Catwoman screenwriter John Rogers is writing Transformers, the DreamWorks/Paramount live-action tentpole based on the popular Hasbro toys, reports Variety.
Steven Spielberg is executive producing the film that is slated for a Summer 2006 release and will likely be a franchise property. Tom DeSanto, who executive produced the two "X-Men" films, wrote the story that Rogers will adapt.
Rogers is also working on Rush Hour 3 for director Brett Ratner at New Line, due out next year. At DreamWorks, he's producing Fatal Frame, based on the Japanese video game.

Catwoman screenwriter? At least someone with a little respect for this kind of stuff wrote the story he has to adapt.
The scenario with Prime saying: "Fuck you Megatron," before he blows his head off would make a great sound byte for a toy!

This is from IGN. They posted it about a week ago
In a posting on the message board of his official site, producer Don Murphy addressed several rumors making the rounds about the live-action feature film version of The Transformers in-development at DreamWorks.
"There are NO voice actors yet. There may be soon. I will personally make sure that our director considers (Frank Welker) and the gang. I think celebrity voices for a film like this is moronic," Murphy wrote. As for rumors that there will be no movie tie-in toys from Hasbro, Murphy advises rumor-mongers to "dream on. That's the very reason they [Hasbro] WANT a film from Steven Spielberg."
While emphasizing that "NOTHING is decided" yet, Murphy nevertheless says his experience in Hollywood leads him to belive that "1- I do not see mass shifting happening. 2- I do not see a giant robot turning into a cassette player. 3- Hasbro will not have a toy that turns into a pistol. 4- I just saw the robots in Sky Captain at Comic-Con – we want ours to be the opposite of those. Personalities!"
Murphy adds that he and fellow Transformers producer Tom DeSanto "are NOT doing anything to do with Beasts and Dinos and (expletive). ... The next few weeks will have us, ala X-Men, decide on 7 core members of each team. DeSanto will be there to make sure we stay true."
Murphy encourages Transformers to provide their input on the movie by posting on his message board. The Transformers is slated for a 2006 release.
The most encouraging part of this news is that the original voice actors will do the voices, so Optimus would be Optimus, Megatron would be Megatron, etc. He is against celebrity voices. I wonder if that means that Judd Nelson won't reprise his role as Rodimus Prime.
The bad news about this is the part about not having a toy that turns into a gun. I don't have a huge problem with Megatron turning into something else, but it wouldn't be a Transformers movie if it didn't have Megatron.
I thought that it was funny that he so quickly dismissed Shockwave.
I think that the 7 per team thing will work out very well, but some people will be disappointed that some of their favorites are missing.

Hey, when Transformers debuted on TV it took them several seasons to introduce new members of each side. Red Alert, Grapple, and Omega Supreme never appeared until season two, but it was inferred that they crash landed on earth with the rest of the Autobots.

Actually that would be pretty sweet if he came back as Hot Rod or Rodimus.

I think the comment on Soundwave was more along the lines of how silly it would be because of the size differential. Still, Soundwave is one of the more recognizable Decepticons, so it would be dissapointing to not have him included in some form or another.

If they wanted, they could set the movie in the 80s and explain away the tape player and out of date cars dilemma. Maybe they can get Michael Bay to direct.

If they update, maybe soundwave could be more along the lines of a media software and rumble, ravage, and lazerbeak would just be the names of viruses he uses to infect systems of the earth and Autobot spaceships, Skynet style!
Or maybe Rumble could be a vibrator.

Dr. DVD, you may be onto something...
Instead of being rebuilt by the ship's computer, Soundwave's battered body was discarded and his personality saved. Soundwave is now a sentient program that gets downloaded onto your computer as free Media software, enabling him to control computer systems. Ravage now transforms into a monitor & speakers, and Laserbeak, a CPU.
While it's a loose tie-in to the name "Soundwave", it would get really suit the idea of "robots in disguise" - imagine how much the audience would jump if a guy sat down at a computer, only for the monitor to suddenly transform into a shrieking mechanical cat.
Also, the idea of Soundwave being a compter virus than people unwillingly download is certainly applicable to everyday computer life...

All I ask is that they keep the recognizable robot modes for both sides.
Damn shame that there's no love for the Dinobots.

Actually, Megatron as a cell phone would probably be more appropriate than one would think. Mayn cell phone users are seen as bad in public, so why not capitalize on that? In fact, this could be used as a plot device. The Decepticons make allies of corrupt business men and become their phones, computers, and personal jets when they're not menacing giants.

I have a feeling that someone is "really" going to fuck this up.
Thankfully, the original movie is on dvd with that kickass 80's soundtrack.

I really wish Rhino would re-release it with a corrected 5.1 track and/or the original 2.0 stereo mix.

Like others have said, as long as they stick to the original story I'll be happy. And of course, they gotta get some of the original voices back if they can. I heard the guy that was Starscream is dead though
Dunno if that was mentioned before, I don't feel like reading all the old posts
