Campbell Drops Out Of Scream Sequel
24 June 2009 6:36 PM, PDT
Scream creator Kevin Williamson has been forced to re-write his screenplay for a fourth Scream movie, after the franchise's star Neve Campbell refused to reprise her role.
Director Wes Craven recently revealed Courteney Cox and her husband David Arquette were returning for a fourth instalment of the movie series, to shoot a screenplay written by Williamson.
The filmmakers hoped Campbell would reprise her role as Sidney Prescott for a fourth time - but the actress has turned down the offer.
Now Williamson has to go back to the drawing board.
He tells NYPost.com's PopWrap blog, "I've had numerous conversations with Neve. She's a friend. Nicest girl on the planet. It just ain't workin' out and it sucks for me. It was no cameo. I'd never play Sid out that way. And I ain't got no Sid-less scenario. So, I don't know yet what to do."

Didn't we already have that news in another thread because it was rumored he was having Sidney be the killer and Neve wouldn't do it? That sure would throw a wrench in a writer's gears.

Yeah good move, Neve Cambell. Seriously, she has so much else going on. She's a household name at this point and reprising the role that made her famous is just wayyyy too beneath her.

The only reason to make part 4 would be to make-up for part 3. And part 2. Hell, the entire series.
Alright, the first one was decent, but it still gave birth to the bland, polished "horror" films with CW (formerly WB) characters we continue to see today that have made the transormation into PG-13 tween films.

If the idea was for her (Sidney) to be the killer than I'm kind of glad she turned it down. I mean, I'm just not sure I'd be okay with that. It kind of makes rooting for her in the first three films pointless and it would make the original trilogy less fun. I want a happy ending for Sidney.
But if that's not what he wrote why in the world would she say no? I want a Scream 4. I just don't know what it would even be about, and it just wouldn't be the same without Neve Campbell. Hopefully Kevin Williamson can think something up.

Sidney Prescott's story isn't over until she goes insane and dons the masked costume.

'Scream 4' to shoot this spring
Wes Craven to direct original thesps in horror sequel
By DAVE MCNARY
Dimension Films has greenlit "Scream 4" to shoot this spring with a release date of April 15, 2011 -- more than a decade after the release of "Scream 3."
Wes Craven will direct and Neve Campbell, David Arquette and Courteney Cox Arquette will reprise their roles along with a group of younger thesps.
Dimension said its 2011 slate focuses on continuing its most successful franchises. The original "Scream" grossed more than $170 million worldwide in 1996; "Scream 2" also took in more than $170 million in 1997 and "Scream 3" topped $160 million after it was released in 2000.
Craven helmed all three pics, which starred Campbell, Arquette and Cox Arquette.
" 'Scream' has been such an integral part of Dimension's history, and I look forward to continuing the franchise," said Dimension Films chief Bob Weinstein, who is also co-chairman of the Weinstein Co.
Dimension is set to open "Piranha 3D" on Aug. 27.
