to bite Sidney in the ass.
I don't know if that tradition hold's true for part four, but considering I clicked on that ill-gotten spoiler (like Gizmo, I assumed it would be a vauge assumption until someone confirmed it in the next post), I'm betting it will hold true to some degree. Actually, I'm more eager to see it now. I really enjoy the characters of Sidney, Dewey and Gale and am just looking forward to seeing them reunite. I'm also hoping they used the song "Red Right Hand" somewhere in the movie... it wouldn't feel complete without it.

And now you ruined it for people who accidently read the spoiler and was hoping it wasn't real.

Thanks

That spoiler is missing allot. IMO, it won't ruin your enjoyment of the ending, or the film as a whole.

The spoiler was marked as such and is indeed somewhat disappointing. However, I'm still looking forward to seeing this either tonight or tomorrow

I agree. I had read the spoiler prior to watching the movie and it didn't really do any harm.

I'll take the credit on that one (my post directly below the spoiler confirmed it as real, since I saw the movie at the end of March) but no one ACCIDENTALLY can CLICK on a spoiler - even if you think it's probably bullshit, it's still a choice to click.

Caught an early showing of this today. I liked it quite a bit. I've been a fan of the entire trilogy and this one's right on par with the others IMO. It was definitely bloodier than I was expecting it to be and quite a bit moreso than the others, if I recall correctly. The only negative for me was that it dragged a bit between the opening and the next kill.

I didn't do it by accident, but reading it as someone's speculation [I'll be upset about the killer if] seemed like it would be safe. A potential spoiler, maybe -- but they clearly weren't certain it was true. If I'd scrolled down a bit a saw your confirmation just under it, I wouldn't have clicked on it. Of course, it's still my own fault. Luckily, it didn't really matter in the end.

Anyway, just got back from a matinee -- really dug it. I might need to take some time to form a final opinion, but right now I'd place it right on par with the second one. Maybe even better. From all the commercials, I was dreading that this movie would be nothing but vapid CW actresses I'd never heard of getting stalked for 90 minutes while our returning heroes took a back seat. Thankfully, I was proved wrong. This is a well and true sequel that is full of callbacks to the previous films. Fans of the series (or just the first one) should enjoy it.
Spoiler:
Most of those commercial girls were all used effectively in the pre-title sequence. I was rolling my eyes during the first few minutes with the 90210 chick. Then I thought, "This is too lame an opening. It must be from one of the Stab sequels". So pleased I was right.

I was also pretty satisfied with the final reveal. Don't get me wrong, the killer's motives aren't that inspired. In fact, I'm sure the exact same idea crossed my mind when that particular character was announced in the casting sides. I'd have been really pissed if that twat's plan was successful, but I felt the whole "alternate ending" finale was a pretty cool payoff. I'm sure some may feel otherwise. The audience I saw it with (about 30 people) were all into it.

BTW, I'm guessing the script tinkering had a lot to do with cutting down character development. I mean, the role of Jill's mother is such a nothing part -- it's no wonder Lauren Graham quit the movie after the "script changes". I'm also surprised that an actress of Mary McDonnell's caliber was willing to step in. It was a waste of her talent. As for Lake Bell, I don't know what her issue was. Deputy Judy (lemon squares ) was a pretty fun addition and I'm glad Marley Shelton ended up with the part instead. Hayden P. was decent and I feel she got more than enough screen time. I heard she had complained about her character being dumbed down, but I thought Kirby was a more developed character than Tatum in the original. She wasn't the star of the movie, after all.

Whether Kevin Williamson was satisfied with the final product or not, I still found this movie to be better than the majority of his post-Scream output.
Oh, and no "Red Right Hand" this time.

re: Scream 4 (Craven, 2011) - script by Williamson

I just saw this, and sad to say I found the movie to be really tedious. A lot of that is my fault because I went into this movie expecting a horror film. I don't know why, because Scream never really has been about being scary (save for the first 10 minutes of the first film), but have instead been thrillers with good chunk of slashing thrown in for good measure.

The problem I had with Scream 4 was it really was just more of the same. The great thing about the original movies (mainly the first) was that it was commenting on the horror movies that came before it. I thought this one was going to do the same with the movies that came out since Scream -- focusing on the horror of the 2000s. The movie sort of touches the horror of the last 10 years, but never as smartly as the first movie did.

Also, maybe I'm just getting old, but I hated ALL of these kids. Really, the only likable teen character in the movie was Kirby. And speaking of the characters, they all do a lot of really dumb stuff. I know you have to suspend your disbelief when watching these movies, but I felt like every character made a ridiculous decision that resulted in their demise. It's hard to root for dumb characters to live, and Ghostface isn't really the kind of slasher that I enjoy seeing do his thing since the kills aren't creative. It's just stab stab stab.

I'm glad other people are digging this. It just wasn't for me.

Spoiler:
lets just say that the publicist getting killed got a round of applause and had everyone yelling at the screen for being so stupid

God, tell me about it!

Also, and I know this is a silly complaint, but it's so hard to take Ghostface serious because it's always just a Scooby Do villain under that mask. In the first movie it was easier to take, because I didn't know what was going on, but now I can't help but do that thing of breaking down the plausibility of the kills. They treat GF just like Mike Myers or Jason, when that character isn't supernatural or a ninja. Again, I know -- nitpicky. It never bothers me during the movie. Only after I think about what's what after reveals are revealed.
