I will not be able to see this and not think about Optimus Prime and his prostate cancer thanks to Robot Chicken.

Moriarty at AICN is reporting that the directing gig for this movie is down to Roland Emmerich and Michael Bay. He's indicating that the favorite seems to be Michael Bay. Don't know if this is an April's Fools joke since it was published on April 1st and this is AICN, after all.

AICN EXCLUSIVE! Sing Along! ‘TRANSFORMERS! A Film By Mi-chael Baaaaay!!’
Hi, everyone. "Moriarty" here with some Rumblings From The Lab...
A little birdie at Dreamworks gave me a call today and just sang and sang and sang. Now, at first, I decided to be skeptical of anything the birdie said because of the date. April 1st, I just let the phone ring most times. But this is someone I’ve known for a while, someone who most assuredly works where they say they work, someone who has been listening in on some recent meetings in which it appears Dreamworks has narrowed the list of potential directors for TRANSFORMERS down to two names, both familiar to fanboys worldwide.
Roland Emmerich is evidently eager to do the film, but I hear he’s about to get shut out in favor of Michael Bay. If I was a betting man, I’d put my money on Bay. Word is that Dreamworks is mighty happy with THE ISLAND, and they want to reward Bay by handing over a franchise they see as a major priority at the studio. Tom DeSanto and Don Murphy are both attached to produce the film, and they’re currently supervising a rewrite of the John Rogers script by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who wrote THE ISLAND and who are best known for their work on ALIAS.
So go ahead... be skeptical. I would expect nothing less on this calendar date. But when they finish up with all the paperwork and the smoke clears, I’m sure it’ll be one of these two guys, and I’m leaning towards Bay as the winner. Let’s see what happens next week.

Does anybody else here agree with me that the ONLY people that could possibly get this movie right is PIXAR? I think it would be a milestone for the company to finally produce a Live Action/CG movie.
Seeing the depth and care they put into their projects tells me that they would be the ONLY ones to even care about the story AND the characters.
I think in the hands of just about anyone else it will just be a special effects extravaganza with no real story or character development.
Ten bucks says that a first time director gets the spot, backed by big name producers. And then crap ensues.

Cinescape just posted today that Speilberg is courting Michael Bay, so it must not have been an April Fools gag.
If there was any movie tailor made for Bay I think this one would be it. Think of all his quick cuts he would pull off of the transformers changing. Pixar would be cool, but a very high improbability. I think Bay is a good second choice. I know a lot here detest him, but I think he could pull this movie off.

Michael Bay may direct 'Transformers'
Wednesday, April 6, 2005 Posted: 10:00 AM EDT (1400 GMT)
LOS ANGELES, California (Hollywood Reporter) -- Michael Bay is in talks to direct the DreamWorks/Paramount live-action adaptation of "The Transformers," Hasbro's popular 1980s toy line of giant robots that morph into cars, trucks, planes, ships and other technological creations.
The move would reteam the director with DreamWorks, which is handling domestic distribution on the movie. Bay is helming DreamWorks' upcoming summer release "The Island," a co-production with Warner Bros. Pictures.
Bay also would reunite with writers Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci, who, under their two-year, first-look deal with DreamWorks, rewrote "Island" and wrote "Transformers."
The Transformers are divided into two groups of robots, one led by Optimus Prime, which believes in tolerance and the sanctity of life, the other by Megatron, which espouses survival of the fittest and the extermination of biological life.
A November 17, 2006, release date has been set. Bay's credits include the two "Bad Boys" movies, "Pearl Harbor," "Armageddon" and "The Rock."

With Bay in charge, I think we might get exactly the kind of balls-to-the-wall Transformers movie we'd like. Big, full of action. Effects that don't suck.
I'd worry more about his actual directing of actors, but here, he's directing robots. I'd EXPECT them to be stiff...

I'm sure Bay would deliver on the action front and rumour has it they'd use the remaining 80's cast to do the voices so acting will be good where it counts.
My only worry is the script. What else have these guys written other than The Island? Are these the guys that work on Alias?

"Megatron must be stopped, no matter the cost" or
"M-m-m-Megatron?" "Here's a hint..." *wur wer er werm* BAM!!!
I'll be partying like it's 1986 where I yelped in a movie theater along with a generation of fanboys who would be hooked for life.

If you were like a lot of fanboys at the time, you were most likely shocked to see
Spoiler:
Bay in charge might be a good thing for a movie like this; you know darn well he will keep one of the autmobiles as a souvinier! I notice they want to release the movie on November 17th of 2006, just in time to have to have the toys out in time for Christmas!
We also need the lines : "One shall stand, one shall fall"
"Why throw away your life so recklessly?"
"That's a question you should ask yourself Megatron!"
Shame the man who did Megatron's voice is dead, he could make that evil voice like no other. As long as Prime's is still intact, it should be great!

What? Frank Welker isn't dead. Since when?
EDIT: See, you guys are wrong. http://imdb.com/name/nm0919798/ Frank Welker, the voice of Megatron, Soundwave and a boatload of other Transformers is most certainly not dead.
I think you guys are confusing him for Chris Latta (Starscream and Cobra Commander) who is, sadly, dead.

Somewhat off-topic: Since Dreamwave closed shop, anyone know where I can get a good deal on their Transformers G1 comics? I found them hard to come by here in Puerto Rico.

Frank Welker is still alive? Cool! Maybe the one celebrity voice could be Steve Buscemi as StarScream.

I do a pretty good Jazz and Starscream. I'm by no means Christopher Latta (Cobra Commander: best cartoon character of all time), nor am I Scatman Cruthers, but I'm not bad. Tell them to call me. We'll do lunch.
